SCREENING TODAY : Jana Aranaya Jana Aranya is the last of Satyajit Ray's Calcutta trilogy. The earlier being Pratidwandi and Seemabaddha. It begins with a scene in the examination hall. The journey of a youngster who comes out of this broken education system that does not work for students and teachers alike is sensitively portrayed by Ray. He finds himself floundering in the dehumanizing world of unemployment, competition where lakhs of others are struggling too. The circumstances he is thrown into and the hopelessness of people around him are the consequences of the debilitating economic conditions post Bengal famine, Indo - Pak war, peasant uprising of naxalbari, the emergency in the 70s. The deplorable conditions pave way for corruption, chicanery, immorality, and the emergence of middlemen in the local market. The film dissects the marketing sphere of the commodity production and the role of middlemen in it. 18th Aug, 7pm, Lamakaan, Banjara hills. The screening will be followed by a discussion. A lot of movies in Indian cinema have had strong female characters but they seem to falter when it comes to representing them as empowered, employed women. They often struggle to find jobs, or leave their careers and aspirations because of a man in their life. They are dancers, courtesans, or aspiring career women, but at the drop of a hat (i.e., by falling in love, running away from a man, or getting married), they leave their aspirations to appease a male figure in their life. These films, on the other hand, depict women who are in control of their careers, despite facing hurdles, and take charge of their professional lives.
