VALE DAVID TILEY 1950-2024 David Tiley began his long association with the Australian screen industry as an educational script writer with the South Australian Film Corporation in 1973. This led to a career in educational programs, documentary, script editing, and screen funding, before his recruitment as the editor of ScreenHub in 2005. Throughout his tenure as editor, and subsequent position as content lead, he wrote extensively on changing trends, policy issues, and market developments in a distinct style of sharp, fast, and playful investigative journalism. In 2022, he became the first journalist recognised with the Australian International Documentary Conference’s Stanley Hawes Award for outstanding contribution to the documentary and factual sector. He also directed the 1989 film'Murphy Was An Optimist' Pictured here are stills from the AFIRC. Eric D. Seals | Director, DP Eric D. Seals is a seasoned film director and cinematographer with 10+ years of experience creating and managing feature films, television, and digital content series. He holds a Bachelor's degree from Murray State University with concentrations in Electronic Media and Business Administration. Eric started his career at ESPN, working as a video editor on shows such as Sportscenter, Mike and Mike, and First Take. In 2020, he was selected as a Diverse Voices in Documentaries Fellow with Kartemquin Films, and in 2021, he was selected as a Netflix Directing and Producing Fellow. Eric enjoys giving back to the film community by facilitating workshops and has recently become an Adjunct Professor at Depaul University, teaching a course in Sports Documentary Production. �He is the founder and creative director of Digifé, a full-service film production company that focuses on documentaries and social impact stories. A #doublefeature from last week. I’d been thinking about the film critic #rogerebert for some reason, so I watched Steve James’s (Hoop Dreams) documentary Life Itself which is based on Ebert’s memoir of the same name. It’s informative about the critic’s life but what is really fascinating and moving is that Ebert and his wife Chaz allowed so much access during the last months of his life while he was fighting cancer. The man’s lower jaw is missing and yet he mostly maintains a positive outlook on life. It’s inspiring. Because he is mentioned in the film and because he credits Ebert’s praise of his debut #documentary for launching his career, I decided to watch Errol Morris’ Gates of Heaven. I’ve seen several documentaries by Morris before but never this one which is about people involved in the #petcemetery business. Morris has an idiosyncratic style and this one is no exception. Under the surface it is really about mortality in general, and relationships, and success and failure. I enjoyed it but its quirkiness and oddball interviewees may not appeal to everyone. Both these were viewed on @kanopy so thanks to @sfpubliclibrary for providing the service to your patrons. I thought I would do a few posts to introduce you to the team behind @forkedthefilm and it seemed fitting to start with our amazing producer @ldrcreativellc LISA DONMALL-REEVE migrated to film from a successful and extensive career in theatre, where she spent over twenty years as a performer playing many leading roles in London’s West End and internationally. As a creative, she has assisted some of the world’s finest choreographers on numerous projects and helped shape the next generation of dancers as an educator in both the U.S. and U.K. Lisa launched LDR Creative LLC in 2016 with the objective to build creative teams that inspire, and to produce product that makes a difference. Her first short film, Early Mourning, was screened at over 20 film festivals, winning 5 awards including the Audience Award at the Soho International Film Festival 2017 in NYC. The follow-up short, Free, is distributed on both Shorts TV and Amazon Prime, and several more shorts are currently screening on film festival circuits. Lisa’s first feature length documentary, ‘Uprooted - The Journey of Jazz Dance’ enjoyed a world premiere at the Lincoln Centres Dance on Camera Film Festival in NYC, winning the Best of Fest Feature Award in 2020 and is continuing to take the festival circuit by storm winning sixteen further awards including Best Musical Documentary at The Rhode Island International Film Festival and was nominated for Best Documentary during its International Premiere at Raindance Film Festival. 🇸🇾💬 #AlHallaq: New #Law Constitutes A Basic Building For #National #Media Sector #SyrianNews & On Apr 24, 2024 #MinisterOfInformation #BoutrosAlHallaq confirmed that the law creating the #MinistryOfInformation to replace the Ministry created in 1961 constitutes a starting point for developing the national media sector in general by establishing foundations for #modernization in the current media institutional structures so that they are compatible with the #AdministrativeReform project and are an effective incubator for achieving the ministry’s mission of producing media committed to the #NationalIdentity, and preserving media that maintains the educational and moral concepts of the family and society. Minister Al-Hallaq explained in a statement that the new law allows media sector institutions to be an element of diversifying national income, and a component of national economic activities. He added: At the level of the ministry’s work, this law comes to develop the work of all its directorates and introduce new tasks for them in comparison with the law issued in 1961. For example, some articles of the law included organizing the tasks of most directorates, such as the #ElectronicMedia Directorate, in order to be able to enhance national digital content on the #Arachnoid network. Al-Hallaq pointed out that the new law organized the supervision of the television drama industry and also opened cooperation and participation with the private sector for #MediaProduction, #Drama, #DocumentaryFilms, etc., stressing that this law formed the basis for the development of this important national sector.

Concerns are rapidly growing around how generative AI can create audio, video, and photo-realistic images that are indistinguishable from true historical material and complicate representations of reality. The @archivalproducersalliance (APA) has recently released guidelines to help filmmakers think through whether and how to incorporate AI into their work, and other groups are also wrestling with the implications of using AI. In this talk, Stephanie Jenkins (@slhjenkins), co-founder of the APA, and producer with Florentine Films, will discuss the value and challenges of deep-file archival research and how GAI technologies will help and challenge filmmakers in a new era of technology.
