First Trip to the Hawai'i State Library Today was my first visit to the Hawai'i State Library @hsplshigov. I finally got my very own library card! I visited the Children's book area (Garde 4-6), the Music area, and the Hawaii and Pacific Reference area. I found a series called Wolves of the Beyond (@wolves_ofthe_beyond) based in the world of the Guardians of Gahoole (@guardians_of_ga_hoole). I'm borrowing the first book, Lone Wolf. In the music section, I got to look through several books of piano sheet music: Classical, Movie Themes, Musicals, Piano Solos and more! We photocopied Canon in D (aka Pachelbel's Canon) by Johann Pachelbel for me to start taking a look at it. We also found a book related to our latest Pili Ka Mo'o Module, Kapa. We have been learning about kapa from Kumu Dalani (@kapahawaii) at @papahanakuaola. This book is about natural dyes, and is called "Dyes of Hawai'i: Na Ho'olu'u o Hawai'i" (see pic 10). I loved my first time at the Hawai'i State Library. Aloha awakea, kākou! 🤙 Our hoaloha at Ka Paʻalana embarked on a fantastic huakaʻi to Papahana Kuaola, in the ‘ili of Waipao, in Heʻeia, Oʻahu. During their huakaʻi, ʻohana were split up into two groups to hehi hehi (stomp) in the loʻi, or to catch invasive iʻa in the kahawai. The Ka Paʻalana keiki, mākua, kūpuna, and kumu had fun in both rotations. They were encouraging each other to step in the loʻi and feel the lepo (dirt, earth) in between their toes. Some keiki loved the feeling of the soft and wet lepo, treating it as a big sensory pit that they could experience with their hands and feet. All of the keiki had fun in the kahawai using the nets to catch the iʻa, and all wore big minoʻaka (smiles) after playing in the water. Getting to connect with the elements as our kūpuna had, was a great experience for our Ka Paʻalana ʻohana. Many of them have not been to Papahana Kuaola before, so it was a treat! 5 months of class with the awesome families has just zipped on by as we head towards our last class next month. Even with a big lunch time rain shower everyone kept working on their fermented kapa and ohe kapala. Pili Ka Mo'o - Module 2: KAPA Day 10 - January 2024 Another productive day at Papahana Kuaola. We continued working on our set of tools for kapa under the guidance of Kumu Dalani (@kapahawaii) and Kumu Kawaikaula'au Aona-Ueoka. We received two additions to our growing set of Kua La'au (Tools from Native Wood): a kua (anvil) and a niho 'oki (shark tooth knife). Daddy sanded and oiled our kua. Mommy worked on our i'e kuku and niho 'oki. I got to start practicing stamping or printing (kapala). Pili Ka Mo'o - Module 2 Day 7 - October 2023 Today was the first day of Module 2, KAPA! We also welcomed Cohort 2 to our 'ohana. We are now 31 families strong! We met our new kapa teacher/master, Kumu Dalani (@kapahawaii). We learned about wauke, paper mulberry, and the first steps to preparing it for beating. It was my first time working with wauke (scraping, splitting, peeling, tapping). We also got to see kapa from many different places, such as Papua New Guinea and Fiji. Today we started Pili Ka Mo’o 🧡 nestled in Waipao, our 3 year journey begins w kapa making. We will be learning and growing alongside 31 other ‘ohana to make LIVING our Hawaiian culture as natural + automatic as breathing. By the time we’re pau, Onipaa will be 9, Olivia will be 5 and Olenna will be 3. Our keiki will GROW up with culture and community engrained in them. Had the greatest morning working with these musically talented keiki from @KamehamehaSchools AND @temaureawhiritoi of Aotearoa. We had about 100 students total helping us rearrange the nursery and clear out some weeds up at #PapahanaKuaola. They accomplished in a couple hours what would hav taken us at least a week or two to do. Although this was the first time the students from KS and NZ ever met, they instantly bonded and made the work so much more pleasurable and efficient. Then on top of all that, the performance at the end by our Aotearoa ‘ohana blew all of us away… our #HuiKūMaoliOla staff were left speechless, as was I. Mahalo to both groups of amazing students and teachers a a huge mahalo to @kumukaleo for arranging all of it. Day 9 of the AgDiscovery Program! Today, we visited the USDA Plant Inspection Station and learned about the step-by-step process involved in Plant Protection (PPQ) and Quarantine Pre-Departure and PPQ HPIS imported and exported commodities. After enjoying bentos for lunch, we headed to Kaneohe and volunteered with Papahana Kuaola to stream freshwater into their taro farm. Pili Ka Mo'o Day 4 - July 2023 We visited Mana Ai and spent a few hours with Uncle Daniel (@manaai) and his family on their farm. Today's goal was to begin working on our papa ku'i 'ai. Dad and Uncle Pono worked on the papa ku'i 'ai under the instruction of Uncle Daniel...planing, grinding, and shaping. Mommy, Aunty Crystal, and I got to help on the farm...clearing weeds and feeding the pigs. We also got to work on our pōhaku ku'i 'ai. Afterwards, we went to get some Hawaiian food at Waiahole Poi Factory (@waiaholepoifactory)! I recommend the Sweet Lady of Waiahole (Haupia Ice Cream with fresh Kulolo). Pili Ka Mo'o Day 2 - May 2023 The day started off very wet with early rain, but it turned out to be a beautiful day. We found some possible pōhaku to carve into pōhaku ku'i 'ai (aka poi pounder). We got a good start testing the hardness of the pōhaku and trying to begin shaping the mole (base). Lunch was awesome with spam musubi, smoked meat, kalo poke, and freshly pounded pa'i'ai. The day was filled with great company as we build our small community that is learning to bring a healthy Hawaiian lifestyle back into the home. Hāinu Lā’au. This week we harvested waiawī (strawberry guava), debarked it and used pōhaku to smooth our own lomi sticks! We learned lomi ‘a’e which is another form of lomilomi, a Hawai’ian healing modality that has been passed on from generation to generation and is used as a form of physical therapy. One of the differences between traditional massage and lomilomi is the spiritual component that begins with pule or prayer. I recently returned to home to Oahu for a dinner collaboration with @beardfoundation @fishsaucebordelaise and @pigandthelady For many reasons this particular visit was deeply meaningful. The connectedness I have with Hawai’i and the constant pull to give back to my Native Hawaiian culture and it’s land is all encompassing this is most apparent when I am on Oahu. I was joined by loved ones on this visit which allowed me to teach as I continue to learn. It allowed for reflection and different levels of growth opportunity. A few of highlights were revisiting @paepaeoheeia & @papahanakuaola Of course @helenashawaiianfoood & @crackseedstore Shoots, can’t forget the impromptu @maunaluamusic And a shout out to @laylowwaikiki for the incredible hospitality. We have stayed at the same place for a decade. This was the first time we changed it up and I think we found our new home away from home. It’s always hard to leave Hawai’i. I always feel it bear down on me when I return to the mainland. As a Native Hawaiian, born and raised in Hawai’i I’m constantly drawn back to the islands, my culture. It’s inspiring to see so many doing meaningful work on Oahu. BREAKING NEWS: Fire at local non-profit in Heʻeia. In all seriousness, yesterday was eventful for the staff at Papahana Kuaola. Thankfully no one was hurt but if you do know anything about Thursday’s criminal activities, please contact the HPD. As “Mapu” stated in the video, Waipao is no longer an illegal dump site, nor is it a hub for criminal activity. Last week I got the opportunity to go on an Alternative Spring Break Trip to Hawaii 🏝 through @weberstate @wsuccel that focused on environmental sustainability ♻️. We worked with 3 different organizations. The first was @sustainablecoastlineshawaii to remove trash 🗑 and microplastics from the beaches 🌊. We learned about the long term effects plastic has on our world 🌎 and ways we can reduce plastic in our lives. Second was @papahanakuaola where we got in the mud while it was raining🌧 to take care of the plant Kalo (or otherwise named as Taro) 🌿. Also learned the importance of nature and to build a connection between land and people. Third was @protectandpreservehawaii to remove invasive species and plant native plants/trees 🪴🌳. Here we learned about the effects of bringing in species to a place without knowing how it will affect the environment. It is best to find out the native species in your area to protect them from dwindling and to give them the best environment to grow 🌱. We also had time to experience the Hawaiian Culture by visiting the @polynesianculturalctr, Hanauma Bay, and more! Overall, it was a life changing experience. I will never forget the memories made and the people I went with on this trip 💙. These keiki “rock”! Yesterday our #ʻekekua ʻohana collected ʻiliʻili & pōhaku from the kahawai to use as natures building blocks.
