Diabetic eye exam ✅ Not great, not terrible. 😔 But at least in my giant pupils visible how the selfie was taken😅 (just zoom on it) Less funny part is that, still are little hemorrhages on my right eye (one year ago were on the left). What does it mean? This damage appears when sugar blocks the tiny blood vessels that goes to the retina, causing them to bleed. In severe cases, it can also lead to blindness. As my biggest fear that I am going to be blind, I am always stressed when diabetes signs appears on my eye, however I know it’s “part of this journey”. So, the check-up is in 6 months, until then I try not to think about it too much, as it is one of those diabetic thoughts that feeds mental problems (if I would not have enough problems anyway 🥴). This is atropine sulfate. It is more toxic than potassium cyanide but it is used in medicine. Aphantasie und Gedächtnis. Aphantasie, eine seltene Störung bei der manche Menschen nicht in der Lage sind sich Dinge visuell vorzustellen, ist bislang kaum erforscht. Eine neue Studie von einem Team aus Sydney liefert nun interessante Kenntnisse darüber, wie sich Aphantasie auf das Gedächtnis auswirkt. Gedächtnis und Zukunftsvorstellungen sind beides kognitive Prozesse, die einen visuellen Anteil im Gehirn benötigen. Obwohl diese inneren visuellen Bilder etwas sind, das unser Verstand ständig heraufbeschwört, wissen wir noch immer nicht viel darüber, wie diese Bilder unsere Fähigkeit beeinflussen, uns tatsächlich an Erlebnisse aus der Vergangenheit zu erinnern. Die Ergebnisse zeigten, dass aphantasische Teilnehmer sowohl für vergangene als auch für zukünftige Ereignisse signifikant weniger Details der Erinnerungen generierten als die Teilnehmer der Kontrollgruppe. Das bedeutet nicht, dass Menschen mit Aphantasie sich schlechter an Vergangenes erinnern können, aber dass sie sich eher an grobe Fakten als an Szenen erinnern. Test für Aphantasie. Wir machen mal eine kleine Übung mit euch: schließt die Augen und stellt euch einen blauen Stern vor. Wie viele Ecken hat er? Hat er ein Muster? Wie echt sieht er aus? Vielleicht gehört ihr ja auch zu den geschätzt 2% der Bevölkerung, die sich darunter nichts vorstellen können. Denn Aphantasie bedeutet genau das: man kann keine Bilder durch das innere Auge sehen oder sich irgendwelche Dinge vorstellen. Die visuelle Vorstellungskraft fehlt einfach. Betroffene berichten auch häufig von traumlosem Schlaf. Bislang konnte man allerdings nur durch solche Selbsttests feststellen, ob man betroffen ist. Nun wurde ein Test von einem Forscher:innen Team aus Australien entwickelt, bei dem man speziell die Augen nutzt um festzustellen ob jemand Aphantasie hat oder eben nicht. Der Test funktioniert, indem man die Pupillenerweiterung der Probanden untersucht. Die Probanden sahen zuerst Bilder auf grauem Hintergrund und danach sollten sie sich die eben gezeigten Bilder einmal mit offenen Augen vorstellen. Bei den Probanden mit normalen Vorstellungsvermögen reagierten die Pupillen genau so wie bei den gezeigten Bildern. Die Probanden mit Aphantasie zeigten keine Änderung der Pupillen. Hearing strain seen through pupil dilation: Recent studies show a correlation between effortful hearing and pupil size. When someone enters into a noisy environment or has a hearing loss, they struggle to process what is being said. These struggles can be seen through our eyes via pupillometry (the study of pupil size). Pupils increase significantly in size when struggling to hear- more so when hearing loss is involved, because our brain has increased cognitive load due to effortful hearing! For the brain to better process in difficult hearing situations, it incorporates the sense of vision to help understand what’s being said. Here's another way infrared video goggles can be used. In this video, you will see the pupils constrict and dilate, which occurs in response to a light being turned on and off inside the goggles. Can you tell when the light is turned on and off? We can use this as a test to see if the eyes response normally to light vs dark, but these lights also act as a fixation point during other tests. They can help us differentiate between central or peripheral causes of nystagmus because the peripheral nystagmus will decrease with fixation, and central nystagmus will not. This is one of the reasons why goggles like this are so important in vestibular testing. Day 4 D is for... Dilation. I suffer from tunnel vision which is a loss of my peripheral vision, which causes me eye strain and can be caused by migraines (which I tend to have a lot of like today).
