Mobility of the Thoracic spine is an important ability of the human body that is often lost as we age. This loss of thoracic mobility is accelerated in our modern lifestyles by the use of computers, cell phones, poor carrying posture, and activities with our arms out in front of us. When we lose mobility in the thoracic spine this effects our upper back, neck and shoulders. It can make us more likely to suffer with problems in the forearm like tennis elbow or carpal tunnel and it can severely effect our ability to breathe properly. Poor mobility in the thoracic spine is associated with things like headaches, TMJ dysfunction, rib subluxation and herniated discs in the thoracic spine. Once mobility here is lost it can take work to regain it as it will usually require a combination of stretching to lengthen habitually shortened tissue and strengthening to stabilize weakened tissue. Dance and Postural Restoration integrate so easily. Even in a hotel lobby, I will demonstrate why a modified closed dance position is the best ribcage expansion technique ever devised. Molly’s brain will be sensing: 🔹left heel 🔹left hip compression 🔹left adductor (she’s pressing her left knee into mine) to allow for: 🔹left posterior ribcage expansion upon inhalation as my right hand is directly on her left mid-low back. 🔹right lateral ribcage expansion 🔹right side of the body lengthening/ungrounding 🔹perhaps some right low trap/right tricep to secure her left ground sense. 🔹upper trunk/head rotation to the right. I’d classify this as a “supported technique” since she has me as her supportive reference. I could even do it as an alternating activity. Just another reason that partner dancing is the single best Postural Restoration program supporting activity you can do.

Gonna be a bit personal for a second. This is the face of someone who has been suffering with quite a bad bout of anxiety and depression for the last 6/7 months. I've struggled to socialise and get out of the house and have had zero self confidence. But I'm talking to a counsellor, taking my antidepressants and have started to exercise and doing breathing and meditation exercises. I just want to be open and say to anyone else who might be struggling it takes time and it can be the most frustrating thing in the world but we will get there and you don't need to feel guilty about not doing certain things. Your mental health is important and if you don't deal with it when it's this bad it will only get worse. And if you aren't in a good place mentally everything else won't matter. In 2 minutes of slow breathing, you will: -lower your heart rate which makes you feel more relaxed in your body. - signal to your vagus nerve that you feel safe, which can counter any feelings of stress or anxiety you feel about going to work. - switch on the ‘relax’ part of your nervous system so you approach things differently as they pop up through the day. It’s less of a ‘threat’ feeling if the my do arise. - things don’t irritate you as easily and you naturally feel more clear headed and positive. - switch your body to a mode that is more effective for digestion. For bonus points - in that 2 mins breathe in through the nose down to your belly. Place one hand on your belly, and as you breathe in, that hand should rise. As you breathe out it falls back with your belly emptying. This is diaphragmatic breathing, which will also: -train you to nose breathe during other parts of your day (good!) - move the muscles in this area which can for many reasons, become stiff and unresponsive to natural breathing. - exercise and tone the muscles in that area. - work your full lungs out. In just 2 minutes!! You’d be mad not to give it a go! Take this as your reminder to take a few moments to breathe consciously. Intentionally. See, you don’t need to breathe for ages to feel the positive benefits of this practice. This is what I’m always trying to communicate with people. Why not commit to 2 mins less social media and instead doing this every morning this week before getting out of bed- you will notice the difference. Remember seeing panicking people being given a paper bag to breathe into on movie scenes? Well, that's not just random act. Breathing in the same air that you've just exhaled in panic helps to circulate some of that CO2 you exhaled back into your system which rebalances our nervous system. ​ When we breathe in a fast, shallow or intense manner, we are breathing out a lot of CO2. Hyperventilation leads to high nervousness, anxiety and in more extreme circumstances even panic attacks. Having too little CO2 may lead to other symptoms like heart palpitations, numbers in your limbs, light-headedness, reduced blood flow to the brain... ​ Even if your normal day-to-day way of breathing is generally quite fast and shallow, you may have persistent deficiency in CO2 which may create a sense of constant nervousness, agitation, irritation or an ever-lingering anxiety and worry. There is a quick test that can tell you if this is you. ​ ● Take 3 deep breaths through your nose. Prepare a timer. ● As you take the 4th inhale, prepare yourself for a long exhale and start the timer. ● Exhale as slowly and controllably for as long as you can. ● Stop the timer when you feel a STRONG URGE TO INHALE. ​ Results? A score of less than 20/30 seconds indicates a high level of anxiety, agitation and sympathetic nervous system activation (aka flight or flight), chronic stress and a generally poor respiratory function. In the Power of Breath workshops you'll learn a technique that is specifically used to help regulate levels of CO2 and therefore help anxiety, panic states, asthma and hypertension (Buteyko method). A fantastic study at the University of Wisconsin determined that stress alone, wasn’t enough to produce an adverse effect on health or any increased risk of premature death. Experiencing increased stress AND holding a belief that stress negatively impacts one’s health on the other hand, was found to increase the risk of premature death by 43%. The study tracked 30 000 adults over an 8 year period. @the.brain.guy __ 🧠 - Other studies have shown that when participants are told “You’re the kind of person whose performance improves under pressure,” it does—by as much as ⅓.
