In fact, the prefrontal cortex isn't fully developed until the age of 25. For these reasons, it's not always the easiest part of the brain to access, and the fight, flight, or freeze response induced by stress makes doing so nearly impossible. In some cultures it is considered a sign of weakness to cry, especially in men. Which is ridiculous, you see crying is a sign that you are alive and present. When babies are born, we look forward to that cry, which is a sign of relief. My daughter would get quiet upset when her sibling took her toys, even if there are 7 better toys and I would wonder why she was crying, to me it was not a crying matter, just get another toy. But to her, the world was collapsing. When people cry, do not invalidate their tears, pain because to you the issue is insignificant, to them it matters. And just because I have experienced someone taking something that belongs to me and I DID NOT express the same emotions does not mean I get it. Saying you have been through the same thing as a way to tell them not to express themselves in that manner can be invalidating. You might have been through something similar but certain factors and situations make it different. Our societies are filled with people with invalidated emotion bottled up, which can lead to anger outbursts, rage and breakdowns. We need to break the cycle. Not a new thought or radical idea—just something I’m constantly having to re-learn (while unlearning a lot of my colonial programming). I know my language has shifted to include LOTS about colonialism and capitalism. You may be someone that, like me a few months ago, thinks “what does colonialism have to do with everyday therapy?” Well, our entire mental healthcare system as it currently exists was founded on beliefs, assumptions, and processes that protected the interests of the capital. As in, folks who were “mad” or “mentally ill” and could not meet growing labor standards in the 1900s were outcasted. Sometimes to asylums, sometimes to prisons—but they were either “treated” with intent to get them back to working demands, or they’d remain incarcerated through most of their lives. Then, as neoliberalism and capitalism took effect in 1980, the field of psychiatry attempted to gain credibility by making the public opinion of mental health more about genetics and biology than about the real social and economic factors shaping people’s mental health. It fit the capitalist agenda for mental health issues to be named as individual “syndromes,” treated by medication and individual services, rather than looking as social change as a resolution. Oddly enough, this was right around the time when cognitive behavioural therapies became more popular… Bigger and better-worded rants to come from this but uh.. This is for you if you are struggling, if you feel like giving up, if you feel like you dont have anymore fight left in you, I want to tell you this. You are worth it, you were put on this earth for a reason, you have a purpose in this life. The pain you’re feeling now is only temporary. Your life is worth fighting for, you’re not alone.
