April is just about over, so here’s one last “Happy Autism Awareness/Acceptance Month!” post. ℹ️ Neurodivergent people often get overstimulated after time spent in public (from the crowds, sirens, strange smells, etc.). We like to retreat to our homes where we can control the environment and recover in a “low sensory zone.” How to Make Your Space Sensory-Friendly, according to me! 🌟Keep a weighted blanket and/or weighted stuffed animal handy (I recommend the pink dino from Target) 🌟Lamps and fairy lights > overhead lighting 🌟Put any fun sensory objects/fidget toys in an easy-to-reach basket 🌟Make a mental note of what brings YOU comfort. Some people need art on the walls for stimulation, while others need a decluttered area to feel calm. Personally, I have a fuzzy blanket (it feels like a hug) that is my go-to comfort item. Maybe you want so keep a speaker in your space to play nature sounds. If you like a soap with some good bubbles, you'll LOVE mine 😁 I frequently tell people - I did NOT like bar soap prior to making my own. When I started making them, it was entirely a hyperfocus exciting project. I did not plan on using them. But then I did this thing and formulated a fantastic recipe. Little Soap Nerd info coming in: all oils and butters have different qualities when saponified. There are different values that need to be considered, and certain ranges they need to stay between for certain qualities (lather is one of them!) I am HAPPY to go into more detail if you ever want to ask - I love talking about soap! Aside from the work my recipe itself does, I also add a couple scoops of sugar to my batches - sugars help to boost lather. Let’s take a walk through the bindery, shall we? Releasing on 4/25 6pm ET, From the Bindery is a small sampling of some of the various tidbits I wanted to share with you all from my first year as a bookbinding student at @nbssboston. If you’ve been following my other account @ash.and.thorn on Instagram (to be renamed TBD) then you’ve seen various snippets of my work. But as is my wont, I couldn’t resist making something a bit more sensory based for y’all. Join me as we step into the bindery for some curious delights! We are all familiar with yellowed book pages or other staining that can come from years on shelves or in other precarious places. Well, you can in fact wash a book! This is done by completely disbinding it and putting each folio (sheet of paper that is folded to make the pages) through a series of pH neutral baths to gently draw the staining and dirt out of the book. When you have gone through this process, you dry and press and then can completely rebind the book and while it won’t be as new, it will be much cleaner and whiter than before. And if you happen to boil down the water from the baths you are left with book dirt-the leftover “pigment” from the cleaning process. I wanted to make a tea blend that is a cheeky nod to this process as when you boil down the liquid you get a curiously sweet aroma from the pages-a concentrated version of the good old book smell we all know and love which is actually caused by the breaking down of books. What is breaking down in these old wood pulp based papers is the chemical lignin which gives off a faint vanilla scent. This tea blend is a black tea, puer, and hojicha blend to give us depth, sweetness, and a touch of toastiness which is then blended with vanilla bean for a final cozy sweet lingering flavor. Dress achieved! I almost had it done on Saturday by sewing in the old zipper only to discover that when I'd changed the design to add the gold band previously, I hadn't accounted for the red skirt joining hip and not waist so it was too small. So I had to pull the whole thing apart again. This is me, Ags. I am a maker utilizing many materials, mediums, and adhesion methods (gluing things together is harder than you think!) and want to learn a little bit of every craft. I made a ball on a string using biothane that I absolutely love so I made a stock of those (contact me if you want to buy one). - Leather - my personal modular utility belt biothane and leather make me happy. I’d previously watched the documentary Paris is Burning and the tv show Pose, but this is a deeper look into the Black & Latinx queer subculture that feels very personal and well-written. Darning a sock! Audiobook: A Gentleman’s Guide to Vice & Virtue by Mackenzi Lee. The cotton on the sock was getting thin so I reinforced it while listening to audiobooks. After finishing Babel, which was powerful & heavy (and which I’ll probably be thinking about for a long time to come), I wanted to read something lighter. A Gentleman’s Guide to Vice & Virtue is well narrated and I love that it centers a bi character who is in love with his male friend in a historical setting. It’s young adult but doesn’t feel childish, and I only wish books like this existed when I was younger. Pretty cool to have bi rep by a bi author. Image ID: 1. I finally got around to snapping some photos of this little felt milk carton I made! The idea of it popped into my head as I was working on the adventure time bug milk carton and I knew I just had to sew it into existence. Doing so was a bit of a task, as it had 28 little pieces that needed stitching together - versus the bug milk having 15 - but I liked having the chance to try stitching some cow print and I think it turned out pretty cute! 🐄 It measures 5cm x 2.5cm x 2.5cm and was filled with repurposed polyester stuffing.
