Manipulating sounds. Learner is 8 years old. Reading intervention takes a step by step approach, leaving no missing rung as he climbs the reading ladder. Identifying the sounds in words, and deleting or swapping sounds to make new words. An example of manipulation is: "What happens when you take off the /g/ in 'dog' and swap it with /ck/?" How long do your learners exhibit separation anxiety? As an Early childhood Educator, working with children in the preschool was an amazing experience for me that comes with lots of commitments. I get tensed and exhausted within the first 3 weeks of resumption. It is usually a hectic moment for me. Seeing children of very strong attachment styles cry every day bothers me. Most children experience separation anxiety at the beginning of the term like this. Adjusting to school again after the holiday sometimes looks impossible. As time went on I adopted a few tips that worked for me. 📌 I observe children who are strongly attached to their parents and ask their parents about the child, their preferences, and their nicknames. This information helps relate with the children. I call them by their nicknames, get them to be around me, play, and smile at them often. 😁 This makes them feel secure. As time goes on, I become their closest pal during school time. Then the cry reduces and stops gradually. 😅 Nothing gets children secure when they know you care about them. 📌 I also encourage parents to get children enough snacks this season. Children love it when you give them gifts (especially something edible). Ensure it is their favorite. You don't want to see their reaction if it is not their preferred snacks. 😅 Gifts make children feel safe to be with you. Here’s a saying I use with my students to help them remember: No English words end in V, it will always be followed by an E! Let’s looks at some examples: Have Give Solve Serve Words in English also do not end in the letter j. J did not exist as a letter in early Old English. Because of this, when you hear the /j/ sound at the end of an English word, it will end in -ge or in -dge. 🗓️I started my Monday research posts a few years ago for one reason--knowledge is the one thing they cannot take from us. When we are equipped with the knowledge about how children learn to read, and when we know where we found that knowledge, we hold the upper hand. 🧑💼In a world where politics dominates education, our knowledge about what is right for children is invaluable. 🧠These 3 studies I have listed all show the importance of intervening in the early grades. Early intervention is essential. But I want to make a couple of points here. 1️⃣ Intervening early is not the same as referring a student to child study. We have an obligation to give these children both solid first instruction and appropriate intervention before we start the process. 2️⃣ Just because early intervention is more effective, it does not mean that we cannot or should not intervene with older students. They can absolutely make progress, but it will be harder and take more work than if we did it in the early grades. 3️⃣ Strong core is important, but it is not enough. I've heard of districts trying to only use reading specialists as coaches in K-2 and intervening in 3-5. It is only with strong core AND effective intervention for our neediest students that we can see the results we want. 💻Standardized tests are a necessary evil, I know that. But one of the biggest downfalls of standardized tests is that the pressure to succeed is placed in the upper grades. When standardized test scores drop, the easy thing to do is to say "we need more intervention in the upper grades." ❌ But we are here to do what is right, NOT what is easy. And what is right is to give enough attention in the primary grades that the need for intervention in the upper grades is not so strong. 😵💫It's not a quick fix. But when we offer our children in the primary grades the appropriate intervention, it WILL eventually help those standardized test scores. ❓I want to know--who do your reading specialists see? I have a conundrum . . . The teacher reviewers who read our States of Matter book loved using pancakes as an example of a chemical change. Our scientific advisor is concerned that it's not as obvious an example as wood changing to ash. You're on the ground level teaching these concepts, so you tell me. Would your kids get this? Comprehension… so much to learn and the research is still evolving. I’ll admit I taught skills in isolation with worksheets and I thought asking questions at the end was comprehension and boy was I wrong! Here’s a closer look 👀 at the mini-anchor chart from my most recent reel🔎 — so you can save it for later! As we talk about how to introduce a brand new morpheme to students, let’s compare & contrast it to how we’d teach a brand new sound. 👩🏻🏫 🚨 FYI: There isn’t just ONE “correct” way to introduce a new sound. This is the gist of an instructional routine I tend to follow. 🟡Moving from Speech to Print, I tell students we’re going to learn a new sound today! ⚪️The sound is /a/. Say /a/. 🗣️ 🟡We hear the sound /a/ in the beginning of words like apple, alligator, and astronaut. 👂🏼 🔀Sometimes, I’ll reverse this and start with a series of words — seeing if students can use their phonemic awareness skills (isolation) to hear the sound the words have in common. ⚪️I typically introduce the grapheme afterwards to label our sound. “We can spell the /a/ sound with the letter Aa.” *️⃣Remember, this is just a quick gist! (Do you introduce sounds similarly? 🤔) So, how is this similar (or different) when it comes to introducing a brand new morpheme? 🤔 🚨Another FYI: There isn’t just ONE “correct” way to introduce a new morpheme either! We’ll take a look at ONE potential way it can go! 🟡I DON’T want to move from speech to print with the morphological unit on its own because morphemes can sound different from word to word. ⚪️I’m going to introduce the morpheme in the context of a word (or series of words). 🗣️Ex: “Say cat. Celebrating that today I submitted the FINAL assignment for my LAST graduate course required for my Reading Specialist/Literacy Coach Grad Classes! 🎉 I made it, friends! 😮💨 I found this lovely infographic from @teachthought shared by a classmate @gvsuliteracystudies so timely & inspiring!! My goals moving forward: • Start right away 🧑🎓 : Pass the MTTC Exam (Michigan K-12 Reading Specialist Teacher Certification) • Start small: 🌱I will continue offering private one on one tutoring to help students make lasting progress in reading and in their confidence as readers. I already have six students lined up for this summer and can’t wait to get started. 🤩 • Stay curious: 🤨 Look into a Dyslexia Intervention Certification next as I see this as a critical need in education. • Listen to students:👂 Ask my current small group reading intervention students that I’ve been working with since January to give me feedback as the school year comes to a close. My 3rd, 4th and 5th graders have done such smart, challenging work in our time together and I want to ask them: What did they like or not like? What part of our work helped them the most? What will they remember as they move on? Getting feedback from students is incredibly vital to teaching! 🫶 • Reflect, Reflect, Reflect: 🧠 Take some time to look back at the knowledge, resources & takeaways I’ve gained from the four Graduate courses I’ve completed over the past 19 months. Teacher and expert reviewed and approved—really!!! When it comes to reading, I take what I do very seriously. I have seen my kids come home with so many science books that are just too hard for them: both concepts and language. That’s why we’re creating Charge into Science decodable readers. These books follow the same scope and sequence as our current decodable readers, introducing kids to science topics in an approachable—and DECODABLE—way. I’m not an expert on these topics. And I'm not a teacher. That’s why in addition to being reviewed by @mwliteracy to make sure the words are decodable, we’re bringing on a group of first and second-grade teachers to confirm that the content in each book aligns with classroom science standards and is age-appropriate. But of course, none of that matters if the science isn't right. That's why I'm also bringing in experts in the field of each book to review the content and make sure it is 100% accurate. Our weather book has now been approved by Dr. Mark Miller, who has a Ph.D. in meteorology from Penn State. Dr. Miller is a the director of the Rutgers University Photochemical Assessment Monitoring Site and specializes in cloud physics. Also, he assures me that yes, he can in fact predict the weather. For weeks, she refused to work with me. “Uh-uh. I’m not doing this today,” she’d say the instant she walked into the middle school library. Then she’d leave. I didn’t blame her. She was in 8th grade, flagged as one of the highest risk learners in the middle school. Weeks went by, and I’d still invite her to work with me even though I knew she’d say no. Grown-ups had let her down. Why would this be any different? Eventually, I convinced her to just work on writing the letters of the alphabet with me. The amount of trauma this 8th grader experienced — the amount of shame and embarrassment for not knowing how to write all 26 letters of the alphabet — was simply heavy. The past few months, we’ve taken our supplies to a secluded corner of the library. She asks me to sit on the floor and do our work so no one can peek in from the doors or windows and see her getting the help she needs and dare I say — wants. This week, she completed Track 1 of @eblireads. I still cannot believe it! The amount of pride I have for her is off the charts. Does she have a ways to go before she reaches grade level expectations? Sure. But this accomplishment is a big deal! “What can I bring to celebrate?” I ask. “How about some soft chocolate chip cookies?” she says. “Just not the kind in the blue package. I don’t like those.” You got it, girl. Let’s enjoy the very best soft chocolate chip cookies, then we’ll get back to work. ❓Have you ever felt like jumping right into a decodable after learning a skill was too much for your kiddos? 📖Me too, so I knew I needed something that could help bridge the gap between that initial introduction and reading a decodable story. 📖These decodable word lists and sentences were born from that need. My kiddos start by reading the 10 words on the left, then reading the sentences on the right. 📚This practice with smaller units helps to build their proficiency with the skill, making it easier once we move into longer decodable texts. 📖And for my earliest readers K/1, my intervention friends stay at this level for a while. A typical decodable texts asks too much of them. On Wednesday, I was able to job shadow a reading interventionist at Washington Elementary School in Bay City! 📚✏️ Some of you may be asking…what exactly does a reading interventionist do? Well, I am happy to answer that question! A reading interventionist aids children who need extra literacy support beyond what is done in their classrooms. I am so happy that there are positions like these being filled in our local schools to ensure that our children are getting the literacy education they deserve! 📖 In my time at Washington Elementary, I was able to observe one-on-one lessons between reading interventionists and children from grades K-2. I was even able to interact with some of the children myself, which was so meaningful to me! 💖 This experience definitely reminded me just how important early literacy education is, even on a local level, which is exactly why I founded Kenadie’s Korner.
