I devoured this 🥰🦁 The Lion of Lark-Hayes Manor by Aubrey Hartman is a novel that will stir your heart. If you love Narnia, magic, books, and curses, then this is a must. The Lion of Lark-Hayes Manor shows us the power of books and the impact literature has on our lives. This story follows Poppy as she stumbles upon Old Magic. After making a deal with a water nymph, books start disappearing and becoming erased from memory. Poor Poppy has to see the change this has on the people around her. I had to keep turning the pages to see how Poppy was going to reverse this curse. It's a powerful book beautifully written, and each chapter starts with a wonderful illustration. Hartman explores themes of friendship and family in a way that is so relatable for young readers. I also loved how meta this text was - it really unraveled the power of books and reading. At one point in the story, Poppy talks about how books have empowered her throughout her life and how books have given her the escape she needs to refuel. Poopy says about reading: "I get to be someone else for a little bit. I'm the main character. I'm all the characters. I'm everything in the story. And it feels good to be big when everything else is trying to keep me small." ❤️ Thank you @aubrey_hartman for creating this lovely book. #mgreads #mgfantasy #mgfiction #middlegradereads #middlegradebooks #middlegradebookcovers #middleschoolreading #middleschoolbooks #thelionoflarkhayesmanor #familyreads

This book was imaginary ✨️ (iykyk 😉) I first heard of this book on @bookbairn instagram page. If you aren't already following her, you should! Her recommendations are amazing, and I love her newsletter, too. OK, now for the story . . . The Land of Roar is one of three books, and I'm already excited to check out the other two. This UK bestseller is a portal fantasy with themes of imagination and family - all my favorite things for middle grade! I liked this book right away, but it really captured my heart about midway through. The setting was creative and vivid (plus there was a map!). The characters were so distinct, dynamic, and relatable. Even the dragons had their own personalities! Gotta say, the Lost Girls and Arthur and Rose's grandfather were my favorite. Jenny McLachlan did a great job weaving humor throughout this fantasy to keep it fun. She also did a great job bringing everything together to create a suspenseful and satisfying ending. I will definitely be saving this one for when my daughter is a bit older. If you love #mgfantasy this is a must. Has anyone else read this one yet? Are there any other middle grad fantasies you'd recommend? Happy reading, everyone! #middlegradefiction #middlegradereads #MG #middlegrade #middleschoolbooks #mgreads #mgfiction #landofroar #middleschoolreading #booksofinstagram #readingtime #readtogether #mgbookstagrammers #mgbookshelf

April 28th Featured Book Review # 1,313: The Witch’s Boy Written by Kelly Barnhill Cover Art by Jon Klassen @jonklassen Published by Algonquin on Sept. 16, 2014 Recorded by HighBridge Listening Length: 9 hours and 58 minutes Read by Ralph Lister This book is essentially a fairy tale that combines multiple story lines involving two children, Ned and Áine. Ned is dealing with the loss of his identical twin brother. What’s worse is that villagers are convinced the wrong boy lived. Meanwhile Áine is the resourceful young daughter of the Bandit King. The Bandit King wants to steal the magic Ned’s mother protects. This was a good book but at 400 pages I felt like the plot meandered a bit in the middle. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ out of 5 GOOD #thewitchsboy #kellybarnhill #fantasyfiction #middleschoolreading #algonquinyoungreaders #fairytales #magicisreal #magiciseverywhere #magicisallaroundus #highbridgeaudio #recordedbooks #judgeabookbyitscover #coverart #jonklassen #bookstagram #readbyralphlister #ralphlister

When literacy skills improve, so does behavior! That’s because older struggling readers sometimes label themselves as “dumb” and can’t understand why they’re “different.” They are tired from working so hard to not see the fruits of that labor. And their behaviors cover what has become a self-esteem, self-worth issue. When we validate their struggles, show them small successes that build into larger ones, and set and achieve goals, behaviors calm. Students start to trust us and themselves, and success begins to breed success. We spend the first five days of intervention building those attitudes and a growth mindset. You can use our proven way of getting students intentionally engaged in activities that will label your class “the fun one,” while building momentum! Contents of our latest scholastic book box 📦 😍 During study hall, a coworker walked into my room to deliver this scholastic book box, and immediately all the kids rushed my desk! I won this box as part of a contest @scholasticteachers did on their Instagram and so the kids were so excited to see what was inside. Immediately, they began calling dibs and loved checking everything out. I was about to yell at them for being so crazy when it hit me - they are excited about and fighting over BOOKS! My heart is full ♥️ so many of my students hated reading at the beginning of the year, but by giving them choice and time to read, they've fallen in love with reading too 📚 🥰 I just had to share this with all of you. Ever thought about, "how do I get kids to write about their thinking while reading?" These visuals have helped me a lot with middle schoolers! Teaching kids that writing down your thinking can be done in a VARIETY of ways, especially with where you are at in the book! Beginning tends to be FLAGGING Mid beginning tends to be JOTTING or ANNOTATING Mid end tends to be PROCESS PAGE Near end tends to be SYNTHESIS PAGE Of course there is no rules and kids can try out ANY during any point of their reading! #ELAR #readingworkshop #readingteacher #middleschoolreading #FPMS #teacherscollege #tcrwp

New Video: I tell you this is the age that reading really takes off and finding good books is hard. There are a lot of recommendations list out there for this age, but each child is different in their interest and each family has different standards in what they want their kids reading at certain ages😉 Most of these were good, maybe a mom fail in one choice 🤦‍♀️ I need to get back to pre-reading😉 But thankful he enjoys it for this time. Fun change of pace for my review space: Win the Next Pitch by Dr. Curtis Ickes We’ve spent the last ten days or so with our daughter’s family so we could catch some baseball tournaments our young grandson was playing in, and spend some time with family. He’s a reluctant reader, so when he told his dad that one of his coaches had talked about this book at practice, our SIL immediately bought it for him. And this week, our budding baseball star and I spent part of each evening working our way thru it. Great bonding time for us, and the book focuses on sharing some strategies for young players to mentally reset each time they struggle or run into adversity. It does a good job of providing repetition and multiple examples of its practice in action while weaving it into a fun story about baseball. Highly recommend it for elementary age athletes. It was clear this morning that the entire team has learned some reset skills because they came back from a very rough couple of games yesterday to decisively win their first game this morning. Love that for them. EDIT at the end of the day: They WON their tournament!!! So proud of this team!! ⚾️🎉🎊 Grownup reading took a hit this week, as it always does when we visit this busy crew. So I guess the question I’m asking you, do I count this in my April numbers to help buffer that? 😂 #winthenextpitch #baseballseason #middleschoolreading #happyreaders #youngreaders #familytime #newreview

12 yo approves. My daughter really liked this one too. Publisher’s Summary: Eleven-year-old Perry was born and raised by his mom at the Blue River Co-ed Correctional Facility in tiny Surprise, Nebraska. His mom is a resident on Cell Block C, and so far Warden Daugherty has made it possible for them to be together. That is, until a new district attorney discovers the truth–and Perry is removed from the facility and forced into a foster home. When Perry moves to the “outside” world, he feels trapped. Desperate to be reunited with his mom, Perry goes on a quest for answers about her past crime. As he gets closer to the truth, he will discover that love makes people resilient no matter where they come from . . . but can he find a way to tell everyone what home truly means? Disclaimer: I personally haven't pre-read it. There is not so many hours in my day 🙃 Daughter says it's clean. Reasons to read :) Aru Shah The whole series made me delve into Indian mythology the same way Percy Jackson got me obsessed with Greek mythology. I’m not really sure about others but I really love books with a strong female lead with non toxic female besties. This book literally makes me think of girl power. There is also a bit of middle school level romance in it .Actually the whole series is absolutely perfect for middle schoolers but I would also recommend it to people to f all ages. The characters are rather original but do not lose the authenticity of the mythology and also have great senses of humor . 4.7/5🤩 This series is also seriously underrated so do give it a try and let me know what you think #aru #arushah #roshanichoksi #bookrecommendations #underratedbooks #underratedbookclub #mythology #indianmythology #indianmythologybooks #bookworm #middleschool #middleschoolreading

NO PREP, ready to use projectable slides for each Stage K sight word. This can be used with students grades K-12, whether they are learning sight words at grade level or are secondary, struggling readers. Use the slides on their own or in conjunction with your multisensory phonics instruction. Use just the word and slide or use in conjunction with a tactile/multisensory activity such as building the word with tiles, writing on a gel board or in sand, or using pop it’s to “pop” each sight word. This can also be used in centers, as a whole group activity or used with a small group/intervention group! Read words and sentences of learned words each week for spiral review. ⏰ Independent reading time is a very important part of the day for kids. For far too many, school may well be the only time they get to spend reading real books. 📚But we have to ensure kids are getting the most from it. This is, after all, still an instructional time. We have to teach them, guide them, coach them. This time is precious, we all—teachers AND kids—must use it wisely. What would you add to this list of 6 tips? #independentreading #timetoread #timetoread📚 #letthemread #elementaryreadingteacher #middleschoolreading #middleschoolreadingteacher #growingreaders

Mixing it up a little to share this super fun Middle school book with you. This book takes the Grimm tales and turns them into a fun book full of adventures. Twin siblings Willow and Jake are ancestors of the original Grimm brothers and find themselves as “Grimmwalkers”. They end up stuck in Grimmworld, and find out their best friends have been turned into Hansel and Gretel, and it’s up to them to save them. My tween son really enjoyed this story. It is great for probably 10+, as it is just a little bit darker with some of those facts from the Grimm stories. A super fun book to pick up for your younger readers!! Thank you @shadowmountainpub for the advance copy. All opinions are my own. 🍎📚SCHOOL READ📚🍎 One of my favorite things about working as a 1-1 Instructional Assistant is that I get to “learn” with the kids and get to see them connect with what they are learning. And of course my absolute favorite thing is reading books with them and watching them fall in love with reading and literature. Right now we are studying the Holocaust and bouncing between learning about Anne Frank and reading Salt to the Sea by @rutasepetysauthor. I don’t read a ton of historical fiction but I absolutely love the way this book is written. The story is broken up into very short easy to read “chapters” from 4 different povs. It’s about the most deadly maritime disaster in history and until now I had never heard of it. When you think of WWII and the Holocaust you think of Hitler and Concentration camps. But there are hundreds of tragedies surrounding this awful time in history that many know little about. Here’s the blurb: In 1945, World War II is drawing to a close in East Prussia and thousands of refugees are on a desperate trek toward freedom, almost all of them with something to hide. Among them are Joana, Emilia, and Florian, whose paths converge en route to the ship that promises salvation, the Wilhelm Gustloff. Forced by circumstance to unite, the three find their strength, courage, and trust in each other tested with each step closer toward safety. Just when it seems freedom is within their grasp, tragedy strikes. Not country, nor culture, nor status matter as all ten thousand people aboard must fight for the same thing: survival. A tribute to the people of Lithuania, Poland, and East Prussia, Ruta Sepetys unearths a shockingly little-known casualty of a gruesome war, and proves that humanity can prevail, even in the darkest of hours. Winner of the Carnegie Medal #1 New York Times Bestseller International Bestseller QOTD: what is your favorite historical fiction book or favorite event in history to study? #bookstagram #middleschoolreading #wilhelmgustloff #salttothesea📖 #rutasepetys #instructionalassistant #fortheloveofreading #teachthemtoread #literaturelover

Book 11 “Borders” by Thomas King *graphic novel *lower grades *English beginners A boy is and his mother are travel by car from Canada to America to visit the boy’s sister Laetitia who moved to Salt Lake City. At the US border, they are asked about their citizenship. The mother responds, “Blackfoot.” Although she is interrogated for a long time, she continues giving the same answer and does not answer “American” or “Canadian.” The US officers do not allow them to enter but send them back. At the Canadian border, the officers also ask about their citizenship. The mother, again, responds, “Blackfoot.” The Canadian official also deny them entry. And this is how their journey between the borders starts. Will they make it to Salt Lake City? *A very easy read as there is very little text - the latter which I did not like. *Nevertheless, I think it provides for a range of discussion and thinking questions for students: what is citizenship? What is identity? ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 #borders #bordersgraphicnovel #bordersbythomasking #graphicnovel #easyread #middleschoolenglish #middleschoolreading #identity #citizenship #wheredoibelong #readmorebooks #middleschoolgraphicnovel #eslreading #readandthink #bookstagram #blackfoot #bibliophile #library #readinthelibrary #librarybooks #booksbooksbooks #readinginthelibrary #ilovebooks

Here’s a helpful tip for parents working with their little ones. This focuses on auditory, visual, AND kinesthetic learners. Use one finger to follow along when sounding out the words to your reader, then let them copy you. I recommend alternating turns and repeating the words at least three times. #readaloud #readingtails #earlylearningreading #earlylearning #elementaryreading #therapydog #readingtherapydog #readacrossamerica #readingtips #waynecountypubliclibrary #goldsboro #goldsboronc #readinghelp #kindergartenreading #middleschoolreading #highschoolreading #dogswithapurpose

Hatchet is a complete novel study that’s ready to go with very little preparation by the teacher. This book is a great fit for middle school language arts. It aligns with many of the common core state standards. #novelstudy #hatchet #novel #middlegradenovel #middleyears #middleschool #middleschoolreading #reading #literacy #ela #languagearts #languageartsteacher #bookstagram #middleschoolela #grade6 #grade7 #grade8 #grade5 #ampeduplearning #mbt #madebyteachers #tpt #teacherspayteachers

I don’t know about you, but I feel like teaching vocabulary has taken a back seat in my district’s curriculum, but it is SO important. Here are a few of my go-to resources: **Academic Word Posters – I love hanging these posters that focus on our different units to help remind kids of key words they need to know. My students always love playing online quiz games with Kahoot, Blooket, Gimkit, etc. to reinforce their remembrance of what these words mean. I swap out posters as we change units – some words reappear over and over. 😊 **Self-Selected Vocab Graphic Organizer + Assessment – I love giving my students opportunities to choose their own vocabulary words. They can choose any words they find challenging, interesting, funny, etc. It makes it more meaningful for students when they get to choose, and I’ve found that more often than not, the majority of them choose words I would have chosen for them anyway! Included in this is an assessment that provides a way for them to work with and show understanding of the words they’ve chosen. 🤩 **Teacher-selected Vocabulary Graphic Organizer + Quizzes for To Kill a Mockingbird and Night (and coming soon…The Outsiders). Sometimes you have a group you just may not totally trust to choose their own words wisely 😉, so this has you covered if you’re teaching either of these two classic stories. How do you incorporate vocabulary in your classroom? What are your go-to strategies – share in the comments, because I’m sure we can all learn from one another! #middleschoolteacher #middleschoolreading #middleschoolela #teachingvocabulary #buildingvocabulary #vocabulary #vocab #teacherresources #teachingresources #teacherspayteacher #tpt

Thank you for reviewing my children’s chapter book, ‘Clique, Clique, STOP’ D&J. 5.0 out of 5 stars Teaches Children To Embrace Diversity In Others Reviewed in the United States on February 9, 2024 Clique, Clique, STOP tells the story of Isabella (Bella) Santiago, a biracial middle school student who has moved to a new neighborhood and started at a new school, which is dramatically different from the one she was used to. This bright and friendly young lady tries hard to make friends at her new school, but is instead teased and called “half breed,” and snickered at by her female classmates when she attempts to play sports. Bella quickly observes that the students have their own cliques that are divided up by race or ethnicity. Bella has an idea on how to quelch the divisiveness and help her classmates to embrace their differences. She talks to her guidance counselor about starting a “Heritage Club” which will celebrate the cultures, religions and ethnicities of the entire student body. She wants to make sure that no one is left out, and that everyone feels open to discussing their likes and dislikes and way of life, in hopes that they will realize that although we are different, we are also alike in very many ways. Although initially reluctant, over 20 students show up for the very first meeting, including the girl that disliked her the most. This book is highly appropriate for this increasingly divisive world we are living in, where children are bullied and depression is increasingly prevalent. It is an excellent tool for middle school teachers to teach a unit on diversity and embracing our differences. With this book, teachers, parents and students will help emphasize the fact that we are truly alike in very many ways, and that there is only one race – the human race! . . . #childrensbooks #kidsbook #chapterbooksforkids #nocliques #cliques #readme #librarybook #librarian #schoollibrarian #momsofinstagram #diversitybooks #diversitybooksforkids #isabella #biracial #middleschoolteacher #middleschoolreading

The library has always been my favorite part of the classroom. The year this was my library, every time a student finished a book, they wrote the title of their book on a paper leaf and put it on the tree. It didn't take long to fill it up! #classroomlibrary #libraryinspiration #middleschoolreading #middleschoolela #helloteacher

Welcome to The Magic Library! This company was created with the goal to help middle schoolers and highschoolers not only better understand but better appreciate the literature that they are given in their courses. I have loved books even before I knew how to read, and it has always saddened to me to see so many young people in the world believe reading to be a chore, unenjoyable, hard, and even boring. This company will strive to help young people learn what a joy reading can be with interactive audiobooks, work along project videos, author summaries and histories, and a variety of other engaging content to help bring the world of ink and paper to life! #schoolliterature #books #book #highschool #homeschool #reading #classicbooks #famousauthors #audiobooks #highschoolreadinglist #highschoolreading #middleschoolreading
