15 days into Morocco... What to say? It is really hard. On a budget of £7 a day for two people here it is even harder. The divide of rich and poor is painfully noticeable. The litter gets quite depressing after a while. Each day saying "we will settle into it" but it is difficult. Hard to take the van close towns etc. means it's hard to get food. Drinking water is difficult to come by and the safety of some of the park ups are questionable. Have you ever paid the "expected tip"? I know these happens in many countries. Whether we agree with it or not, it is good to be aware of it. In our last visit to Petra, we were approached by some men offering us horse ride. When we asked the price, they told us the fee is included in the "Jordan pass" we bought on arrival at the airport (it includes visa and the attractions of choice). They said we could just provide them with a tip at the end of the ride. At our destination, they requested a specific tip of 5 Dinars (7 USD or 25 Dhs) per person which turned out to be the actual price of a ride, so it is not included in the Jordan pass and it is not a tip, but effectively the price. Tips to avoid altitude sickness | Travelling to the Andes promises surreal landscapes, culture, food and unforgettable memories but it is important to be prepared to travel to a high altitude destination if your body is not used to it (less oxygen). Here some recommendations based on our (many not all successful ) experiences travelling to the Andes: 🔸Slowly going up. If you can, try to avoid going from a low altitude location to a higher one by plane. The sudden difference can affect you. If you can reach to a point where you can continue by train or by car, it will help your body to adjust smoothly. 🔸Drink "mate". Its a good idea in preparation to level up to drink some "mate" as it helps wiht the digestion making it easier to adjust. 🔸Don't over eat. The food in the mountains is delicious and chances are that you will find dishes you have never tried before and are keen to try them all. Do it in small portions and try to avoid snacking. The digestion is slower in the mountains, so it's likely you will feel full most of the time. 🔸Listen to your body. If you are feeling agitated or having difficulty to catch your breath, take it easy. Walk at your own speed and avoid intensive exercise. 🔸If you do get ill. Keep moving. Altitude sickness might slow you down and remove your appetite, but it is important to keep moving (if you are able to do so) and eat to boost your energy and get better. 🔸Some hotels count with oxygen tanks available if needed. Sometimes just 5 minutes of it will bring you back on your feet. The cabanas are the best alternative for a stay in the jungle. Sleeping to the sounds of mother nature is something impossible to describe, a sense of incomparable freedom. Each cabanas has a terrace area where you can sit to relax overlooking the palm trees protected with an almost unnoticeable mosquito net (can you even see it?). If you are lucky you will spot the monkeys playing by your cabana. In fact one morning we were awaken by the famous red howler monkey and we had to run outside in our pijamas to see him. I've always seen travelling as an opportunity to learn, but nothing more precise than Gabriel back in school learning about the Canopy and rainforest when we just came back from there, where he could observe the jungle from up the trees and see all the animals he now reads about in class. Last holidays were ipad free and we intend to keep it like this going forward. We feel that holidays are the moment where we have the opportunity to be present, without commitments, interruptions and discovering together. I was thrilled to see the kids waking up early to run towards the play area and create a hut on the hotel garden in Bulgaria. Needless to say this was their favourite hotel. Here some ideas offline that worked for us: ⚡Small carry on board games: Sleeping Queens is our favourite, but we also took a small chess ⚡Fidget toys : especially for the car trips, it helps the kids stay active while relaxing ⚡ Music: Download your family favourites and ask the kids to play DJ. ⚡Take advantage of the surroundings to create playful opportunities such as treasure hunt, shinny rocks collecting (fear not, you can casually forget them at the hotel 🤣) And finally, use the time to connect 💚 Travelling (although common for most of us) is a big privilege. Most of my biggest memories of childhood are those summer trips to the beach, experiencing a rainforest for the first time and running under it, the anecdotes with my sisters playing in the closet of the hotels...
