I then passed out in a bin on the street. The link between burgeoning outsider artists and the square community (who had money to buy the art). I was lucky enough to have met her two or three times at shows in the late 80s, when I first moved to NYC for college and met @futuradosmil and Dondi (who introduced us). An excerpt from an interview of Ms. Astor by @fab5freddy: “It sounds unbelievable now, but in 1981 no one downtown had heard of graffiti art, rap music, or break dancing. Fred gave me a magical mystery tour. Forget the fact that I was white and female—Fred let it be known that I was “down by law,” and that was all it took. One night, I ran into FUTURA, DONDI, and ZEPHYR in front of Peppermint Lounge as they were all trying to get in. I swept them up, and we sailed through the door. My B-boy reputation soared.” Her gallery — widely accepted to be the first in NYC to ever show graffiti as fine art — was established in 1981 in the lower east side of Manhattan which at the time was definitely not safe, clean or frequently visited by white people and was named “FUN gallery” wherein she introduced the world to the works of Basquiat, Haring, Futura, Dondi, Lee Quinones and countless others.
