I started this account just a few months ago in the hopes of bringing more attention to my services, and also for it to be a place where I can deposit solid tidbits of knowledge that can hopefully help writers out when they need it. And although I know that 100 followers is a measly number to some, to me it's the first in a long line of milestones that I can't wait to accomplish! Overwriting is essentially an issue of repetition, hammering readers with variations of the same idea—sometimes even more of our best stuff. It saps momentum by overdoing what’s already clear. It overcomplicates the narrative, obscuring the throughlines you’re working so hard to create. At the story level, overwriting repeats actions and ideas that are already clear to readers, packing in too much backstory, being unable to identify what’s central to the story. At the paragraph level, overwriting creates competing that ideas crowd out clarity. At the sentence level, overwriting muddies the picture with multiple images. The goal is for the writing to “disappear” so that readers stay immersed in the story. But pruning our darlings is painful. It’s so hard to resist insisting, to be sure that readers have heard us. Back in the drafting phase of life and feeling full, full, full. The race between my mind and my fingers has begun once again and its that falling in love feeling mixed with the meditative orange-green mindscape that comes from looking out the window on a long train ride. . Every story has a time of day and this one is that space between day ending and night beginning. When the clouds fade into stars and the world is washed in blue. This is the hour where I feel this story swell and cry because sometimes tears happen when you're on the precipice of creating while simultaneously releasing control, holding an idea as loosely as possible but trying not to let it slip away entirely. . As poetry month comes to an end, I can’t help but reflect on the last 2 yrs. I self published 2 ebooks and had 15 pieces of poetry published in various digital art/lit mags. I never thought my journey would take me here. It took me a long time to believe in my talent, but now that I have, I’m not letting go. It’s not cheesy to believe in yourself or your dreams. It’s also not selfish or self-centered to be proud of yourself. Be proud! Pat yourself on the back! You did that girl/guy! What do you do when things don't go as planned? That's the #WriterFriendsChallenge for today. I can only speak for myself, so... ⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️ 1️⃣ Commence Muppet flail. Seriously, my first response is to freak out. 2️⃣ Overthink and Catastrophize. I will sit and dredge up everything I've ever done wrong and imagine everything that can go wrong. I'll spend about 15 minutes doing this. 3️⃣ Calm down. Having purged my system of all the ick, I can settle back down, reinstall my thinking brain (as opposed to my lizard brain), and... 4️⃣ Brainstorm solutions. I'll spend a couple of hours jotting down ideas to solve the conundrum. If that doesn't work, I... 5️⃣ Do something physical that gets me out of my head, which often brings a fresh perspective. 6️⃣ Pivot and Flow. Sometimes, there is no fixing something. When that happens, adjusting your mindset and/or expectations can go a long way towards making a difference. ⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️ How do you manage the unexpected in your life? ✍ I challenge you to write every weekday for two weeks in May starting on the 13th. Join me while we get some words written and get closer to our goals! 📚 Why Participate Maybe you want to continue a previous streak, have a story in your head that you need to get out, or just want to start a daily writing routine. The two weeks of writing accountability will help you accomplish those tasks. 📚 What’s Involved You pick what you want to accomplish every day. For example, do you want to write 1,000 words a day, or do you want to edit for one hour? Whatever it is, set your goal and try to stick to it.
