All of me, these numb words stuck on the tip of my tongue; an alphabet asphyxiated with the ink in my pen. A stuttering of unfinished sentences wanders aimlessly in my head; punch-drunk and never invited to be said. A mouthful of grit-teeth and indentured utterances wait in queue with dotted I’s & crossed T’s. My Word-Perfect assembly of choke, dies hard on the soft of my pallet. The other drafts? Around 2002 at a mystic shop on Fillmore street in San Francisco, a psychic said I was going to meet my Svengali. At the time, the Spanish television company where I worked in sales just merged with a big, general market one. I guess she knew that in a week I’d hook up with my future husband, a rising star in the Television Ad business, over a tray of jalapeño poppers, pints of beer at a bar called Grumpys. In those courting years however, I worked in his shadow and while I know I was a hard worker, I didn’t have his reputation and he certainly didn’t have random women in our business telling him, and telling anyone that would listen that I would never marry him, that I was using him as a fling. I mean that would have been awesome, right? Sadly however like a bad telenovela, it happened to me. My partner/husband/baby daddy was born on Picasso’s birthday. So I get Franciose Gilot, we married a larger than life characters in our respective business. Picasso was her Svengali. They painted together, had two kids but she had to leave this iconic self absorbed, unfaithful and controlling artist only to go and marry Jonas Salk, the larger than life science nerd who cured polio. She wrote of her experience with Picasso and it caused drama. How dare she state the obvious! There’s a museum dedicated to him in Paris, Barcelona and his native Malaga for cubist’s sake! As a result, her me too, table for one moment forced her into retirement from art in France. Here’s the bright side- there’s a beautiful exhibit at the Picasso Museum in Paris with Franciose Gilot’s work. She died last year at the ripe age of 101 and Paloma their daughter has a wonderful perfume that reminds me of winter. Oh and me? I got out of the Ad business years ago. My Picasso supports my writing, likes art museums because his mother taught him well and doesn’t ask me to call him sir.
