#Mentalblocks A true killer for any athlete. Slows progression. Instills fear, trepidation, self loathing. Kara had many mental blocks as a #gymnast. On every apparatus. But the one thing she could never do, and never had a coach willing to work with her on it until she got to @k2academyandk2campus , was the #standingbackhandspring. She was working on it and making progress before she quit gymnastics and she told her coaches at @wccacrotumb when she started. It’s a requirement for any acro team. I’ll admit I was worried her blocks would cause an issue and she may not enjoy it or even quit. But with the help of the coaches and the support of her teammates, she’s doing it. It’s not clean for sure. Her #ROBHS is way prettier than this, but I’m sure it will get better!! And to see her smiling at practice makes me so happy #wccproud #acrobaticsandtumbling
Technique evolves and I don’t always teach things the same way I did 20 years ago. Since I’m able to test these technical differences myself, there are a few big changes I’ve made in my own skills. One of these is the arm drop out of a roundoff or back handspring. If you learned “arms by ears” for the rebound of your RO or BHS, or if you teach it that way, it’s not necessarily wrong. BUT, I think a better way to finish these skills is using a forward or dropped arm position. This allows you to utilize your arm throw to make your BHS faster and more efficient! Playing around with this different arm position I could swear the dropped arms made me go faster! I put the videos side by side and was surprised to see that the dropped arms didn’t speed up the entire skill. 😂BUT, you can see how it helps open my shoulders (always a problem for me), which in turn puts me at a better angle for the repulsion phase. The more I talk about it, it becomes evident that consistency is far more than the KEY to success - it just might be its ONLY determining factor!!! There is great power in repetition. There are many people who are very successful in life, not because of where their talent has taken them, but simply because of their ability to be reliable in performing consistently and delivering the same results over and over again. They can be trusted to deliver and be the best at what they do without fail. And they got there by consistently practicing the techniques that would one day set them up for success. If you want to see success, you must be consistent! If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a MILLION times - consistency is KEY!!! Consistently seeking understanding; consistently working to improve; consistently tweaking your technique; and consistently putting in work!!! These things ONLY lead to one thing - RESULTS!!! It sucks, it’s hard, it’s a LONG JOURNEY, but the one thing that WON’T happen is you being WORSE OFF than how you started!!! The work will ONLY ever make you better!!!
