Moving slow on a Monday. But I like how this piece turned out after I stretched it.
I love to see what happens when I combine unlikely and really unfriendly texts. This is the first in some pieces taking pages from from a tiny old children's book entitled 'WAR' which are then immersed in transparent images of women in domestic settings from the past 100 years. I will never tire of looking at what we have fed to our children, our parents, our grandparents, as standards of how things should be. It can be so very hard to see the glaring issues today. But yesterday is jarring. We should learn from yesterday. I overlay my marks and letters, pushing back the past with letterpress type and antique Indian woodblock printing. I love the patterns, reminiscent of wallpapers and tablecloths. Concept and image drawn out of our collective past. The title is drawn from the text on the page and the incongruent meaning of the word pretty. Why are we drawn towards the things we are drawn towards? I've always had a leaning toward things which tell stories (usually sad, depressing stories with a chance of redemption thrown in there). Every time I see an old china teacup at the thrift I want it. Every time. I want to hold it and think about who owned it and what it heard over all those years of hospitality. What heartbreak and joy and disappointment and revelation were discussed over a simple cup of tea. I don't buy them... usually. But I still want to. New series of woodblock prints are up on my website! Each one is a monoprint, one of a kind, not an edition. So when they're gone, they're gone. A little bit about the Vessel Series: The Vessel Series is a collection of monoprints created from a library of woodblock and etching plates I created. Each print is different in it’s overlapping and combining of plates, as well as it’s colors and ink density. I love watching how the plates interact with one another and change as they are paired with different plates in different colors. Each print is a story that I am unfolding on my press.

Over the years I have had the privilege of speaking alongside some truly amazing human beings. @amyjuliabecker is one of them. We spoke together at an event called the Maker Series several years ago.
