Our Rule of Life identifies celebration as the “overflow of our joy to follow Christ,”… To overflow in joy is to abide in Christ, and to abide in Christ is, ultimately, to settle into the warmth of our own frailty. …to come to terms with limitation, to move past the denial of and bargaining with our weakness, to attain the acceptance of dustiness. This is not the abandonment of the pursuit of excellence, but a coming to terms with the inevitability of inadequacy. We cannot be other than human. We are not invited to be. We ought not hope to be. Rule of Life reflection - Trust Emily, Residential member If you ever take up surfing, the very first lesson you will be taught is to fail. Not stretches, or how to paddle, or stand, not even how to carry a bord on dry land-but the very first lesson is to fail. You see, sometimes, when you are surfing waves sneak up on you and will throw you into the water so hard that you will tumble so fast you are disoriented and you cannot tell which direction is the surface. And sometimes this happens so quickly you cannot prepare and you cannot take a breath beforehand. Leaving you submerged, disoriented and with no air in your lungs. You have 1 minute to find your next breath. //// The correct way to fail is to trust. (Chipper) Most people do not know, but even when you have no breath in your lungs the oxygen in your blood will pull you to the surface- naturally. But any movement will slow or stop this process. “To Be still and to know.” is one way to phrase it. The correct way to fail is to trust. And in a sense, in doing so you do not fail. Sometimes to Trust. We must be still-before we can move and this ables ourselves to keep moving long term. But to trust in God-is not to do nothing. It is not to be inactive. It is to be patient. We are called to be aware of a greater acting force and to work with the one who is moving for our personal and communal good. We move with a greater acting force. In similar ways, when we tumble in the water and wait, sometimes our back will hit the surface before our face- then we should move. Rule of Life reflection - Reconciliation Kelsey, Residential member In our rule, and in our Christian lives, we are called to be merciful and patient, to speak the truth in love and humility, and to ask forgiveness from God and each other. These are the actions of reconciliation. Simple! And yet, complex. How do we practice patience without it being completely passive? How do we speak the truth in love if we disagree so strongly? What about when our attempt at reconciliation fails? We seek to understand and yet are misunderstood. That’s why I tend to use my little rug. You know, the one you can sweep all your frustrations under? Now that is easy. Until it’s not… You know what happens to all that stuff piled under the rug? It rots. And one day you can’t ignore the smell and the giant mess. Reconciliation isn’t a rug to hide things under or a throne to sit and judge on. I’d like to think it’s a table. A place we can sit down together with vulnerability and grace. We will make mistakes- I make mistakes- and we will learn together. It is an invitation to know one another. In our community, we often find ourselves at a table full of joy, conversation, and laughter. But we also have to have the hard conversations, trusting that it comes from a place of love and care. Maybe we have to listen patiently or speak honestly. We give and receive forgiveness. We care for one another. We all have our sharp edges, our broken pieces, our differences that can be difficult to understand. And yet God has invited us all here to a table of reconciliation, and the fruit He gives us is healing and unity. Sometimes we make a mess of it; He can help us clean it up together. I still don’t like conflict and hard conversations. But I know that the process of reconciliation is not something to be avoided but embraced. Because the goal is loving one another, growing together, and walking in unity with Christ. #reconciliation #ruleoflife

Catechisms were ways in which the Church began teaching its members about the Scriptures and doctrine after the Protestant Reformation. It is usually a question and answer format followed by scripture references to meditate on. I’m curious: what makes your soul happy? We talked about a Rule of Life in a staff meeting recently, which got me thinking about my own. My “rule” includes plenty of spiritual disciplines I am drawn to. Some make sense as spiritual practices, and others may not (to you). But, indeed, anything can be a spiritual practice with our intention set on our Creator. And there are lots of things that make my soul happy! These days, I crave quiet on my yoga mat, being outside on my bike (come on, Spring), losing time with historical fiction, unwinding with soulful music, cuddling with our furry friend #PennelopeAnnePWD , sipping on hot tea and Crio Bru, letting my thoughts flow through my writing, exploring deep (and sound) theology in conversation, thrift shopping, wearing and (sometimes!) knitting with natural fibers, soaking up nature, and serving others by helping them feel closer to God. These are in no particular order and are not done all at once - ha! There’s not enough time in one day or week for all my happy soul habits. Plus, I also have to do important and good things not on my happy list - like laundry, dishes, and taxes, just like you. So tell me! Please?
