Note from Nick: What’s the best way to connect with real ceremonial cacao? Many people who have developed a connection with cacao made by indigenous artisans are seeking an answer to this question. It’s complicated, to say the least. It’s wonderful to learn about the history and traditions – both cultural and spiritual – surrounding cacao. But in most cases, someone would need to be born into a lineage of indigenous Cosmovision to really ethically embody it. Someone doesn’t get holier for going to spend time with indigenous teachers, for wearing traditional garments, or collecting ancient ceremonial tools. These CAN be a way to honor and pay respect to those teachers, if done with humility. Yet what’s even more important is acknowledgement – about where and how we got those ideas and objects, and about how that culture and upbringing is different from our own. The most common advice I’ve received from indigenous cacao teachers is to act with intention, and to make offerings to “spirit” (however we think of something bigger than ourselves), our ancestors, and the earth. Yet they’ve also said it’s okay to find our own way that feels authentic to connect with and share cacao. While there are very strongly held indigenous beliefs, there’s also usually a non-dogmatic flexibility for people to find their own path. And in the West it’s important to be mindful of surface appearances in spiritual circles, where dogmatism often shows up even in supposedly cutting-edge modalities. Someone can don the appearance of being spiritually evolved but still not be thinking about the safety of the container or about contributing to social justice for the harm that has been caused in places with a long history of sacred cacao use. Hallo dear Cacao Our first meeting with Ceremonial Cacao was on a trip to Bali in 2017. Here we got to taste a cup of ceremonial cacao on a cafe in Ubud. We got to feel the buzz of the Cacao and we felt instant in love 😜 But it was not until 2020, where we traveled through Mexico, we actually learned about the origin of Cacao and how the Aztecs and Mayans cultivated the cacao tree to first and foremost use it for religious ceremonies and later as a luxury drink mixed with spices. We were so blessed with living with a Mayan rooted family in the jungle, who presented us to their version of Cacao Ceremony presented for them by their ancestors through several generations. Our passion for Cacao expanded to a whole new level and when we later traveled to Ecuador, we got to learn about the indigenous Cacao that grows wild within the Jungle. We got to taste ceremonial grade cacao which was made from one of the oldest Criollo cacao beans. We got our hands on wild growing cacao trees and we knew instinctively, that this passion for Cacao would someday make us work with cacao and chocolate. How and when, we did not know at that point. Buenos días cacao lovers! As many of you know, at the start of the year I am living in the Amazon of Peru working with medicinal plants & international seekers who come for medicinal healing at @wearenovalis. During this time I am mostly offline (no service in the jungle) so my orders tend to go out a bit more slowly, so thank you to all who have continued to support Soul Melody Cacao and your graciousness with my spaciousness. 💕 This year was another transformational and inspiring chapter, it is never a dull moment living in the Amazon. I got to visit Jane' of course, the powerhouse and farmer of our special Peruvian cacao. This cacao you will find nowhere else. We had a chocolatier visit us this year who has been trying beans and cacao from all over the world for a long time, and when she tasted Jane's cacao, she declared it was like nothing she has had before. We have always known it was special, it spoke to me the first time I tasted it so many years ago, and this is how Soul Melody began. Due to the inflation of shipping prices out of Peru, we will have to shift our prices in order to continue to support this Peruvian medicine, and are navigating the best ways to make it possible and affordable for all. This is Daniel South, our dear friend and farmer since 2017. He grows a tiny, 2 hectare permaculture cacao farm in the lush, tropical rainforest on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica. His trees were planted in a biodiverse ecosystem among banana and papaya trees, and the only fertiliser used is compost from those trees that he spreads around the trunks of his cacao trees. Whereas many of the local indigenous tribes in the area that also grow cacao actually get their seedling from a government supported program that uses a new hybridized and disease resistant variety, Daniel's trees are of an heirloom Forastero type named Matina. He calls them "old beans" and he got his seedlings from friends and family deep in the jungle. We roast his beans not too light and not too dark giving them a deep, woody flavour but with subtle flowery notes of bergamotte. 🤤🤤 Then we gently grind the beans between granite stones until just perfectly smooth giving the final cacao our beloved silky texture.
