Note from Nick: Last week I visited Mexico City for the first time! 🇲🇽 What a powerful place. Not only is it one of the biggest cities in the world, but the area has a long history of cultural significance and influence in Mesoamerica. That was evident even just from visiting the National Museum of Anthropology. It’s like a city in itself, with different buildings housing items from different areas and epochs of what’s now Mexico. I got to see metate stones used for grinding corn, cacao, and other foods, that were dated to the Middle and Late “Preclassic” periods, so roughly 900 BC to 250 AD. I learned about ancient trade routes like in the diagram here from around 1,000 A.D., showing the passage of gemstones, pottery, and other goods between what’s now the American Southwest and Costa Rica! I visited @cacaoparatodos for a cup of pataxtle (a.k.a. pataxte or Theobroma bicolor), a cousin of cacao that’s more pungent and nutty. It was amazing to learn about Mexico’s craft chocolate industry, which has a heavy emphasis on transparency and traceability (thanks also to @larifachocolateria). I got a limpia (cleansing with incense, herbs, and sound) from Mexica dancers in the Zócalo. And I visited the small archaeology site of Texcotzingo, an ancient bathhouse with sophisticated aqueducts that was a place of retreat and meditation. Here I met with a local artisan who will be making molinillos (traditional wooden whisks) for Soul Lift Cacao very soon! I left an offering of ethical chocolate at an altar we found there. All in all it was a special trip that helped me to more deeply understand the historical context and culture behind cacao. I’m sure I’ll be back in Mexico City! The thought of having to wait a few minutes has us impatiently searching for something to do or to check our phones so that time isn’t wasted. Allow yourself just a few minutes each day to simply listen, to observe, to be in awe and appreciate the small things, to re-connect with our external environment and our inner selves. Mindfulness meditation doesn’t have to be 20 minutes of sitting cross legged on a cushion every day (although this is great). Dear Cacao Calling Family, - I hope you are all well 🤗 - A little update from me to you… - As some of you may already know, we are currently in a global cacao crisis where we are seeing a significant increase in the cost of ceremonial grade cacao. Sadly the situation has not shown any signs of improvement, which is now having a huge impact on many small cacao businesses 😔 - Unfortunately, the farmers in Peru and Ecuador where I source my ceremonial grade cacao from, have been severely impacted by climate change (El Nino) which has directly affected their cacao harvest making it difficult for them to supply the demand 🌱 😢 - This means there is a noticeable shortage of cacao beans, leading to market instability and making it difficult to maintain fixed prices going forward - With this in mind, I have taken some time to think about how I am going to navigate Cacao Calling around this current crisis so that we can still serve you all 🤎 - I take huge pride in where I source my cacao from and that will not waiver. However, given the scarcity and price surge of cacao, I will need to look at increasing my prices going forward - With the limited stock I am currently holding, my prices will remain the same. On ne parle pas assez de la mort dans nos sociétés modernes. C’est tabou, c’est mal vu, on sait pas comment faire, on ne sait pas comment s’y prendre… Si je prends l’exemple de l’accompagnement de la Creation et des grossesses, à peu près une femme sur quatre vit une fausse couche. Ce n’est pas partagé dans les échanges sociaux. D’ailleurs, on a pris l’habitude de ne pas annoncer la grossesse avant trois mois pour éviter la discussion qui peut mettre mal à l’aise, car tabou, de la fausse couche, de la perte . Cependant la mort fait partie de la vie, il n’y a aucune renaissance sans mort et quelque part la mort est toujours la naissance de quelque chose d’autre. Osons libérer la parole par rapport à ce sujet, s’entraider les uns les autres. peut-être alors que les femmes, les familles, le monde vivraient ces moments de transformation avec beaucoup plus d’aisance. On a rendu un processus naturel et douloureux par nature tabou et inaccessible , ainsi les personnes s’isolent et c’est meme pire ! Ces étapes de vies sont faites pour êtres soutenues par la communauté, êtres vécues par l’initiation, inspirer et élever par l’exemple. Qu’elle force d’avoir la capacité de traverser ces processus et d ‘être vivant. Ce sont des évènements qui nous rendent plus fort en tant que personne, en tant que famille, en tant que collectif vivant. Note from Nick: What’s the best way to connect with real ceremonial cacao? Many people who have developed a connection with cacao made by indigenous artisans are seeking an answer to this question. It’s complicated, to say the least. It’s wonderful to learn about the history and traditions – both cultural and spiritual – surrounding cacao. But in most cases, someone would need to be born into a lineage of indigenous Cosmovision to really ethically embody it. Someone doesn’t get holier for going to spend time with indigenous teachers, for wearing traditional garments, or collecting ancient ceremonial tools. These CAN be a way to honor and pay respect to those teachers, if done with humility. Yet what’s even more important is acknowledgement – about where and how we got those ideas and objects, and about how that culture and upbringing is different from our own. The most common advice I’ve received from indigenous cacao teachers is to act with intention, and to make offerings to “spirit” (however we think of something bigger than ourselves), our ancestors, and the earth. Yet they’ve also said it’s okay to find our own way that feels authentic to connect with and share cacao. While there are very strongly held indigenous beliefs, there’s also usually a non-dogmatic flexibility for people to find their own path. And in the West it’s important to be mindful of surface appearances in spiritual circles, where dogmatism often shows up even in supposedly cutting-edge modalities. Someone can don the appearance of being spiritually evolved but still not be thinking about the safety of the container or about contributing to social justice for the harm that has been caused in places with a long history of sacred cacao use.
