May 24: OUR LADY HELP OF CHRISTIANS In the second half of the sixteenth century, the power of the Turks had become so great that the peace of all Europe was threatened. St. Pius V, reigning Pontiff at the time, was famous for his Christian fortitude as well as his holy life. He caused the combined forces of Christendom to turn against the enemy. The Christians were inferior in numbers to the army of the Turks, but the former placed its trust in the help of the Blessed Virgin. The enemy was routed, while the Holy Father knelt before a picture of our Blessed Lady; suddenly Mary appeared and told him in that very hour the enemy had been defeated. St. Pius ordained that the invocation “Help of Christians” be added to the Litany of Loreto. Some years later Napoleon I, for five years confined Pope Pius VII in prison, to the great sorrow of the entire Church. Our Lady once more came to the aid of her faithful children; the Emperor was forced to abdicate and the Holy Father returned to Rome. During the Paschal service the sermon that is read for the faithful was written by St. John Chrysostom and gives amazing truth that is embedded in all aspects of our liturgical life. We are all, first and last, able to receive the bountiful blessing of salvation. We are all offered seats at the table. I was always a bit surprised by this idea. Whether someone is a devout Christian their whole life, or falls on their knees in repentance at the moment of death, the table is fully laden and the feast is prepared for all! It’s easy to feel like any of us might be better than someone who does less… but the 40 day fast is the example we look to in relation to salvation. Whether someone has disregarded the fast, or fully committed themselves with mind, body and soul, each has the opportunity to rejoice on this high feast day and celebrate together. An excerpt from St. John Chrysostom’s sermon: “And He shows mercy upon the last, and cares for the first; and to the one He gives, and upon the other He bestows gifts. And He both accepts the deeds, and welcomes the intention, and honors the acts and praises the offering. Wherefore, enter you all into the joy of your Lord; and receive your reward, both the first, and likewise the second. You rich and poor together, hold high festival. You sober and you heedless, honor the day. Rejoice today, both you who have fasted and you who have disregarded the fast. The table is full-laden; feast ye all sumptuously. С ПРАЗДНИКОМ! 🌸💝🌼🦋🌷💐 9 февраля празднуется перенесение мощей святителя Иоанна Златоуста 🕊❤️ Святитель Иоанн Златоуст - великий вселенский учитель и иерарх, скончался в 407 году в городе Команы на пути к месту ссылки, осужденный по проискам императрицы Евдоксии за смелое обличение пороков, царивших в Константинополе. Перенесение его честны’х мощей из Коман в Константинополь совершилось в 438 году, через 30 лет после смерти святителя, при сыне Евдоксии императоре Феодосии II (408-450). Святитель Иоанн Златоуст пользовался горячей любовью и глубоким уважением народа, и скорбь о его безвременной кончине жила в сердцах христиан. Ученик святителя Иоанна, святой Прокл, Патриарх Константинопольский (434-447), совершая Богослужение в храме Святой Софии, произнес проповедь, в которой, прославляя святителя Иоанна, говорил: «О Иоанн! Жизнь твоя многотрудна, но смерть славна, гроб твой блажен и воздаяние обильно по благодати и милосердию Господа нашего Иисуса Христа. О благодать, препобеждающая пределы, место и время! Место препобедила любовь, предел уничтожила незабвенная память, и местом не ограничились чудеса святителя». Присутствовавшие в храме, глубоко тронутые словом святителя Прокла, не дали даже ему окончить проповедь и стали единодушно умолять Патриарха ходатайствовать перед императором, чтобы мощи святителя Иоанна были перенесены в Константинополь. Император, убежденный святителем Проклом, дал согласие и повелел перенести мощи святителя Иоанна, но посланные им люди никак не могли поднять святые мощи до тех пор, пока император, поняв свою ошибку, не прислал послание к святителю Иоанну, смиренно прося у него прощения за себя и за свою мать Евдоксию. Послание зачитали у гроба святителя Иоанна и после этого легко подняли мощи, внесли их на корабль и доставили в Константинополь. Рака с мощами была поставлена в церкви святой мученицы Ирины. Патриарх открыл гроб: тело святителя Иоанна оказалось нетленным. Царь, припав к гробу со слезами, просил прощения. Народ весь день и ночь не отходил от раки. Наутро рака с мощами святителя была перенесена в церковь святых Апостолов. Народ воскликнул: «Приими престол твой, отче!» ⤵️

What is a relic? In both the Orthodox and Catholic traditions, relics are both the mortal remains of a departed saint and something personal that may have belonged to a saint, whether it be clothes, jewelry, etc. A relic can also be any item that was used to torture or kill one of the saints. The items involved in the Passion of the Christ, such as the Cross or the Shroud of Turin, are also considered to be holy relics. These items are often associated with healing the sick or other miracles that happen when believers are nearby, venerating the relics. The incorrupted body of Saint John Chrysostom and the Chains of Saint Peter are two examples that we have mentioned here at the Blessed Rose. When a relic is “translated”, it simply means that it is moved from one place to another. Why are these items venerated? In Orthodoxy, we believe that once the body becomes a temple for the Holy Spirit, there is no force, not even death, that can force the Spirit to leave the body. The Saints and Martyrs were all devout followers of Christ, and all made homes for the Spirit within themselves. It is believed that because the Spirit worked through them in life, the Spirit continues to work in them after death. Pictured are relics of the Theotokos, Saint Demetrios, and Saint John Chrysostom, as well as the Shroud of Turin. Today, January 27, we celebrate the translation of Saint John Chrysostom’s relics into the Church of the Holy Apostles in Constantinople. Saint John Chrysostom (c. 347-407), was one of our most important and influential Early Church Fathers. Along with Saint Basil the Great and Saint Gregory the Theologian, he is seen as one of the Three Holy Hierarchs by both Orthodox Christians and Roman Catholics. Eastern Orthodox and Eastern Catholics often use the Divine Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom as the main liturgy during their services. The saint was a prolific writer, leaving behind over 700 sermons, 246 letters, and many, many more writings. In the year 438, thirty years after the saint’s death, his relics would be translated to Constantinople. During this time the emperor was Saint Theodosius II, the son of Emperor Arcadius and Empress Eudoxia who had been responsible for his exile. When it came time for the relics to be physically relocated, the coffin simply would not move. It was as if the Saint were cementing himself where he were, refusing to move. Hearing this news, Theodosius wrote a letter to Saint John Chrysostom, asking forgiveness for how his mother and father had persecuted him. Once the letter was laid upon the tomb, the relics moved with ease. When the relics arrived at the Hagia Eirene, or the Church of Holy Peace, Saint John’s body was discovered to be incorrupt. This means that his body had not decayed at all in the 30 years since his death – a miracle, indeed.
