Today is the 150th Anniversary of The Pratulin Martyrs of Poland. When the Russian State liquidated their Eastern Catholic Diocese (Chelm), they were given the "choice" to become Russian Orthodox or flee their territory to become Roman rite. They chose neither, but were shot by Tsarist troops during their protest at the doors of their church. Their names are: Wincenty Lewoniuk Daniel Karmasz Lukasz Bojko Konstanty Bojko Anicet Hryciuk Filip Geryluk Onufry Wasyluk Bartlomiej Osypiuk Ignacy Franczuk Jan Andrzejuk Konstanty Lukaszuk Maksym Hawryluk Michal Wawryszuk In these forced conversions throughout eastern Poland, a total of 600 faithful were deported to Siberia, and 108 lost their lives. 66 native Chełm priests who refused to convert to Orthodoxy fled to Galicia, 74 were exiled to Siberia or imprisoned, and 7 died as martyrs. As it happens, following the religious toleration decree during the Russian Revolution of 1905 which finally allowed Orthodox Christians to legally convert to other religions, 170,000 out of the 450,000 Orthodox in the former Chełm Eparchy had returned to Catholicism by 1908. Glory to the Martyrs! Pray for us!

Today we pay tribute to a late, great spiritual leader of the Carpatho-Rusyn Greek Catholic Archeparchy of Pittsburgh, Archpriest John Petro ( 1942-2022) shown here preaching in his last parish assignment, Saint Stephen the Protomartyr Church, North Huntington, Irwin, Pennsylvania, circa 2013. A vocation from Saint Michael the Archangel Church, Canonsburg, Pennsylvania his first pastorate was Saint Nicholas of Myra in Nanty Glo, Pennsylvania. Graduate Studies were in Louvain, Belgium where he assisted in the Russian Greek Catholic Liturgical life there. He was the Chaplain for the Sisters of Saint Basil the Great in Uniontown where he led the gargantuan task of translating the Divine Office of Vespers, Matins, etc from Greek/ Church Slavonic into English and is still used as the standard to this day in parish life as well. He was rector of the Byzantine Catholic Seminary in Pittsburgh where he was instrumental in obtaining its much needed Accreditation. Father John led hundreds of retreats, days of renewal and such that inspired young and old with a Gospel call to metanoia, reforming of life and turning to the Lord Jesus in the Byzantine Spiritual Tradition of his Eastern Church's Mothers and Fathers. XVII Januarii ~ S. Antonii Deserti [Reading]: The 1908 Roman Breviary [Troparion]: You equaled Elijah in his zeal and followed the straight path of the Baptist. You peopled the wilderness and, by your prayers, established the world on firm foundations. O Father Anthony, intercede with Christ God to save our souls. "If you cannot find Christ in the beggar at the church door, you will not find Him in the chalice." -St.John Chrysostom This is something St.John Chrysostom once said. For me, the truth of this statement is hard to deny. It points to the root of Jesus’ message. Jesus calls us to love the least of these. Who is that “least brother?” It’s interesting that Jesus specifically points to the person considered the least, as opposed to a more general statement that includes all people. Why not say, “Whatever you do to others…?” This would include all whom we serve. But instead Jesus pointed to the least brother. Perhaps this should be seen, especially, as the most sinful person, the weakest, the most gravely ill, the incapacitated, the homeless, the hungry and the homeless, and all those who have pronounced needs in this life. The most beautiful and touching part about this statement is that Jesus identifies Himself with the person in need, the “least” of all. By serving those in special need, we are serving Jesus. But for Him to be able to say that, He has to be intimately united with these people. And by showing such an intimate connection to them, Jesus reveals their infinite dignity as persons. St.John Chrysostom also reminds us that not only is God in the presence of the beggar and the person who has nothing, you won't find him present in chalice with the Eucharist. Jesus comes to us every Sunday during Holy Mass, Divine Liturgy, etc in the form of bread and wine, which is His body and blood. Every human both man and woman, are created in God's image (Genesis 1:26-27). Even the least of humans. If we cannot acknowledge God's image in them, how will you see God in the bread and wine every Sunday?

September 13 is the feast of Saint John Chrysostom, “Doctor of the Eucharist”: Antiochian-Greek nobleman, ascetic, hermit, philosopher, theologian, mystic, orator, ninth Metropolitan Archbishop of Constantinople, reformer, and liturgist—who died in exile on this day in 407. The ambiguity and intrigue surrounding John, the great preacher (his name means “golden-mouthed”) from Antioch, are characteristic of the life of any great man in a capital city. Brought to Constantinople after a dozen years of priestly service in Syria, John found himself the reluctant victim of an imperial ruse to make him bishop in the greatest city of the empire. Ascetic, unimposing but dignified, and troubled by stomach ailments from his desert days as a monk, John became a bishop under the cloud of imperial politics. If his body was weak, his tongue was powerful. The content of his sermons, his exegesis of Scripture, were never without a point. Sometimes the point stung the high and mighty. Some sermons lasted up to two hours. His lifestyle at the imperial court was not appreciated by many courtiers. He offered a modest table to episcopal sycophants hanging around for imperial and ecclesiastical favors. John deplored the court protocol that accorded him precedence before the highest state officials. He would not be a kept man. His zeal led him to decisive action. Bishops who bribed their way into office were deposed. Many of his sermons called for concrete steps to share wealth with the poor. The rich did not appreciate hearing from John that private property existed because of Adam’s fall from grace any more than married men liked to hear that they were bound to marital fidelity just as much as their wives were. When it came to justice and charity, John acknowledged no double standards. Aloof, energetic, outspoken, especially when he became excited in the pulpit, John was a sure target for criticism and personal trouble. He was accused of gorging himself secretly on rich wines and fine foods. His faithfulness as spiritual director to the rich widow, Olympia, provoked much gossip attempting to prove him a hypocrite where wealth and chastity were concerned. (Read more below)

Today is August 21, the feast day of Blessed Symeon Lukach. Greek Catholic. Born to a farm family. Entered the seminary in 1913; his studies were interrupted by World War I, but he graduated in and was ordained in 1919. Taught moral theology at the seminary in Ivano-Franksivsk. Believed to have been secretly ordained a bishop in April 1945; the secrecy was necessitated by Soviet persecution of the Church. Arrested for his faith by Soviet secret police on 26 October 1949; held until 11 February 1955. Worked as a covert priest after his release. Imprisoned again in July 1962. Contracted tuberculosis and died in prison.
