It is one thing to visit plantations of the U.S. south, it is another to see the horrors that were the beginning of the voyage of the enslaved to a land faraway. I had read and seen photos of the ‘Door of No Return’ but to see it in the context of the dungeons that more than 30,000 people a year were held in conditions that are akin to animal pens is truly indescribable. Women were chosen as concubines by their captors during the 2-3 months of being held before being boarded onto ships. Those who became pregnant were allowed to stay in the dungeon, give birth, nurse for a short time before the child was taken back to villagers and the mother sent to a slave market across the Atlantic. 2024 VS 1999 London, England I always was a dreamer and doer as a kid. Raised by a fearless and dedicated single mother and the Greatest & most beautiful Grandparents a girl could have ever dreamed of. “When I grow up I am going to travel the world” I said to my mother in high school when we couldn’t afford to send me to Disney World. Here I am 40 plus countries and 6/7 continents. My first international trip was to Amsterdam, Netherlands in March of 1999. CHINCHERO, PERU There are so many impressive ruins and historic sites to visit throughout the Sacred Valley, that we rented a car to take them in at a pace all our own. A pace unlike the frenzy of tourbus bursting with travelers who want to be first. Not rushing from one site to another meant we got to sit down in the remote town of Chinchero and watch the Peruvian world go by. We saw champagne bottles waiting to be popped and pastel-colored confetti wedged in cobblestone walkways. The mariachi band proudly posting for photos - signs of a wedding we heard about, but didn’t see. Kids wrestling on the expanse of lawn between the church whose insides tourists aren’t allowed to photograph and row of local women who only untuck their heads from a massive umbrella to sell all manner of alpaca-themed hats and toys. The kids happily pause their flying leg kicks to let a morena take their picture. Then they’re back to poking each other with sticks and gleefully slapping each other with a lost pink Croc. WWP. We munched soup and flavored cubes of alpaca meat at a the Restaurante Merienda with the still serenity of the farms and valley outside the window. With all the culinary options in Cusco; this intimate, interactive experience with @peruviancuscoflavors felt like the most culturally immersive meal I’ve had in Peru. Chef Jesus was educational, patient, funny and created a menu that was both flavorful and beautiful. We started at the huge San Pedro Market to get fresh ingredients for our cocktails and traditional dishes - causa, quinoa tamales, ceviche, and a street dessert. Over 4,000 native potatoes grow in Peru so we deep dived into (some) of the different types and how they’re served. Then we marched like baby ducks to his beautiful kitchen where we put on our aprons and got to cooking and making our own pisco cocktails. Chef Jesus adapted dishes to my gluten-free restrictions as well as a vegetarian and pescatarian in the group. He shared with us the “why” behind when to add salt when cooking, gave us a crash course on knife skills, and did it all with some kick ass 80’s music in the background, the perfect atmosphere for fun. Phi Phi Islands!!! Word of advice, take a sunrise tour. There were no crowds and you really get to enjoy the Islands in peace!!! I wish I could have captured the beauty the way it deserved. It truly was amazing! The ride from Phuket was a little rough so if you develop motion sickness be prepared. You can also opt for a private tour which allows for a more flexible itinerary. In my honest opinion, Maya Bay was gorgeous, but I would have been okay seeing it from the water on the boat. You are not allowed to swim on the beach (over tourism greatly harmed the coral reefs). So make sure you consider that when choosing the tour that fits your interests. There are two great things you can give your children: roots and wings. Create a space that they can always call home, but encourage a spirit of independence and curiosity, which allows them to go out into the world without needing you 24/7, and that allows for you to have a life of your own once you become an empty nester. My oldest son shared these pics from his most recent travels to Amsterdam. As a parent, one of my goals was to inspire my children to #seesomeworld. It warms my heart to experience places that I have never visited, vicariously through their travels. "There is life outside of the 50 states," I would tell them both when they were younger. In college, I had a goal of visiting 30 states by 30, and I was thrilled to have exceeded that goal by two. Being well-traveled offers numerous benefits, such as broadening your perspective, fostering cultural understanding, enhancing adaptability, boosting confidence, and creating lasting memories. Additionally, exposure to diverse people and situations can lead to personal growth, increased creativity, and improved problem-solving skills. As a human resources executive in my former corporate life, these attributes occasionally were deciding factors when faced with choosing between two otherwise equally qualified candidates.
