Rio celebrated his one-year anniversary yesterday in our care. While we love him deeply, a shelter is not a permanent home. He deserves a family to call his own and this 6-year-old good boy with soulful brown eyes truly desires a loyal friend, stability, and structure to bring out the best in him. Rio exudes a zest for life that is simply contagious. His lively antics are guaranteed to keep you entertained and on your toes. He will play fetch and return the ball each time. He loves squeaky toys but doesn't usually destroy them. Eager to please, and quick to learn, Rio has learned quite a bit in his time at HHS. He knows 'sit,' 'stay,' 'come,' and has recently mastered 'roll-over.' He is completely housebroken and would prefer to be the only pet in the home and would do best with older respectful children. If you're searching for a dog that brings an abundance of energy, playfulness, and a zest for life, look no further than Rio. His future adopter will need to stock up on squeaky toys and soft blankets because although he may be a big boy, inside he's just a big baby! Yesterday we had a very special pawty with doggie cake and ice cream. As wonderful as it was, it was also bittersweet. Rosie the Roveting's sweet foster family explained it best: Not the kind of celebration we were hoping for, but today we recognize Rosie’s 1 year Shelterversary. If we’re celebrating anything… we are celebrating her perseverance in surviving a 6 year hoarding situation. We are celebrating not letting only have one eye slow her down. We are celebrating the growth she’s made with her confidence. We are celebrating her acceptance of her foster brother Norm. We are celebrating her learning to walk on a leash. We are celebrating how good she is with cats! Most importantly, we are celebrating how cute she looks in that crown! It's our anniversary! While the Calaveras Humane Society has been actively helping pets and people since 1978, we opened our first standalone adoption center in Angels Camp on this date in 2019. In those four years, we have placed 1,782 dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens (plus a couple chinchillas and bunnies once) into loving new homes. One year ago today this scared, severely malnourished kitty walked up to an employee in our back field, begging for help!! We brought him in, fattened him up, got to know his quirky personality and fell in love with him!! Chee-Chee is a bit shy at first, but once he gets to know you, he will greet you with the cutest meows and hugs!! 😻 He enjoys scratching his cardboard couch as well as lounging in it, playing with feather wands, comfy beds, temptation treats and catnip!! 🌱 This sweet (neutered) boy is approximately 4 years old, up to date on all of his vaccines, microchipped and sooo ready for his furrrever home!! 🏡 Do you have room in your heart for this handsome, sophisticated kitty?? We got really delicious takeout from @perlewinebaroakland: Mushroom soup, spring salad, fried oyster deviled eggs, charcuterie board, and wagyu onglette steak. Yes we over ordered. No regrets.
Why a special dinner? Yesterday was the six week anniversary of my leaving all my in-person classes in favor of sheltering for our safety. My wife had read about folks finding ways to bring joy into this scary time. People up dressing up fancy, having scavenger hunts, a holiday meal, etc. She has only left the house once in these past weeks because my immune system is a bit stronger and she works, she already was a remote worker. Since she knew I needed to visit the Japanese market for a few of our staples (Japanese brown rice, brown rice vinegar, tofu, and locally made white miso), she asked if I’d make Chirashi (essentially a sushi bowl) for us for a special dinner. I also was delighted to find black soybean crackers we can share. I don’t eat animal products and my wife can’t eat gluten, this is a find! Fresh fried tofu, plus fresh firm tofu Fromm local shop that’s been in business for generations! Fresh shiso and a year for me, musubi with umeboshi (rice break with pickled plum inside! My wife had fresh tuna and salmon for her bowl. I had seared fried tofu and avocado in mine.
