Ciara came to us with what our veterinarian guesses was eye trauma; we had to have her right eye removed. "Rented the cabins for our annual snow trip. Great location close to skiing and sledding. However, the real gem was the beautiful property, great amenities, and accommodating hosts. It was clean, tastefully decorated. We had a great time! . This place was big enough for 13 of us - 9 adults and 4 kids. Having two cabins was great for that and it was a short walk between the two. There was something for everyone! They had a pack and play and high chair for the baby, lots of books, movies and games for the kiddos, comfy beds for all. . The game room was a wonderful distraction for the kids. There were sleds and other snow things. The espresso machine and hot tub was a hit for the adults. Big thanks to our hosts Chelsea and Bobby. They were great communicators - from extending our stay to letting us know where the coffee filters were. We’ll definitely be back!" . . Teeny-tiny Dex (just 5.5 pounds!) is a Chihuahua through and through. For the ardent Chi lover, he’s a dream. Dex is simultaneously nervous and completely full of himself (quite a feat!). He adores being carried around, he thinks he weighs 100 pounds when he meets other dogs, and he attaches himself to one person and will bond like glue to them, and (possibly) only them. Dex is about two years old. The ideal home for Dex will have someone who’s around a lot (he sometimes cries when left alone), and he likely would not be a good choice for a household with young kiddos. He hasn’t been nippy with us, but we could easily picture him protecting “his” person’s lap once he’s settled. Dex will make an excellent companion for anyone who understands the Chihuahua personality and doesn’t expect him to be lovey-dovey with strangers. He won’t be. In fact, he’s going to bark at them and make them question why you are sharing your home with Satan’s own dog. But for his special person, he’ll be the BFF you never knew you were missing, and he’s an utter delight. The guitar in this photo was originally played at Calaveras high school by students taking music courses, and once it was played to the point of no return, it was donated, then decorated by Holly Heath, and then sold in order to raise funds to go back into the music program at Calaveras High School. Not only is art invaluable, but it can be created from what others consider to be junk. By reusing or repurposing, we are able to bring life to things that would otherwise be polluting our environment. This case of absolutely perfect timing just warmed our hearts. We received a call yesterday from a pet owner in Glencoe whose cat gave birth to four kittens: two stillborn and two who died just a short time later. She was wondering if we had any newborn kittens who needed a mom, because her cat was very depressed and was looking all over the house for her babies. Quite literally a few minutes later, we received an urgent “rescue needed” alert from Stanislaus Animal Services Agency @stanislausanimalservices for a transfer partner to take six just-born but sadly orphaned kittens. It’s not always guaranteed that a mama cat will accept kittens who aren’t her own, but we thought it was worth a shot. Our Animal Care Manager made the drive to Modesto Thursday afternoon and retrieved the kittens, and the local resident with the very sad mama cat came to our center and picked them up right away. (We had a “bottle baby” foster home on standby in case the introduction didn’t go well.) We are delighted to report that the mama cat accepted the babies immediately, grooming them from nose to nail and getting them all settled in and nursing. We’ve included a short video the mama cat’s owner sent us. Carol Goff is a local artist who enjoys the challenges of working in both watercolors and oils. She lets her subjects dictate which medium to use. Watercolors provide a more fluid aspect, while oils can achieve more textural finishes. Her favorite subjects are taken from what grows in her gardens or scenery from the beautiful surrounding area of the Sierra Nevada Foothills. Artist Carol Goff will be exhibiting artwork at the Arts of Bear Valley Window Gallery at Meadowmont Shopping Center in Arnold. If we had to guess, we’d say she’s the super-jumbo extra-chonkin variety of pug (mix). Sixty pounds of ridiculous sunshine and cuddles, complete with curly pug tail and gorgeous markings. Mrs. Potts enjoys other dogs and has been terrific with our shelter mascot, Bubba the cat. She’s delightfully quiet when in her suite, which she has been keeping perfectly clean (so she might be housetrained, though we cannot guarantee). This extra-thicc pug-somethin’ is happy, friendly and intermittently playful (also loves a good Netflix and chill session). She should fit beautifully into a wide variety of home environments. Mrs. Potts could benefit greatly from a sensible weight-loss regimen and we will encourage her new person or family to help her lose a few pounds.
