As a singing teacher, I spend a reasonable amount of time talking about the perils of too much and too little mucus (not as gross as it sounds, trust me). It is currently autumn in Canberra, so the mucosal conversation has once again turned to hay fever. Hay fever is a common term used for allergic rhinitis, an allergic condition which irritates the upper respiratory tract, including eyes, sinuses, nose, throat and sometimes lungs. We usually think of it as being seasonal in the case of grasses and pollens, however perennial hay fever may be triggered by environmental factors like dust or animals. It is probably the most interfering allergic reaction to plague singers. In fact, I would rank it in the top 5 problematic upper respiratory tract conditions to impact singers, sharing prime position alongside asthma and the common cold. However, it is only one type of allergy that can affect the vocal instrument. So, if you are a sufferer, understanding your own allergies and their treatment is a must in order to develop as a singer. What’s a good practice routine for practicing piano? In a nutshell, the practise routine I give to my piano students goes like this: Start by playing warm-up exercises like scales and arpeggios to improve finger dexterity and technique. Then, focus on specific pieces or sections of pieces you’re learning, breaking them down into smaller parts and practicing them slowly and accurately. Incorporate sight-reading and chord exercises to further develop your skills. End your session with a piece you enjoy playing for fun or relaxation. Exercises to try – Five Tone Descending Exercise This exercise is an excellent exercise to add to your vocal warmup. It is great exercise to develop a relaxed instrument, focus on constant airflow, and practise the correct placement. The exercise is simple. You sing the descending pattern on an “Ah” vowel. Remember to only do this exercise in a comfortable range. After you have completed the exercise on one note you can move down in a comfortable range, lowering one half tone every time. Well, the mistake she's making is one that most singers make...Here it is: She's reaching with her chin to sing a higher note or initiate a belt. "What's wrong with that?", you may ask. "I've seem plenty of really successful singers do exactly that move." Exactly! But it's BAD technique! Moving your chin up while singing creates stress, tension right in your voice box (or larynx) making singing higher notes and/or belting more difficult to pull off. That constriction results in diminished tone and also vocal stress. If you're not careful, it leads to vocal injury. I know You want to avoid this. So test yourself! Sing a song. Be aware of your chin while you're navigating the various musical phrases and notes. Did your chin quickly shift up? Or did it gradually migrate up? If so, sing that song again and this time...consciously keep your chin level. Notice that hitting that high note or letting that belt rip is soooo much easier and also Sounds Sooo Much Better! I believe that adduction exercises are a common missing ingredient in vocal rehab and voice therapy protocols. Yes, I know this is a strong statement but in my experience as a highly specialized voice and singing voice clinician - a true one! Many other therapy strategies and techniques fall short and aren’t very successful if adduction patterns are not adequate. I'm doing some research for an article and came across this Arabic saying - what do you think? "She that knows not, and knows not that she knows not is a fool; shun her. She that knows not, and knows that she knows not is a learner; teach her. She that knows, and knows not that she knows is asleep; wake her. She that knows, and knows that she knows is a teacher; learn from her." The first sentence sounds quite old fashioned from a modern educational viewpoint, especially in the light of the work of Noel Burch on competencies and the conscious-unconscious model - don't you think? I'd also caution teachers on stage four, because this could lead to complacency. It's never a done deal. There are always things we can know more about. Can you guess which musical I went to see at the beautiful Liverpool Empire Theatre? 🎭 **Everybody’s Talking About Jamie** 🎶 The show, with music by Dan Gillespie-Sells and lyrics / books by Tom MacRae was an emotional, thought provoking, heart-breaking, amusing & ultimately uplifting romp through Jamie’s school days and premiere performance as drag queen, Mimi Me. 🎤 However, it was the vocal performances that I enjoyed most. As you would expect, the small cast had impressive selection of musical theatre voices, but we were also wowed by some seriously good soul and rock qualities amongst the principles. All of the principal performers were so good, it would be unfair to single anyone out. 💃 A delightful surprise came from a grey-wigged Kevin Clifton, playing the part of Hugo / Loco Chanelle. We all know he’s a crackin’ dancer 🪩 but, my goodness, he can really, REALLY sing!
