Where better to start our tour of Sledmere House than in it’s beautiful Entrance Hall, here’s my favourite photos to accompany my previous reel. . On the 23rd May 1911, a fire destroyed Sledmere House, leaving only the outer walls, the house was reconstructed between 1913-1918, and this particular room was designed by local architect Walter Brierley, it’s the only room that has a more Baroque feel, rather than Georgian. . The muskets you see date from the Napoleonic Wars, the splendid life size marble group of Laocoon and his sons, is eighteenth century and originally came from @gosfieldhallweddingvenue. The marble columns either side, once formed part of Grinling Gibbons altarpiece, made in 1685, for the Chapel of Whitehall Palace. . The beautiful bureau plat in the centre of the room originally came from @powerscourt_estate. . The French chandeliers came from the once splendid Grand Hotel in Scarborough, and above the fireplaces are meteorological instruments. . The displays are still looking great, although the bedding’s not as strong as usual due to lack of opportunities to feed over the last couple of months, so when the tulips finish I’ll have to see how good they look. Everything is bursting into life after all the wet weather and there is plenty to see in the Walled Garden! Even before they flower, the roses look fantastic, trained along ropes, up structures and in the borders looking sculptural with their arching stems pegged down to the ground. The fruit trees in the ornamental fruit garden are just beginning to blossom & the team have been building hazel supports to grow sweet peas up and support climbing veg in the potager. Sledmere House and Gardens 🌺🌸🌷 What a truly beautiful place, why I waited so long to visit here I'll never know! Set in a park designed by Capability Brown, the grounds are truly stunning. The walled garden is a joy. Even this early on into spring, it's still a pretty place for a wander. Our lovely Mumbler reviewer headed over to Sledmere with her 4 year old and baby to do their Easter activities, which are running during the school holiday. Here’s how she got on.... The weather wasn’t the best when we visited Sledmere but getting to hold fluffy chicks, meet a cheeky Shetland pony and some tiny spotted piglets definitely made up for it! We did the Easter Egg-splorer trail, which involved looking for the hidden painted eggs around the Stables and Rare Breed Farm Park, and my 4-year old loved exploring the huge grounds. We also played hide-and-seek around the sculpted bushes and spent ages in the adventure playground, which has a speedy zip wire and lots of great stuff to climb. We treated ourselves to sausage rolls from the deli shop and headed back home feeling full of fresh air - a drizzly morning well spent! ‘Boxing Hares and other Sledmere Animals’ an exhibition of photos by Elise Thomas. 📸 Thank you to Elise’s family for inviting me to see this evening’s preview of this talented young lady’s work. Elise sadly passed away last summer after being involved in a car crash. She was just 17. Elise only begun her photography in lockdown a few years earlier, photographing the beautiful array of wildlife on her doorstep in and around Sledmere. She even won the 12-15 category in the RSPCA Young Photographer of the Year Awards in 2021. I followed Elise since she started and was blown away by her work, and knocked sideways when I found out just how young she was. I have so much respect and love for her work as a fellow creative and wildlife enthusiast. This exhibition put together by the Sykes family, Sledmere and Elise’s loved ones is now on until Friday 26th April. It’s taking place in the Courtyard Room (above the cafe area) at @sledmere_house. Prints are available to purchase and order. All the money raised is going to support local young photographers and their future careers in memory of Elise and her passion. Please go and visit if you can, you will not be disappointed. It’s one thing to see her work on a screen, another to see the pieces blown up to life size and bigger and beautifully framed and presented. In the Walled Garden, the team have been busy cutting back, weeding and mulching some of the borders. As the soil has been so wet, they’ve been working off boards to avoid compaction. A local place to visit when at the Caravan: Sledmere House is steeped in history and full of stories, full of unique collections of artwork, furniture and antiques. In 1911 the House was gutted by a disastrous fire but the family never hesitated over the decision to rebuild and restore it. The 18th Century Walled Garden is renowned for its seasonal interest and inspired planting. The extensive grounds are the perfect place to enjoy a long walk or a peaceful stroll taking in the spectacular scenery. Our newly enlarged Coach House Café aims to offer the best of Yorkshire’s finest food and drink, including cream teas, farm house breakfasts and seasonal specials, all homemade using fresh, local produce. The Gardens Team have been using a mobile elevated platform to help them to undertake some much-needed yew tree pruning in Vicar’s Walk. Over the years some of the branches had started to overhang the area, blocking out sunlight for the trees in the Walk and causing some of them to lean as they searched for the light. The team worked carefully to remove a lot of branches and open up the area, whilst not leaving obvious gaps which spoil the view of the beautiful yews from the Walled Garden.
