Bradford Cathedral, 1919 For many centuries, the building now known as Bradford Cathedral, and formally Bradford Parish Church, has stood on the hillside above the “broad ford” that gave Bradford its name. The site itself has been a place of Christian worship for nearly 1400 years, with the current church believed to be the third church in this location. Bradford Parish Church became a Cathedral in 1919, with the Bishop’s Throne- the “Cathedra”, which comes from a Latin word meaning “chair”- given by the people of Ripon diocese, from which the new diocese of Bradford was created. Plans were then made for major extensions to the building, but these were delayed by the outbreak of war. Bradford Cathedral continues to serve its flourishing congregation and to welcome visitors of all faiths and none to this hidden treasure at the heart of a busy, vibrant and growing city. The Parish Room has recently been refurbished and renamed as the de Lacy Centre, providing more room and facilities for groups who wish to meet on this site. Day 3 of our hols and today we visited Bolton Abbey. It dates back to the 12th century and parts are still in use today. Additionally, there are leisurely strolls alongside the River Wharfe which include the Strid, a natural wonder, where the river suddenly narrows forcing the water through at great pressure. I’ve had a great day out in the North York Moors today on a 16 mile hike from Levisham to Goathland via Skelton Tower, Newtondale and Fen Bog. After the wet weather of yesterday it was nice to have a bit of sun at last today. I took the first train out of Pickering to Levisham before setting out on my walk. I saw many Stonechats flitting about as I made my way down to Newtondale where I watched a train go by as I crossed the track. I then climbed up to the moor and once at the cairn on Simon Howe Rigg I went right on the Lyke Wake walk path to cross Fen Bog and head up to the road. Once at the main road I followed it round left to turn left onto the road leading to Goathland. I did a bit of transpotting again a bit further on before joining a track that came out opposite Scripps garage. Whilst on this path there were many new lambs roaming around and I encountered one that had got out of a field and couldn’t get back in. It had managed to get itself wedged between a tree and wire fence as it tried to get back to Mum so I managed to get hold of it, released it and put it back into the field over the gate where it went straight for a drink and some TLC. I think Mum was grateful! I also saw some Lapwings flying about which was great to see. Whitby Goth Weekend was founded in 1994 by Jo Hampshire and has grown to become one of the world’s premier Goth events. This weekend, the festival was celebrating 30 years of its existence. It attracts visitors from all over the world who come to Whitby to celebrate, show off, people watch, shop, enjoy the entertainment, and generally have a good time. The atmosphere is joyous, the costumes and makeup are stunning (and often outrageous!), and the people are all so friendly. Colin has a question: Does the colour of rosé wine indicate how dry it will be…? NO! Probably the biggest myth when it comes to rosé is that the paler it is, the drier it will be. However, the colour does not really tell you anything about the sweetness. The colour comes from the skins of the grapes and depending on how long they are left on will depended on the deepness of colour. This is not equivalent to its sweetness. So next time you’re looking for a rosé don’t be put off something with a deeper colour if you like the sound of it. It might not be quite what you think! It’s been a rainy day today but it hasn’t stopped us getting out and about. We set off this morning from Pickering on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway to Whitby. Not many people fancied it though with the weather - very quiet train. Once we got to Whitby we had some food and went to the Whitby Marine Discovery Centre where we learnt about marine life and also about lobsters. Naturally on our return journey the rain stopped but we didn’t care - another great railway themed day!
