12th Day of our Camino from Porto to Santiago de Compostela. Today’s 10 mile walk took us from Caldas de Reis to the outskirts of Padrón. TODAY THE RAIN CAME WITH US. We left around 9am to walk the 10 miles to Padron and knew, as rain was forecast early afternoon we might be lucky and miss the worst of it … best laid plans and all that !!! A brief bakery stop to pick up a couple of croissants (we couldn’t eat two oversized pain o chocolate’s in two consecutive days) and a couple of empanadas. There’d been some overnight rain but the sky, although cloudy, allowed the sun though which allowed us to start with T-shirt and jumper that in turn, after a mile or so became just the single layer. The route was nothing too strenuous and the mainly along deserted roads through small hamlets with a handful of houses and several small holdings / allotments where we had a touch of soil envy as everything looked so fertile and well looked after. After this, the route took us onto gravel footpaths and then into woodland where the path ‘undulated’ through the trees. A lovely part of the walk. Then …. Just as we left the woodland path, the rain came … and boy did it rain. I tried to capture it on video but as soon as I got my phone out it got drenched and the touch screen wouldn’t work (I capture one second of footage !!!) Luckily we’d covered our rucksack and put on rain jackets but within a minute, we were soaked from top to bottom, but thankfully, only on the outside. We arrived at our overnight stay around 1:45 and it was so nice to have a warm shower and to change into dry & clean(ish) clothes. An added bonus was a wood burner in the front room which we duly lit and the drying out process commenced. A trip to the local supermarket to buy pizza, wine and beer saw us settle in with Netflix playing on my phone. Still my knee is a bit stiff but nothing too concerning and there are no blisters 😊 Tomorrow (Saturday) we have an early start planned as we have a 15 mile walk into Santiago de Compostela. The weather forecast is for rain but, we aim to keep our spirits high & arrive around 2 o’clock ish.

Want to see orchards bursting with blossom? The blossom will be at its peak this weekend and Walk 4: Chartham to Canterbury in Kent, is the perfect walk to experience it. We ventured out on this walk on Tuesday. It takes you through several magnificent orchards, No Man’s Orchard is my favourite- full of old gnarled apple trees with pools of cuckoo flowers - it’s at its best this week. One orchard has been dug up, hopefully to be replanted with new fruit trees. I recently took some photos of Andy to enter into a photo competition. I changed my mind and didn't enter...but wanted the photos to be seen anyway because I'm really proud of them. They are part of my creative practice and growth as an artist. I recently started following @juliacameronlive morning pages and artist date prompts. It was amazing to dedicate time to my creative practice but it only lasted a week (two weeks for artist dates) then school started again (too early to do morning pages) then school holidays (no time alone). #reality . SO MANY EXCUSES!!! I'm currently wondering if I'm making excuses or if I'm literally in a season where I can't dedicate that much time, when I have 5 boys to look after. Anyway. 11th Day of our Camino from Porto to Santiago de Compostela. Today’s 12 mile walk took us from Pontevedra to Caldas de Reis We were a bit sad to leave Pontevedra after just one evening as the town had so much to see and we just scratched the surface during our stay. We did have a little lay in this morning, for three main reasons, the room we stayed in was so nice and the bed probably the comfiest we’ve had so far, the bakery didn’t open till 9am and finally, our room in CdR wouldn’t be ready till 4pm so there was no rush. After picking up the biggest Pain O Chocolates (breakfast) & two Empanadas (lunch) we walked along country lanes that wound through villages and farmland as the path tracked the train line going north. There were a few inclines but these were relatively easy and nothing like the steep climbs we had yesterday. As with yesterday, we stopped roughly half way along our route to have lunch, although this time finding shade was not, due to the clouds above, such a priority. We had a few spots of rain in the mid afternoon… enough to put on our rucksack rain covers and rain jackets, although these were on/off several times as the clouds broke intermittently to allow the sun to make an appearance. My right knee is still aching a bit but this is easing …. still no blisters 😊 Tomorrow (Friday) we make our way to Padron where we’ve somehow managed to bag a house just to the south of town … we’re tempted to cook for ourselves but, knowing us we’ll grab a pizza and watch Netflix all evening 🤣🤣 Bom Caminho everyone 🙏💚😊
92 years ago yesterday (24 April, 1932) the Kinder Scout Mass Trespass took place. This marked the beginning of the right-to-roam movement. 🥾 Thanks to these pioneers we can now all enjoy the right to access our Peak District National Park. "There were hundreds of young men and women, lads and girls, in their picturesque rambling gear: shorts of every length and colour, flannels and breeches, even overalls, vivid colours and drab khaki…multi-coloured sweaters and pullovers, army packs and rucksacks of every size and shape." - Benny Rothman, speaking in 1982, recalling the moment he addressed ramblers before setting off on the Mass Trespass. This Sunday, I will be doing the exact route of the Mass Trespass with my hiking chums. 11th Day of our Camino from Porto to Santiago de Compostela. Today’s 13 mile walk took us from Redondela to Pontevedra (a wonderful town that we’ve spend far too little time in. We will return!!) We started walking around 7:30am and it was noticeable how the numbers of pilgrims starting the day had increased as two routes have merged plus, the inclusion of Pilgrims walking the final 100km to Santiago. Today’s walk was the most challenging, and also the most rewarding, so far with several climbs up and down of which some were very, very, very steep. We walked through old towns and villages, along urban roads, woodland paths, river walking and got some fantastic sights I’ll remember for a while to come. We stopped at one cafe late morning for a drink and bought two Empanadas (small pies) to take away. Later in the walk, we found a hill top bench in the shade, and eat them whilst watching the rest of the world walk by….. a perfect moment!! Today saw the weather getting cooler and rain is forecast for the next few days. Just a slight ache behind my right knee which I put down to the downhill stretches of the walk but still no blisters 😊 Tomorrow (Thursday) we make our way to Caldas de Reis - again, this looks like a lovely old town with plenty of restaurants and bars to feed and water a weary Pilgrim.
