The Bali Starling has faced critical threats due to habitat loss, poaching, and the illegal pet trade, which dramatically reduced its numbers in the wild. Conservation efforts have been ongoing to save the Bali starling from extinction. These efforts include breeding programs in captivity, with the aim of releasing birds back into protected habitats, as well as strict legal measures to combat poaching and the trade of these birds. The bird is legally protected under Indonesian law and is listed on CITES Appendix I, which bans international trade of the species. Protected areas such as the Bali Barat National Park have been central to conservation strategies. Additionally, there have been community-based initiatives and programs which involve local inhabitants in conservation activities, thereby increasing local support and engagement in protecting the Bali starling. Despite these efforts, the wild population has remained critically low, with estimates varying over the years. However, there has been some success in increasing the number of Bali starlings through these conservation projects, and captive-bred individuals have been released into the wild to bolster the population. The Long-tailed Hornbills (𝘛𝘳𝘰𝘱𝘪𝘤𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘶𝘴 𝘴𝘱𝘱.) are some of the smaller hornbill species found in Africa. This individual here is a White-crested Long-tailed Hornbill (𝘛. 𝘢𝘭𝘣𝘰𝘤𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘴 𝘢𝘭𝘣𝘰𝘤𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘴), boy is that a mouthful! Those ornate tails may seem like a hindrance when flying through the thick forests, however like most hornbills they are very adept at navigating throughout their range and are great at manoeuvring in tight spots. It was a real treat to have come face-to-face with this genus after a very, very long time, my first was working with a beautiful pair of Eastern Long-tailed Hornbills (𝘛. 𝘢. 𝘤𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘪) from long ago. 08•15•2023 Turaco’s fruit for today and tomorrow. They’re having green figs, longan, marigolds, nasturtiums, pansies, papaya, snapdragons. This is my first time adding edible flowers into my softbill diet. I know some keepers will offer a little bit of leafy greens to their turacos (great blue turacos and the grey species are exception, they eat a lot more greenies) as well but I decided to try the flowers first. Generally the flowers that’s edible for us are safe for birds as well, but I still recommend look the flower up before you feed it. Only use flower that’s organic or homegrown as they’re very delicate and hard to wash, so you would want your flowers as clean as possible. My Livingston’s Turaco Venus likes her flowers more than my Violaceous Turaco Pluto, which is interesting as from what I heard from keepers who keeps the purple species mentioned that they don’t really touch their greenies. Another interesting fruit I added this week is longan. This fruit is related to lychees and rambutans. I found this in my local Asian grocery store and they’re surprisingly good, even compared with those I had when I was living in Hong Kong. I did some research and the nutritional value is basically same as lychee, higher in vitamin C but lower in iron, so I would say feed sparingly like lychee will be fine. I don’t think my birds enjoy it too much but it’s a sweet tasting fruit so maybe your birds will like it. 08•08•2023 Turaco’s fruit for today and tomorrow. They’re having apple, black plum, black seedless grapes, Brown Turkey figs, white nectarine. I’m very luckily as this week my local grocery store has figs, both me and the birds love it. They’re very seasonal and fragile fruits, but both iron and vitamin C is low in this fruit which makes it a very good choice for all frugivore birds. In fact figs are one of the favorite type of fruit for both fruit eating pigeons and turacos. Our African Green Pigeon Grogu is usually very picky about what fruit he eats and even he loves it! I was originally planning to feed figs this week but I went to several grocery stores and can’t find any still, so I decided to feed them lychees this week. Note that lychee is very high in vitamin C so feed sparingly for iron sensitive birds. The variety I can find in my area seems to have bigger pits than the ones I used to have in Asia, and less sweet too. To feed lychee to your birds remove the skin and pit as only the white flesh is edible. 07•24•2023 Turaco’s fruit for today and tomorrow. They’re having apple, black plum, golden kiwi, white nectarine, white peach and yellow dragon fruit. All of the fruits I’m using are low in iron. Note that kiwi is rich in vitamin C which will increase the amount of iron that birds absorb, so for iron sensitive birds like toucans, lories and mynahs should have it in moderation. Then and now 2023 addition Part 1/10 This is Andrew Raymond. Andrew was enrolled in hospice care and failed miserably having lived two years. Andrew was found on a school property, he was so tiny I assumed he was a fledgling, both his eyes were infected, he had multiple abscesses on his feet, and overall wasn't in good shape. I provided hospice care, he was given antibiotics and his wounds were cleaned every 6 hours, he also received a feeding after these cleans. Andrew lost his eye and mobility of his one foot to this infection but he survived. The first photo was taken end 2020, the second end 2021 and the final photo several days ago. In the final photo you will note Andrew is dirty, the environment around him is dirty, and he is giving me a dirty look. I initially wanted to take a better photo after the daily cleanup but then I thought this is evidence of Andrew LIVING he spends his time out foraging, getting into things, and rubbing his beak on different textures - he gets dirty and his foraging (with help from the others) makes a mess - but all this proves he is living life to the fullest. Overall his beak is now a deep orange, his feathers are less ragged and he has beaten his days without illness record (6 months of no infections!) #birdsofinstagram #softbill #disability #Andrew #messy
