I made this print in two ways… one super layered and crowded and the other with the lattice background (entered the former in the #spdcchallenge). I know Instagram is moving towards more video based content and many of my followers will not see this post… however, if you do, please don’t stop sharing your still images!!! I find video after video way too much stimulation and I often skip right past them (no offense!) When I come to Instagram I like to look at art, design, fashion, photography... This week’s @spoonflower design challenge theme is Autumn Botanicals. Autumn is around the corner here and there’s already a very slight chill in the air that goes with that almost-back-to-school feeling. My entry to this week’s challenge was inspired by the swirling, complex botanical imagery in textiles and wallpaper of the Arts and Crafts movement. The background is a really dark brown with a teal green texture for contrast - I’d especially like to see this design printed on lush velvet for cushions (swipe left). “Phantasmagoria” that is the Spoonflower challenge for this week. My entry for “Pastel Halloween” depicting sweet little girl witches was not as popular as I had anticipated. So, I threw out the “cute” for this entry and went full throttle on the theme “Phantasmagoria”. The upcoming Spoonflower challenge (Boardsports) has taken me back to the 80s when I used to ride an old skateboard down the hill as a kid. My brother had replaced the broken plastic board with a piece of plywood cut to the same shape and it became mine. Sometimes I'd ride down the hill and into an alleyway where there was an almond tree hanging over the fence. I'd fill up on almonds, then skate back up the hill. I loved that board until I hit a rock, skidded and landed on the gravel driveway. I was picking little stones out of my forearm for the rest of the day. This week’s @spoonflower design challenge is talismans, symbols of good luck - so I have drawn some questionably lucky black kittens (lucky here in the UK anyway) in a lucky field of lucky four leaf clovers. I’ve put one of the cats in a Japanese Maneki-Nero pose for extra good fortune. I’ve had fun playing with the colours and soon there will be white cats and Russian blue grey cats with green eyes in the collection. I think they lend themselves to children’s wear - swipe to see as a baby t shirt 😍. New design: this is for this week’s @spoonflower Yellow and Grey design challenge, because Pantone have chosen these two colours for their Colors of the Year. I went for a haphazard patchwork quilt kind of look (sums up my brain right now) - I very rarely use pure grayscale grey with colour in my work but I followed the rules with this entry. Reimagined Damask wallpaper was the brief for this week’s @spoonflower design challenge so I’ve entered with this colourful repeat pattern based on chinoiserie but with overlays of colour inspired by Risograph and screen printing. Inky doodled faces - my entry for this week’s @spoonflower Continuous Contour design challenge. The brief was to design a pattern using continuous contour lines and a soft on trend colour palette was suggested. I doodled each of these faces quite speedily on my iPad then thickened the lines and joined them all up before further tweaking.
