Our 26th helmet is the Soviet SSH60 helmet. The helmet was first developed in 1960 and was basically an updated version of the SSH40. The overall shell is the same but the placement of the liner rivets are towards the top of the shell while the SSH40 they were one the side closer to the bottom. The liner is a 4-pad liner that was made to be adjusted so that the wearer could wear a cold weather hat underneath. I’m not sure what the liner is made out of but it seems to be the faux leather that the soviets used for their ammo pouches. The chinstrap was now made of leather and a roller buckle instead of canvas with a friction buckle. The helmets were still painted green but now a darker shade. These helmets were used until somewhere around the early 1970s when they were slowly being replaced by the SSH68 but were most likely used until the 1990s. This particular helmet has some writing. It’s either Dari or Pashto from Afghanistan. This tells me that it is possible that this helmet was capture from the soviets during the Soviet-Afghan war or it was sold to them a few years later but I doubt that. I have yet to be able to translate it but I’m sure one of the writing is a name, but the rest I’m not sure.
