Obr43 uniform (Soviet Union) The "gimnasterka" tunic was in service in the militaries of Russia for a century or more. It first began to appear in the Tsarist Russian Army in the 1870s, and would not be replaced by something more modern until 1969 (although some remained in service after this). Naturally in that time it went through some changes. The Bolsheviks, keen on discarding any elements of the Red Army's uniforms that retained a "Tsarist" feel, got rid of the traditional rank structure and the accompanying insignia. Rank, as it existed in the 1920s, was instead worn on the sleeve. Eventually the Soviets realized that this was no way to run a military, and so the Tsarist-style rank system was reintroduced in 1935, to be worn on the collar tabs. In turn, this insignia was found to be difficult to see in combat, and so shoulder boards were reinstated in full in 1943. The stand-and-fall collar was also removed. At first, officers were the only ones given chest pockets, followed by women in September 1944, and finally all ranks from early 1945 (although pocketless tunics remained in production until 1948). I will confess that I am not particularly skilled when it comes to uniforms like this. However, in consultation with some of my more knowledgeable colleagues (who can chime in if they like, as I don't remember their usernames here), the material used on this uniform is not of wartime manufacture. The buttons and perhaps the shoulder boards have likely also been replaced, as those tend to wear out quickly but are pristine here, unlike the rest of the uniform. However, there is ghosting from the Order of the Red Star - whoever wore it originally was likely a World War II veteran. The shoulder boards on this uniform are from before 1955, at which point they were changed to a solid color. Big Polish "Bechatka" winter coat in Wz.68 Moro camouflage, the last of my haul from @warsaw_surplus . I love Warsaw Pact winter wear and this might be a new favorite - at the very least, it's neck and neck with what the Romanians cooked up. Bechatka coats came about in the 1960s and continued being manufactured into the 1990s; the Moro coats are the middle children of the lot, and also my personal favorites. This particular one was made in 1980, just old enough to have the natural wool inner liner used before production swapped to a synthetic substitute [3/9]. The standout feature is of course the faux fur collar, which makes it look a bit like a proto-Afghanka. 1. Cold war GP-4u civilian gas mask from 1966. These masks were made since 1953 till 1976. They were a replacement for old WWII era civilian gas masks. GP-4u is an upgraded version of the original GP-4, with a longer hose, covered in cloth. 2. Cold war PDF children’s gas mask from 1976. This mask was made since 1960’s till 1980’s. This is the smallest version of the PDF masks, issued to children from 1 to 4 years. They were used with DP-6 or GP-5 filter. 3. Cold war PMK-2 military gas mask from 1990 this mask was made since 1985 till 2000’s. It was an upgraded version of the PMK-1, which was a replacement for old pmg masks. The most unique thing about this mask is that it didn’t have a thread, but the filter was simply inserted by the top into the mask. 4. Cold war GP-7 gas mask from 1999. This mask was made since 1980’s till 2000’s. It was a civilian mask based on PMK platform, to replace old-styled GP-5 masks. Well-worn Polish Wz.63 paratrooper helmet from @warsaw_surplus marked "Mazurowski" [5/10]. I can never decide whether I prefer NOS or issued items; as with most things, I guess it hinges on the context. I'd rather have a brand-new belt buckle than a rust-encrusted one, but the fact that this helmet likely leaped out of an Antonov a few times makes it way cooler than an unissued shell that spent its life on a shelf. The roughly-hemispherical shape of the Wz.63's shell calls to mind the old German M38 para helmet, but the Polish design is a major leap forward in terms of comfort. The shell's rim is surrounded by a two-piece rubber guard, which protects the user's head from getting bashed by the steel pot in the event of an excessively rough landing. In addition, the liner includes a large leather guard that covers the ears and cups the back of the wearer's head, keeping the helmet firmly in place. The similar guard found on Romania's M73 para helmet was likely inspired by what the Wz.63 has. While most Warsaw Pact equipment was of Soviet origin in some shape or form, the other member nations also sometimes supplied each other with domestically-designed war materiel. East Germany obtained a sizeable number of Wz.63 helmets to equip their sole airborne formation, 40 Fallschirmjägerbataillon "Willi Sänger" [8/10]. The DDR's elite counterterrorism unit Diensteinheit IX also used Wz.63s along with other pieces of paratrooper kit [9/10]. *Alt history scenario* “Nationale Volksarmee and Korean people’s Army joint military exercise in 1985.” After Kim Il Sung’s visit to the DDR in 1984, Kim and Erich Honecker expanded the ties of the two countries. The expansion includes not just in the economic aspect but also military, as the two nations share many similar circumstances, such as the division of their nations into a western aligned nation and a Communist nation. Through joint military exercises the two nations military can learn from each others doctrine to help boaster their military capabilities. In 1985, Kim Il Sung sent a group of KPA infiltration unit to train with the NVA. They group got training from 40. Fallschirmjägerbataillon “Willi Sänger.” The joint training exercise help the KPA gain experience outside of their country with a Warsaw pact country. Polish Wz.68 "Moro" uniform, part of a small cache of items from @warsaw_surplus . The standout feature here is the quality; this uniform makes the Soviet Obr.69 seem lightweight, and the Romanian equivalents are cotton tweed rags in comparison. Wz.68 sets are among the rarest standard-issue Warsaw Pact uniforms out there, due in part to the Polish government destroying massive stocks of surplus in the 1990s during the country's integration into NATO. Evidently, the bastards didn't finish the job because this one is NOS, right down to the factory tag sewn to the sleeve on a swatch of Moro fabric. A true rarity, because getting Moro usually involves buying grandpa's old paint-spattered work clothes on eBay for $200 + shipping. Wz.68 was rolled out in the late 1960s as a replacement for Wz.58 "Deszczyk" (Drizzle) rain camo, a move that may have been done to differentiate LWP troops from East German and Czechoslovak allies who were using similar patterns. Moro stuck around in army use for 20 years until the final days of the Warsaw Pact, when it was replaced by Wz.89 "Puma" in 1989. Soviet U-32M cascaded 3 stage image converter tube removed from a hungarian NSZP-3 rifle scope. This is a true gen1 tube as you can see on the brown tinted photocathode (probably S20). Unfortunately a lot of paint have chipped of during the removal which is not a huge problem. Maybe I will remove all of the paint with acetone in the future just to see the insides without damaging the tube. Quite a rare piece on its own. It was stated not working but as I have observed this tube I could not diagnose any kind of internal problem so maybe with new electronics it could be turned on (which I will try to do). This one was produced in 1977 and that is all I know about it. *Alt history impression* “NVA Officer during a urban combat training exercise in the early 1990s.” It has been a while since we brought out the Stg-940 and it has been converted into a Stg-952. The Stg-952 is is the wired folding stock version of the Stg-940 but chambered in 5.45×39mm. The look of the wired stock version of the Stg-940 gives it a even more unique look. This is what it would looks like if it when into service with the NVA in the 1990s alongside with the UTV uniform and field gear.
