Ever felt like you're being watched in the night? Well... if you were on patrol in Africa, you probably were. Be it by a lion (pic 1) or your team while you conduct a 'short stop' (pic 2). A key capability within Conservation law enforcement is the art of effective night patrolling. While its an essential task, many protected areas don't do it. This is generally because they either don't know how to do it safely, or they are terrified of what's watching them in the night... because they've never been taught how or forgotten due to peer pressure from the resistance of those who hadn't. Night vision devices while not a substitute for good patrolling techniques, can give your Rangers the situational awareness they need to patrol comfortably and more effectively in the night. 2018 - Mellivora Systems was off to a flying start. With in 3 months of its inception, we had a Basic Field Ranger course (BFR) in Mozambique, a BFR in Malawi, and a nation-wide screening and combatives program in Rwanda with the RDB for all of their Rangers. By the end of 2019, we had completed 32 programs across Africa. The Honey Badger (Mellivora Capensis), or ratel, is a member of the mustelid family, with the mongoose and wolverine as its long-distance cousins. Due to their thick skin, ferocity and tenacious audacity, they have very few natural predators who don't even want to get involved unless they absolutely have to. The beast embodies irreversible momentum, impervious to venom and will not stop until it gets its paws on the prize. Mellivora Systems embodies many of these behaviors. The most challenging threats are not always the ones with the guns. This man had invested everything into his charcoal production inside a South Sudanese National Park. As the Rangers begun to clear his camp, he sprinted off into the tree line, arming him self with large stones and returned as an attempted martyr. For 2 hours he antagonised the Rangers to shoot him, avoiding arrest. One of the Rangers, over zealous, rushed the antagoniser, who rewarded the Ranger with a broken hand. Time & space was the key. Eventually the man could not run anymore and gave up in an emotional mess. The Rangers arrested him, gave him water and aided him off till in prisoned for assault. Without their Code of Conduct and comprehensive training in Human Rights, the Martyr likely would have gotten what he wanted. Midpen Rangers had the honor of attending the 2024 Fallen Officers Memorial hosted by the San Mateo County Police Chiefs and Sheriffs Association and The One Hundred Club of San Mateo County earlier this month. May 15 was first proclaimed as National Peace Officers Memorial Day in 1962 by President Kennedy. 📰 ARTICLE from SABC News: Rhino poachers arrested in 2020 begin jail term: Three Rhino poachers who were arrested in 2020 have started serving their jail terms after they were convicted and sentenced by the Kathu Magistrate’s Court in the Northern Cape. 27-year-old David Mecwi, 26-year-old Kethamile Kooper and 27-year-old Tebogo Megare have all been sentenced to a combined 75-years for several counts of criminal activities. They were each found guilty on eight counts including contravention of the immigration act, possession of unlicensed firearms and entering the Republic with wild animals. All three men were handed 25-years direct imprisonment. The fourth suspect in the matter was killed during the arrest of the three in 2020. Provincial Hawks spokesperson, Nomthandazo Mnisi elaborates. “During April 2020, police within the farm borders of South Africa and Botswana were informed of four unknown footprints entering farm barrage. Several role players, including chopper services and anti-poaching units, were also contacted to assist in tracking the accused as the owner of the farm experienced poachers in the past. The accused made a series of court appearances until their sentencing. One of the pressing issues for global defense and security systems in this age, is the threat of GPS-Denial with so many capabilities relying on satellite GPS systems for navigation, surveying, time synch, commercial agriculture, drone automation, aviation requirements, weather forecast and so many other fields. Recent events have seen GPS capabilities completely shut down in conflict zones as a means to suppress the opposition. New year, new ranger story: this time it takes us to Adam Turner in Sweden. How does he contribute to planetary health? Like all rangers: by protecting wildlife and thus biodiversity and ecological habitats. Here is his story to go with the photo: „This is a picture of me on patrol beside a Natura 2000 site in Hansta Nature Reserve. This is an ancient woodland full of old growth Oaks and Hazel trees. I work at Järvafriområden in Stockholm City Municipality, the only protected area in the city with a full-time ranger. I am a conservation officer as well as a hunting and fishing warden to help prevent the illegal harvesting of Wildlife, which is strictly prohibited. Patrolling is my main focus, but also seasonal tasks such as habitat management take place. Winter is a good time to cut back overgrown forest edges and thickets to encourage biodiversity and foraging for wildlife.“ And sometimes he is rewarded by tracks of wildlife, like the bear tracks in the second photo. But that moment when you're walking through the African bush, talking to conservationists about opportunities to preserve the ecologically diverse bush thicket around you... and you come across an elephant carcass, maybe a month old. Sadly, potentially killed by a poacher, as the valuable tusks were taken to be sold off down the value chain. A heartbreaking end to the life of a majestic creature. Not one I'll forget easily. If this was a month old, what was I doing a month ago, when this elephant would have faced up to its killer... There are many good causes to support this Christmas. A best practice of how the European Ranger Network can help: The first firefighting training of Macedonian rangers with fire suits, donated by Spanish rangers (@aeafma)👩🚒. Aleksandar Gugoski from Macedonia organised this aid together with Borja Díaz, Spanish ranger and current ERF Training Officer. The idea was born at our European Ranger Congress last year, together with the Spanish rangers we funded the shipment of the uniforms. Since the European Ranger Congress in Albania, Macedonia's rangers, led by @aleksandargugoski, have also been working on their own ranger association in order to officially become part of the European ranger network and thus be able to utilise our exchange, support and training offers more easily. But the Macedonian rangers also have a lot to contribute to the European ranger family, as our interview with Gjuro Jovcheski, head ranger of Galičica National Park @galicicanp, and Aleksandar shows. Montenegro's rangers have both: breathtaking nature that is still unspoilt in many places. And the fear that it won't stay that way for much longer. The young country is experiencing a boom in tourism, which is a welcome source of income. Many colleagues in similar areas probably know how difficult it is for rangers to make the cause of nature heard. As the public often perceives Montenegro's rangers as obstacles to success rather than conservationists, the aim is to establish a ranger association. Rangers such as Mićan Kasalica believe that this will not only ensure adequate training, better pay and a higher standing for rangers, but also more clout for rangers in nature conservation through their integration into the European Ranger Federation. The German Black Forest National Park @nationalparkschwarzwald is already a powerful partner for Durmitor National Park, part of @nationalparksofmontenegro. Time for a new ranger story! Today with a ranger from Switzerland, whom many of you probably know, and a ranger from Ireland: Niki Göth, our former ERF project manager, used his holiday trip to visit Dermot Breen in Connemara National Park. How this contributes to sustainability and environmental protection strategies? The exchange between rangers is probably the most efficient way to make each other even fitter for the protection of biodiversity, natural habitats or topics such as education for sustainable development. Because every ranger has their own experiences and highly practicable methods to pass on, especially when there are a few hundred miles between the fellow rangers. In Niki and Dermot's case, it was specifically about combating neophytes – one of the greatest threats to biodiversity, as recently revealed in a study by the World Biodiversity Council IPBES – and the challenge of semi-wild goats for the regrowth of young trees. In this case, Aleksander Gugoski from Macedonia, who sent us his photo from a trilateral ranger project with rangers from Macedonia, Albania and Greece for the protection of brown bears. Part of it will be the formation of an intervention team that will take over wherever a bear is threatened.
