Being able to meet new people, see the country and share a small part of what I’ve learned doing something I love is one of my greatest joys. I met @marsupial_j early on in her BJJ journey at a camp @groundswellgrappling had put together years ago. She and @jeremyguillard1 came to work together @raptor_academy_of_martial_arts where I learned that he had encountered my instructional with @stephan_kesting more than a decade back. They work together building an incredible community in central PA and invited me to come be a part of it this weekend. It was a real honor to share a room with these two, their teachers and students at their school. Every person I engaged with was representative of the thoughtful and gracious approach to learning they’ve cultivated here. Most of the time we never learn of the impact we have upon the world until long after we leave. To know that there was a positive connection to this crew over a significant span of time, then to come and be a part of what they do is truly a gift. I haven’t usually fit in in many places and BJJ was probably one of the least hospitable places I could choose to be. I haven’t always shared the same opinions or values as the majority and I often suffered for that. Seeing what raptor stands for makes me think I’m not sitting alone at my lunch table anymore. If you’re looking for a solid, grounded, inspiring group of people to meet, make sure you stop in there. I know I’ll definitely be back. Here’s the last set of pics from that 2,800 km solo trip I did back in 1993. The final leg was a reasonably short but very difficult and dangerous 60 km segment from the mouth of the Seal River to Churchill along the coast of Hudson Bay. ... There are enormous tides, frequent storms, huge tidal flats and the ever present threat of polar bears along this stretch so it’s legitimately very dangerous. In fact I have strongly discouraged other people from paddling thus stretch and have found ways to avoid it (boat or float plane pickup) on other trips that have ended at the bay. ... On the other hand, paddling for an hour amidst a pod of belugas was one of the peak experiences of my life. A few years ago I read about how a man defended himself against a knife attack with a plastic Star Wars light saber. It was the only thing he could get his hands on and it saved his life. Almost always having something is better than having nothing, even if it is just to deflect a weapon or to distract your opponent. When I first met Stephan Kesting it was at Marcus Soares’ club, I was a white belt and Stephan was already a purple belt. Back then being a purple belt was a really big deal as Jiu-Jitsu was so new in Canada at the time. Stephan was someone who would always take the time to help you and support you on your Jiu-Jitsu journey. At this same time Stephan had just started GrappleArts, which offered training videos and a blog, this has grown to be known and respected in the BJJ community around the world. Stephan was also one of Canada’s earliest BJJ Black Belts, earning it in 2006. When I moved to Penticton and then to Kelowna, Stephan kept in touch and has come to do a few seminars at our club. Getting smashed in half guard when your opponent has the cross face and underhook sucks! Your neck is being twisted, it's hard to breathe, and - worst of all - your opponent is well set up to pass your guard. Here are 3 of my favorite responses to this situation: the Kamikaze Sweep, the Butterfly Lift, and the Twist Sweep. Each of them has an aggressive option ending in a sweep where you get to the top and a less aggressive option where you use the threat of the sweep to re-establish a good guard position. Gripfighting is the first part of establishing posture, 2) Have a couple of ways to do every part of the guard pass including 2 ways to pass the guard, at least one pass to the left and to the right, and at least one standing and one kneeling guard pass, 3) Either be fast or be heavy when you're passing the guard. Speed based passes require speed and pressure passes require pressure; trying to do a guard pass without using its required attribute is a huge mistake, 4) Control your opponent at the end of the technique.
