"My 14-year-old son died. I took him to the doctors twice the same week of his death. They diagnosed him with light pneumonia in his left lung. He died less than a week later and when the autopsy came back, it showed he had a blood clot in his left lung and no pneumonia. I’ve done a lot of research and I found that blood clots are often misdiagnosed as pneumonia, resulting in severe injury or death. About 100,000 people die every year from blood clots, which is 274 a day. I want to spread awareness that the symptoms of blood clots are similar to other conditions, like pneumonia, and further investigation may be needed. If your kid or anyone that you know has been diagnosed with pneumonia, it’s important to get them checked for blood clot. Don’t be a statistic." As we celebrate the beautiful journey of motherhood, let's also acknowledge the challenges some women face during pregnancy and childbirth, including the potential risk of blood clots. It's crucial to be aware of these risks, especially in the week following childbirth when the risk of blood clots is at its highest. Understanding family medical history and recognizing other risk factors like hospitalization, surgery, and lifestyle can make a big difference in promoting a healthy pregnancy and postpartum period. This Mother's Day, let's raise awareness and support initiatives that promote maternal health and safety. During National Postpartum Awareness Week for Black, Brown and Indigenous Birthing People, we’re shining a light on the disparities that exist in healthcare during postpartum, also called the “fourth trimester.” Black women are more likely to experience life-threatening blood clots during pregnancy and in the three months after giving birth than any other group. Studies have shown that social determinates of health also contribute to potentially fatal outcomes for BIPOC women during postpartum, including exposure to racial trauma, discrimination, and marginalization; barriers such as systematic racism and implicit bias within the healthcare system; the possibility of being uninsured; and reduced access to reproductive healthcare services. It’s no secret that using contraception containing estrogen increases a woman’s risk for developing life-threatening blood clots, but did you ever wonder why? The pill, the patch or the ring — when they contain estrogen — cause the body to hormonally imitate pregnancy, or to think it’s pregnant. In doing so, this prevents pregnancy. During pregnancy, estrogen increases the clotting factors in a woman’s blood in order to protect the woman and baby from serious bleeding. Women’s bodies have evolved over time to offer some protection from major bleeding related to pregnancy. The female body actually produces more clotting factors early on in the pregnancy so that blood will clot more readily to prepare for the possibility of a bleeding challenge that might occur with a miscarriage or during childbirth. When birth control methods made with estrogen cause the body to think that it’s pregnant, these same changes will occur, putting women at an increased risk for blood clots. Women with clotting disorders or a personal or family history of blood clots face an even higher risk. "In March 1989, I was a sophomore in college and on spring break in Florida when my left calf became extremely swollen and I could barely walk. I also had severe pain in between my shoulders and had shortness of breath. A friend took me to the ER, where I stayed for almost two weeks. I was diagnosed with a blood clot in my leg (DVT) and several blood clots in my lungs (PE). In the early and mid-90s, I experienced several additional clots, including while pregnant, and still no understanding of why. Finally, in 1996, I was diagnosed with a newly discovered genetic clotting disorder, factor V Leiden. Later, my sister and daughter also tested positive. On January 30, 2007, I faced with another round of DVTs and several clots in my lungs, some blocking my pulmonary arteries and many in the lower lobes. I was told that most do not survive. However, I defied the odds and feel blessed to be alive and able to share my story. I continue to live with chronic leg swelling and pain, lung issues and the constant fear of developing more clots. There have been so many changes in the procedures for caring for a clot. In 1989, I was sent home using a wheelchair and was told to not exercise or walk much. Now, we are encouraged to get up and move. I have also lived most of my adult life on blood thinners and with bi-weekly blood tests. But I have no complaints because I am alive, active and making new memories." 🩸 I NO LONGER LIVE IN FEAR OF ANOTHER RE-CLOT: STACI’S STORY 🩸 Meet Staci, an #APSWarrior who’s sharing her journey battling blood clots. It all started with a nagging cough and chest discomfort in July 2018. Despite normal x-rays and oxygen levels, Staci’s symptoms persisted, leaving her short of breath and experiencing chest squeezing. After multiple trips to urgent care and the ER, Staci’s persistence paid off. A high d-dimer and a CT scan revealed bilateral pulmonary emboli on August 6, 2018. Thus began her fight against not just one, but several more clotting incidents. Diagnosed with #AntiphospholipidSyndrome (APS) and May-Thurner syndrome, Staci’s journey wasn’t easy. But armed with resilience, she faced each challenge head-on. Now, almost four years later, Staci stands strong, living without the fear of another re-clot. Staci’s story is a reminder: blood clots can strike unexpectedly, and the signs aren’t always obvious. Through her experience, she’s shed light on the importance of recognising the lesser-known symptoms and understanding the diverse risk factors. Let’s give a shoutout to Stop the Clot for their invaluable work in raising awareness and supporting and sharing stories from individuals, like Staci, on their journey to recovery. 💪 Find Staci’s story in our bio link: ‘I No Longer Live in Fear of Another Re-Clot: Staci’s Story’. #BloodClotAwareness #PulmonaryEmbolism #APS #StopTheClot #HealthJourney #Thrombosis

#deepveinthrombosis (DVT) involves the formation of blood clots in deep veins. Utilizing ultrasound scans and assessing risk factors, vascular surgeons identify the presence of clots. To treat deep vein thrombosis (DVT), two main approaches are used. Our vascular surgeons may prescribe blood-thinning medications to prevent and dissolve clots. Alternatively, for extensive DVT, a minimally invasive procedure called thrombolysis involves using mechanical devices and specific drugs to dissolve clots. "My sister Jessica was diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis that caused her to have a pulmonary embolism when she was 21 and she almost died. She had an IVC filter placed at that time, but it didn’t keep her from developing another DVT in July 2023 that caused her to have a PE again, and this time it took her life. Jessica wasn’t great about having knowledge of her condition and what she should do to prevent clots from returning. She probably even thought she was invincible and protected with the filter in place, but she’s gone now, and she was only 36. There has been so much my family has learned, but for us, it’s too late. Losing my sister at such a young age has been very difficult for me and my family and we miss her every day. I wish I would have been more involved with her health care, but more so I wish she knew just how serious the outcome could be. Follow-up care with your doctor is so important, and so is living a healthy lifestyle. It’s also important to avoid risk factors that can cause clots. I recently learned about Stop the Clot and wanted to share my sister’s story in hopes it will reach others in similar situations to catch and prevent something before it is too late." 5 years ago today, at approximately this time (3:45pm) I was wrapping up my 3rd week of seeing a PT trying to figure out out to resolve what was believed to be an extreme case of sciatica. But the whole week my leg had been bothering me as well as my back. The PT looked at my calf, lightly touched it & told me to go for an ultrasound as my problems suddenly seemed like symptoms of a blood clot. Arriving at the hospital around 6 pm, the PA was dismissive of both my PT & I for wasting his time. But the ultrasound revealed I had a 3 foot long clot going from my ankle just about to my groin with pieces broken off in my lungs. I was admitted & Saturday morning they put a catheter in my calf the size of a BIC pen pumping in enzymes to break it up. Sunday they took it out and vacuumed out remaining bits. That dot in the back of my leg is a reminder of how close to death I was. #stoptheclot #stoptheclotstory

"I was six months in my new job as an attorney when I felt pain in my ribs and shortness of breath. I went to urgent care and was rushed to the ER after my D-Dimer blood test came back high. At the hospital, they did a CT scan and found the blood clots in my lungs. I had a thrombectomy procedure that helped get rid of the clots, which were putting a strain on my heart. In terms of risk factors, I was on estrogen-based birth control, which is believed to have contributed to my blood clots. This has changed my lifestyle in that I have to take things slow now. I’ve always been a fast paced person. I’ve leaned a lot since my diagnosis. Reading resources and joining support groups has been so helpful. Credit to @stoptheclot Twelve million adults are misdiagnosed every year in the US, and women and racial and ethnic minorities are 20% to 30% more likely than white men to receive a misdiagnosis, according to a study published in January in JAMA Internal Medicine. Blood clots are often misdiagnosed because the symptoms can be confused with other conditions. For example, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is sometimes misdiagnosed as sciatica, muscle strain, or cramps, while pulmonary embolism (PE) may be misdiagnosed as pneumonia or asthma. During our next PEP Talk, scheduled for Tuesday, May 14 at 7 p.m. ET, we will discuss this disparity and equip women with guidance on how to advocate for themselves if they feel a diagnosis isn’t correct. Blood clot survivors can do anything! Carolyn Taylor of Oklahoma City has always led an active lifestyle. But two years ago, when she was 24, she began experiencing lower left side back pain and leg pain. She didn’t seek treatment right away, and became unable to walk. She finally went to the ER, where doctors discovered blood clots in her leg, or deep vein thrombosis, and clots in her lungs, or a pulmonary embolism. She was also later diagnosed with two blood clotting disorders. After six months of recovery, Carolyn began working out again. It’s been a challenge because she continues to suffer from pain and swelling in her left leg, a condition known as post-thrombotic syndrome. Despite this, she ran Oklahoma City’s iconic Memorial Half Marathon last weekend, logging 13.1 miles while wearing NBCA’s red and white polka dot Team Stop the Clot performance top. Carolyn also raised more than $3,000 for NBCA. Thank you, Carolyn, for your support and for inspiring other blood clot survivors with the hope that they, too, can conquer remarkable milestones! "I was working in the chemistry lab when suddenly I experienced a sharp, stabbing pain in my lower back that caused me to fall to the ground. I was rushed to the nearest hospital and, after some tests, I was sent home with the diagnosis of muscle spasms. From that day onwards, the pain in my back persisted and got worse. The pain and discomfort were mainly in my upper back, near my right shoulder. A few days later, I went to my GP and was prescribed some antibiotics. Three days passed and my symptoms got worse, with shortness of breath becoming more prevalent and back pain persisting. I decided to go to the hospital and was diagnosed with bilateral pulmonary embolism and pneumonia. In terms of risk factors, I have a family history of blood clots and also tested positive for protein S deficiency. Every day since my diagnosis has been challenging. My mental health has been affected. I am grateful for my supportive friends and family and a patient and understanding partner. May marks Women’s Health Month, an important time for the National Blood Clot Alliance as we recognize the heightened risk many women face for blood clots due to estrogen-based birth control, pregnancy, postpartum, and hormone replacement therapy. We've created a social media toolkit for our partners to amplify awareness about women and blood clots. To all healthcare and patient advocacy organizations: we invite you to join us in using this toolkit to empower your community of women with knowledge about their clotting risk so they can take steps to prevent them. And to those impacted by blood clots: your voices are essential in this mission. We urge you to share this information as well. "In January 2017, my husband Brian and I had been married for one year, and I had just given birth to our son seven weeks earlier. Brian started mentioning that he had bad calf pain. For a man that never complained, this was odd, but I didn’t know to be worried. The day before Brian died, we had our first day date out away from the baby. We went to the movies and to Target, and I remember him saying his neck hurt. I was not alarmed by this, because unfortunately I was not aware of the signs of a blood clot. The next morning, Brian woke up with the baby and called for me. When I reached him and took our son, Brian collapsed. I called 9-1-1, and Brian was in and out of consciousness. On the way to the hospital, he passed away. After his death, we found out he had factor V Leiden. Our son Carter, who is now 7, tested positive as well as Brian’s dad and sister. I am raising our son without his dad and we grieve the tremendous loss every day. My advice to others is to be aware of symptoms and if in doubt, please be vocal and just go get yourself checked. If you have a family member who has had a blood clot, discuss genetic testing with your doctor, as it is hereditary. Knowledge will save lives!" 4th in the elite field at one of the biggest triathlons (St. Anthony’s) in the US! Just missed out on my goal of top-3 which would have auto qualified me for my professional license but there is still a good chance I can earn it from points from this race! I broke my sacrum twice last year & haven’t had a chance to race with good fitness in ~year and a half. Put in a lot of hard work to come back stronger & better than before & finally got to see the payoff. Excited to plan out the rest of this season that will hopefully build to some professional racing. Shortened swim today because of the chop but came out in 11th. Passed 4 in the long run into T1. Biked ~1hr flat for 40k with a ton of turns = 24.6mph. Ran 35:40 for 10k in the heat/humidity, coming from Rhode Island spring where we haven’t had this kind of weather yet. Had the fastest run split in the elite field & moved from 6th to 4th in the last 1/2 mile. But I’m really happy with my bike. I was competitive & was able to stay with a strong pack of riders. Today is National Tell a Story Day, a time to share a story of your own or listen to the stories of others. For years, we’ve been giving blood clot patients and loved ones a platform to tell their stories on our website, within our educational programs, and through our advocacy efforts. Sharing your blood clot story helps to raise awareness about the signs and symptoms of blood clots, provides insight on the signs and symptoms, the mental and physical recovery process, and offers hope to others who are walking the same path. If you’ve shared a story with us, thank you! If you would like to share your blood clot story, you can do so at the link in bio. #stoptheclot #bloodclots #bloodclotstory #patientstory #nationaltellastoryday #storytelling #patientstory #stoptheclotstory #bloodclotawareness

"In 2013, I woke up with what I thought was a stomach virus. A few hours later, I was in the ER with a diverticulitis attack that split open my intestine and spent 10 days in the hospital. A few months later, I had another diverticulitis attack, but I caught it early and didn’t require hospitalization. As a result, it was determined that I needed a colon resection surgery. This surgery was successful, but while recovering at home, I developed my first DVT in my right leg. I figured my leg was just stiff and sore from not being active and I tried to walk off the soreness. Well, it got to the point where I couldn’t even stand up. A sonogram showed I had a DVT and was admitted back to the hospital. I was discharged seven days later with a diagnosis of factor V Leiden (homozygous) and a prescription for warfarin. I remained on warfarin for a year. After consulting my hematologist, it was determined that because my clot was a provoked clot and I have an active lifestyle, I was more at risk of bleeding being on warfarin than having another blood clot. Eight years later, in February 2023, I developed a second DVT, but in my left leg this time. However, I didn’t have the excruciating pain like last time, which would have tipped me off. I did notice that I was losing my breath when climbing stairs or riding my bike, but I would recover quickly. I figured I was in my late 50s and just feeling my age. What finally scared me to the ER was when I was at a high school wrestling tournament two hours away from my home and I was unable to catch my breath walking from the car to the arena and then up stadium stairs to my seat. I told my buddy we need to leave. We drove two hours home, I immediately went to ER, and was diagnosed with a saddle PE and admitted to hospital. In terms of family history, my daughter was also diagnosed with factor V Leiden. This experience has taught me that as I get older, it’s important to listen and react to my body." Attention, women: Have you ever been dismissed, your medical concerns downplayed, or felt as if you’re not taken seriously when you describe your symptoms in a healthcare setting? This is medical gaslighting, and it’s a far more common experience for women than men. In fact, many female blood clot patients report being misdiagnosed or sent home without an exam because healthcare professionals dismissed their concerns, which can result in life-threatening complications. This will be one of the many topics that we’ll discuss during our next PEP Talk in recognition of Women’s Health Month on Tuesday, May 14 at 7 p.m. Other topics will include Opill, the new estrogen free over-the-counter oral contraceptive; women’s mental health after a blood clot diagnosis; heavy menstrual bleeding on anticoagulants; new discussions around the safety of hormone replacement therapy for individuals with a history of blood clots; and much more. Dr. Anna Parks, assistant professor at the University of Utah Division of Hematology and a member of NBCA’s Council of Emerging Researchers in Thrombosis, will serve as our medical expert. "In November of 2022, I was driving home from work when out of nowhere, my heart started hammering and went out of rhythm. I made it home and told my partner that I wasn’t okay and needed to go to the ER immediately. We got as far as the local urgent care where I told him to stop. They called me an ambulance as I was experiencing atrial fibrillation, which had never happened before. The next morning, my heart slipped back into rhythm and all was well. No formal diagnosis or reason was given, just an order to check in with a cardiologist. Four days later, I woke up at home and couldn’t breathe. I was weak and felt like I was going to pass out. There was no pain, so I wasn’t sure what was happening. I just felt like I was suffocating and I was terrified. We drove back to the same local ER. They ran some tests as I waited there for six hours. When the doctor did come back, they told me I was having a heart attack and that they were transferring me to another hospital. Once at the new hospital, a very young doctor came in. He took a good look at my charts and then at me, and said, 'You’re NOT having a heart attack.' He sent me for an immediate CT scan where they found sub-massive bilateral pulmonary emboli, which had caused right heart strain. I was treated with heparin in the hospital and was there for a week. Luckily they did not find any DVTs, and I was finally cleared to leave and was released on an oral anticoagulant. After further genetic testing, no direct cause for my clots was ever found. My pulmonologist is a firm believer that my atrial fibrillation was caused by the clots and not vice versa, as they were too extensive and established. Now I am a lifer on oral anticoagulants, which I am okay with. I am thankful every day that my second doctor was so well-trained in diagnosing and treating blood clots. I might not be here to tell the story otherwise." In cases where the #DeepVeinThrombosis is widespread, such as extending to the thigh and pelvic veins, a combination of mechanical devices and specific medications may be required to dissolve the blood clots. This procedure, known as thrombolysis, is typically performed within two weeks of the DVT diagnosis and is minimally invasive. Thrombolysis is used as a preventative measure against potential long-term complications of DVT, such as Post-Thrombotic Syndrome (PTS) and venous ulcers in the limbs. Additional treatments may involve the placement of stents to maintain the openness of compressed veins. At the Vascular and Interventional Centre, we are committed to the continuous advancement to diagnose and treat vascular conditions like Deep Vein Thrombosis. The Wall Street Journal recently reported on the new class of anticoagulants currently under development that promise to prevent blood clots without putting patients at risk of bleeding. “At least a half-dozen experimental blood thinners are in development that inhibit a protein called factor XI, one of several blood factors that regulate how the body forms clots,” the article says. While the research sounds promising, it may take some time before these drugs are readily available. Clinical trials that are now underway will answer important questions about clinical effectiveness and economic potential of the new drugs. Success in these trials could revolutionize the management of VTE by offering safer and more effective alternatives to existing medications. #stoptheclot #bloodthinners #anticoagulanttherapy

On October 25, 2017, Cydney Cobb’s 21-year-old daughter Madison died suddenly of a massive pulmonary embolism. Since then, every March during Blood Clot Awareness Month, Cydney organizes a small walk in her memory, the “March for Madison,” to raise funds and spread awareness. This year the walk was held on March 30 and raised over $500, enough to sponsor an NBCA Thrombassador for an entire year. “Madison did have all the classic signs and symptoms of a pulmonary embolism,” Cydney said. “She saw her doctor the day preceding, and was unfortunately misdiagnosed. If we had known her risk factors and the signs and symptoms, her death could have been prevented. Though I have suffered the loss of my child, I will continue to advocate all of my days in hopes my efforts could potentially save someone else’s.” Thank you, Cydney and family, for your loving remembrance of Madison, your generosity, and your selfless dedication to spreading life-saving blood clot awareness. #stoptheclot #marchformadison #bloodclots #bloodclotadvocacy #bloodclotawareness #fatalpe #pulmonaryembolism

"My younger sister Marsha had many blood clots over the years. She found out that she had protein S deficiency shortly after our father died in 1998. She had veins that were painful and found a doctor who was willing to strip them (phlebectomy). Marsha asked him about her history with clots. The doctor told her not to worry and after the surgery she would no longer have clots. So, she had the surgery. She came home and felt fine. She sent me an email that all was good. Shortly after reading the email, I had a call from another sister that Marsha was being life-flighted to a large hospital. I called around and finally managed to talk to my mother. She was sobbing and told me Marsha never made the flight. She had coded four times in the ambulance and passed away. It turns out that she had multiple pulmonary emboli in both lungs due to the surgery releasing them from her legs. She left behind two young adult children and three grandchildren. Marsha was only 47. Marsha’s son also has protein S deficiency and has had a DVT and PE. I have protein S deficiency, as do my son and daughter. My daughter has had a PE and my son has had a DVT and both are on blood thinners. I worry about my grandchildren potentially having problems. I am cautious about what I do, but the worry is always there. If your family has a history of clotting disorders, please get tested yourself. If you experience any of the signs of a clot get to the doctor immediately. Don't wait until it is too late." * Today, Anna Frutiger’s sorority, Zeta Alpha Pi at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, is hosting their annual 5K Color Run to benefit the National Blood Clot Alliance in memory of Anna.* "Anna embodied brains, beauty, compassion, and athleticism, and seemed the picture of health while she was living her dream of becoming a dentist. No one expected that a blood clot would end her life, and it seemed beyond belief that Anna died on May 20, 2010 from a pulmonary embolism (PE) due to an undiagnosed deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a month after her 23rd birthday. Anna felt pain behind her knee and in her calf four months before she died and attributed it to her half marathon training. Her friends at dental school noted that she limped, and Anna became short of breath when she ran. Anna saw an orthopedic surgeon who found no injury to suggest a muscle pull. After a thorough physical and review of her medical history, her doctor suspected a blood clot in her lower leg. Anna’s only known risk factor was that she was taking a third generation birth control pill. Results of an ultrasound/Doppler of her leg were negative for DVT. At a follow-up three weeks later, her leg was normal shape and size, and she no longer felt any leg pain. As a result, her doctor discharged her. After her first-year finals at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine, Anna traveled quite a bit. She flew for six hours over two consecutive weekends, then went to see friends in New York City the next two weekends, which involved an eight hour bus trip with one 10-minute stop. Anna complained of not being able to breathe easily when she carried groceries up to her apartment right after the bus trip. She told her parents that her symptoms were probably stress–related...." Blood, the journal of the American Society of Hematology, published a paper in its April edition on the new class of anticoagulants currently under development that seek to prevent blood clots without putting patients at risk of bleeding. This new class of anticoagulants inhibit a protein called factor XI, one of the several blood factors that regulates how the body forms clots. The body generates two types of clots — good ones that stop bleeding caused by external injuries, and bad ones that develop inside veins and arteries. Factor XI is involved in the formation of bad blood clots, or thrombosis. But researchers now believe that factor XI, unlike other blood factors, plays a minimal role in forming the good clots that stop bleeding. This suggests that drugs against it could prevent the bad clots without significantly disrupting the process that causes good clots, minimizing the bleeding risk associated with anticoagulants. "I had my beautiful baby boy on August 26, 2023. I had a low-risk pregnancy and a water birth with no complications. At 2.5 weeks postpartum, I began to get a headache that I assumed was from sleep deprivation. As a migraine sufferer, I am used to severe headaches and had not been on my preventative medication for 12 months. I contacted my GP who advised it was probably a migraine. However, my midwife saved my life when the next day she came to see me and insisted I go to Maternity Triage to get seen ASAP, and I was then able to take my newborn with me. They quickly saw me and got me scanned. While I was feeding my newborn I was told I had an extensive blood clot in my brain known as a cerebral venous sinus thrombosis or CVST. I asked if I was going to die, to which they said they caught it just in time and started me on high-dose blood thinners. The whole experience was very traumatic. I was low risk and had no clotting disorders, so the likelihood of this happening to me was so slim. I was back in the hospital a month later with worsening symptoms but, luckily, they saw that the clot had started to disperse. I was then on blood thinners for three months before having a clear CT scan. I am now six months post-CVST and still suffer from migraines as well as intracranial tension, sight issues, and medical PTSD. I am hoping my story will urge more women to advocate for themselves during pregnancy and the postpartum period. If it wasn’t for my midwife, I wouldn’t be here today." "I was at the Walmart self-checkout. I had been feeling sore and had a hard time catching my breath all day, and I collapsed in the self-checkout. I came to, and people were standing over me. I say I'm all right, but my pain is getting progressively worse. I ended up driving myself to the emergency room. I had been to the emergency room a few weeks prior for swollen feet because it did not seem right. They told me it was 'salt intake.' When I came back, they remembered me and knew it was more serious. They found that I had a saddle pulmonary embolism and a clot still in my leg. I was later diagnosed with factor V Leiden, a blood clotting disorder. In terms of risk factors, I had been sick the week before and I slept an entire weekend and barely moved. I had symptoms like COVID but never took a test. Now I take blood thinners daily. I am an avid runner, but nowhere near the mile time I was at before all this happened. I’ve learned to listen to my body. Also, just because people work in a hospital, doesn’t mean they know how you’re feeling. You know your body best. ** During Black Maternal Health Week, we’re elevating stories of Black women who experienced blood clots during pregnancy or postpartum. ** "During my first pregnancy, I had been feeling faint. Soon after, I started getting headaches with flashing black dots in my eyes. My midwife had told me that my blood pressure was higher than it should be, and that if I got any painful headaches and started seeing black dots, I should go straight to the hospital, so I did. It turns out I had pre-eclampsia — a potentially dangerous pregnancy complication characterized by high blood pressure — and needed to be induced. I was upset, but glad I had answers. The day before my induction, I woke up gasping for breath. I thought this may have been from the baby getting bigger, and I thought it was normal to be short of breath during pregnancy. I knew there was a problem, though, when I went to my mother’s house that evening, as she was making me a lovely roast that I had requested as my last meal before giving birth But I couldn’t even eat. I gasped for breath with every mouthful, and my chest felt extremely tight. My partner took me to the hospital straight away. I was seen three hours later and told everything looked fine. They offered me a bed, as I was heavily pregnant and due to be induced in the morning. I was lying in bed crying and gasping telling the staff I could not breathe. I was told that I was fine, I just needed to sleep. Finally, the next day, I was taken for a scan where blood clots were found in my lungs, or pulmonary emboli. I blocked this out after I gave birth. I was too scared and anxious to face it at the time. It was a terrifying pregnancy and birth journey, but I am ready to face it now. If you’re feeling short of breath, lightheaded, faint, dizzy, or experience any chest pain, please go to get checked out. If you know something within yourself is not okay and they have not done the full checks, please don’t take 'you’re fine' as an answer." "My daughter Kaylie passed away at the age of 21 from bilateral pulmonary emboli that had gone undiagnosed even though she had been to the doctor just three weeks prior to her death. Her symptoms were severe upper back pain near her shoulder, shortness of breath, and rapid heart rate. Unfortunately, she did not get to see her primary provider, and her symptoms were quickly dismissed as muscle strain and anxiety. No testing was performed and she was given a muscle relaxant for the pain. I was with her that day and we both pleaded for something to be evaluated as this was the third episode like this in recent months and it just did not feel right. We were told to talk to her primary about it. We left feeling unheard and completely dismissed and we both knew something was not right. Three weeks later, she woke up feeling nauseous and began vomiting. We thought she had picked up a stomach bug, but within the hour, her breathing became very labored. I asked if she needed to go to the emergency room, and she said yes. We were preparing to leave the house, and the next thing I knew, she was face down on the floor. I immediately called 9-1-1, but it was too late. I performed CPR and they did all they could do once they arrived, but she was gone. If only the doctor who saw Kaylie three weeks earlier had listened to us and had run some tests, just maybe my daughter would still be alive today. I went to urgent care but they sent me home and told me to continue to take Tylenol, ice, and elevate. One day I woke up and couldn’t walk on the leg at all, I even had to use a cane. I went for another medical opinion and was immediately sent to the emergency room, where they diagnosed me with deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and was admitted. They told me that because I was pregnant, I’d have to give myself injections twice a day to treat the clot. I was terrified, but here I am months later, thankful and still injecting myself twice a day. Many people don’t know that the risk of DVT increases when pregnant. My advice to others is to be persistent in seeking medical attention when something doesn’t feel right." Well today is my 5th Clotiversary. This year is different for me. Usually the few weeks leading up to it will hit me the day is coming up and it will all I will be thinking about. Having a pulmonary embolism at the age of 30 wasn’t on my plans in my life. To this day and forever to go I don’t know how it all came to be. I have my assumptions and that’s about it. Even the doctors and surgeon had a hard time figuring why it happened. With a near death experience and having only 13 hours left it’s a lot to unpack. This year though I didn’t really think about it. In a way I kind of forgot about it. It just kind of crept up on me and I told myself oh yeah that’s coming up. Maybe I’m at the point where the healing process of that day is on an even more positive mend. The last few years I’ve been living my life doing as much to make it memorable. For years I’ve been saying things that I wanted to do and just never did them. Now I’m doing the opposite and working on doing the things that I want to do and accomplish. Having something like my clot is horrible to have happen on anyone, but it also got me thinking about many things. It’s been a long road and it will always be something that will never go away but in the end I’m living the best life that I can have and that’s what’s important. Please be aware of blood clots. Know the signs and follow pages like @bloodclotrecoverynetwork and @stoptheclot for more information and what to do if you or someone you know has gone through something like that. #clotiversary #bloodclot #pulmonaryembolism #anniversary #stoptheclot #reflection #bloodclotsurvivor #pulmonaryembolismsurvivor

"I had knee surgery and was six weeks post-op, so I had no worries about clots. I was also on birth control, though. I stretched one night and felt excruciating pain in my left rib. I could barely move. I managed to get to a hospital and was told it was costochondritis — inflammation of the cartilage connecting the ribs to the sternum — and anxiety. They gave me an anti-inflammatory medication and told me I’d be good. Two days later, I could barely breathe. My heart was racing. I felt like I was going to pass out from short walks to the bathroom. I went back to the ER. The doctor told me to calm down and that I was having an anxiety attack. My husband insisted that this was worse, and they then did a CT scan and found a 'small' clot in my left lung. They sent me home with rivaroxaban. Less than a week later, I was back in the hospital. I thought I was having a heart attack this time. They did an immediate x-ray, where they found my pulmonary embolism had led to fluid buildup in my pleural sack. I had fluid from abdomen to collarbone and a collapsed lung. My oxygen levels were normal and the only PE symptoms were ones that mimicked anxiety, so it was almost overlooked. I almost died and coded twice in my one week hospital stay. Two thoracentesis (a procedure to remove fluid from around the lungs using a needle), a chest tube, and just shy of three gallons of fluid removed from my chest, and I am still reeling from this four years later. I live with anxiety that the next one may be the one that kills me, because the next doctor may also not believe me. Through all of this, I’ve also learned to enjoy each day and embrace the silliness in life, which is why I chose this picture! Trust your body. For me, it felt like a rod through my chest when it happened, and I knew something was very wrong. Don’t let anyone, especially doctors, gaslight you into dying like I almost did."
