Fantastic Friday: We love working with other groups as we build community and momentum for all our streets, crossings, paths and public places to be and feel safe, comfortable and convenient for everyone. Last night's community forum saw the launch of a key election policy platform. The local disability community groups' Shared Election Platform for Disability in regard to Planning, Climate and Transport. This platform offers non-partisan priorities for the information of voters and candidates in the coming ACT election. It covers many of the issues we cover, and that is why we were happy to join other community groups to endorse it. The document says: 'We offer non-partisan priorities for the information of voters and candidates in the coming ACT election. 'These represent our shared priorities for the election and candidates are also encouraged to speak to individual Disabled Peoples Organisations and representative bodies about our specific and detailed priorities.' The key asks open with 'In the coming ACT election, we ask candidates to commit to the following actions, decisions and investments to ensure Canberra is a well-planned and accessible city where people with disability can comfortably navigate a changing urban realm amidst responses to climate change that mitigate risks and ensure a just transition.' Parents often start play streets because they know that it will be brilliant for their children to meet and play with other local children. And sometimes, residents without children might initially feel like the play street isn't for them. But what we hear from organisers and residents, again and again, is that play streets can bring the whole street community together. Neighbours can get involved by baking a cake, or putting on a high-vis and stewarding the road closure, or just sitting on their front wall with a cuppa and having a natter. Play streets are for everyone, and everyone benefits from feeling like they're part of a friendly community. As part of my visit to NYC I had the chance to visit @34_ave Open Streets with community leader and co-founder Jim Burke. A 26-block stretch of 34th Avenue — 1.3 miles in total — in Jackson Heights is closed off to vehicular traffic from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day. The plan was first put into action in May 2020, near the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. After initial stumbles with the city led installation, a coalition of more than 100 neighborhood volunteers led an effort to reclaim this space for people on foot and bike. The open street provides a safe thoroughfare for thousands of children walking to and from seven schools along 34th Avenue. “It just brought joy to the neighborhood, and it’s been transformative,” said Nuala O’Doherty-Naranjo, Burke’s fellow Coalition co-founder. The group offers programming 7 days a week. 77% of residents are in favor of permanent bike and pedestrian improvements on 34th Avenue. I’ve had one bad near miss on my bike. I kept cycling, but the whole way to Richmond Library, where I was due for a Meet the Mayor session, I was very aware that I’d been about a millisecond from a car door knocking me under the ute that was at my back wheel. Gruesomely squished Sophie. It was on this street. Langridge Street. That was a couple of years ago, but it’s finally made the list of top priority routes to be improved in the @cityofyarra. Included in the Transport Action Plan in March, and now up for funding for design work for protected bike lanes in the draft annual budget. Awkward selfie to say hello out there and good bye crutches and air cast. I’m healing and I’m wearing two shoes. I’m standing, and walking a little better each day thanks to physical therapy and the 35cm rod holding my right tibia together from my ankle to my knee. I’m extremely grateful for the medical I have received and simultaneously horrified for the many many people out there who need it and can’t get it. I have a limp and have to walk very slowly - on smooth even surfaces only. I feel vulnerable. Cars move fast and I cross the street slow. I feel it acutely and intimately the way our streets and human made world are made for fast moving able bodied adults. Thank you to the stranger who patiently waited for me in their car while I hobbled across the street yesterday. I miss many of ways of being in my body, both the routine and the joyful feelings movement that brought me joy. I hope a return to dancing and running is my future. The emotions are as hard as the physical challenges. Knitting, painting and playing guitar are keeping me afloat. So are friendly warm faces. Amazingly, despite my limitations, I can ride a bike now and it is incredibly freeing to forget it all for a moment. I’m also excited to share I will be stepping on the stage again with @lizdraperbass at @icehousempls Mon April 29th 8p. There's enough underused and inefficient space on West 72nd Street to transform it into THIS! Right now the street's potential is stifled by car-centric infrastructure, even though the majority of New Yorkers using 72nd are pedestrians, bus riders, and cyclists. It's time for wider sidewalks, more frequent crossings, space for many modes of transit, and a focus on sustainability. 📨 Send a letter to elected officials and DOT urging them to prioritize a bold redesign of West 72nd Street as a “complete street” connecting Central Park and Riverside Park.

With congestion pricing around the corner, the city should focus on remaking our streets to be safer for our most vulnerable users, and that includes young New Yorkers. DOT already has an Open Streets: Schools program meant to create car-free space near schools across the city. Now that streets in the congestion zone will have fewer cars, the city should get proactive about designating these school streets to give students space to talk, meet, arrival, leave, and learn.
