David Bowles' novel, "The Prince and the Coyote," delves into the life of Nezahualcoyotl, the legendary Aztec ruler, poet, and philosopher -- notably featured on Mexico's 100 peso bill! The 15-year-old crown prince, raised amidst an enduring feud between the Kingdoms of Mexico and Acolhuacan, faces upheaval when a power struggle claims his father's life, forcing his family into exile. Forced to flee, the prince forms an unexpected alliance with a coyote, embarking on an adventure through the wilderness. But his journey back to the throne - fraught with war, romance, politics, and betrayal - is far from simple. The narrative seamlessly blends poetry and prose, incorporating translated verses by Nezahualcoyotl himself. The story is adorned with traditional illustrations by Amanda Mijangos, creating a rich exploration of heritage, history, and Indigenous identity - including insights into pre-Columbian gender identity and language. #teenteamtuesday #vancouverpubliclibrary #teensatvpl #davidbowles #amandamijangos #indigenousfiction #yafiction

Unfortunately, on the night of her planned escape - Ross' mom is kidnapped. Desperate for ransome money, Ross accepts an invitation from an underground thieving competition. Facing cunning and cutthroat competitors, and increasingly treacherous trials, Ross' skills are tested to the extreme. Can she outwit, outmaneuver, and outplay her opponents to win the game? Since spooky season is fast approaching, our book recommendation for this #teenteamtuesday offers an especially eerie read: The Wicked Unseen by Gigi Griffis! A few things to love about The Wicked Unseen: 🖤 The protagonist, Audre, a goth misfit obsessed with horror movies 🖤 Her supportive parents, a mortician and an Occult-expert academic 🖤 The 90s energy (it’s set in 1996, in a small town gripped by “Satanic Panic”) 🖤 Audre’s inconvenient crush on Elle, the preacher’s daughter 🖤 A mystery revolving around Halloween night 🖤 Queer teens taking matters into their own hands when the adults fail them It’s a heart-pounding novel for fans of mystery and horror, with lots of say about extremism and injustice. The Wicked Unseen and other thrilling reads are included on our “High Stakes, Low Barrier” booklist – featuring page-turners with exciting plots that are also quick and easy to read. Today for #teenteamtuesday, a graphic novel fable that's perfect for a rainy, gloomy day: "The Well" by Jake Wyatt and Choo. Lizzy's parents may have been spellcasters and monster hunters, but she's content to live a simpler life - helping her grandfather, making enough money to get by, and maybe flirting with the woman who works the ferry. But when she steals three coins from a wishing well, she unknowingly enters a contract to make three wishes come true. Good day! This book cover is a perfect colour match for my fit! How about that? It is also a gripping post-apocalyptic survival story. Fast forward 50 years from now. It is understood globally that a volcano is going to erupt and destroy the Earth’s atmosphere. World leaders have agreed to collectively rebuild on another planet and preparations are underway in a race against time. While children of the Global Fleet Planning Commission are touring a launch site in California the volcano unexpectedly erupts. The group of 50 multinational teens is forced to launch on an unfinished ship, barely stocked with food and necessities. As the teens form a small leadership council to take charge of operations they struggle to work together across national and cultural divides. Can they avoid repeating the mistakes of their parents? Their survival and the future of the human race depends on it. No pressure! #teenteamtuesday #teensatvpl #vancouverpubliclibrary #yareads #yafiction #yalit #sciencefiction #scifi #ya #igreads #bookstagram #readingcommunity #rileyredgate #aloneouthere

If you’re looking for an edge-of-your-seat thriller, look no further. #darkroometiquette will take you to some intensely uncomfortable places. Sixteen-year-old spoiled and entitled Sayers Wayte is a teen with everything until he is kidnapped and locked inside a windowless room. Divided into three sections, the novel takes us through the time before, during, and after the kidnapping. This is a fantastic read that will give you all the feels — anger, fear, sadness, horror! #teenteamtuesday #teensatvpl #vancouverpubliclibrary #yareads #yafiction #yalit #psychologicalthriller #ya #igreads #bookstagram #readingcommunity #robinroe #alistofcages

It's not too early for a summer rom-com, is it? In Camp by L.C. Rosen, Randy Kappelhoff is auditioning for his biggest role yet: Hudson Aaronson-Lim's boyfriend. The only problem is that Hudson likes masc boys, and Randy is anything but. Everyone says not to change yourself for someone else, but when Randy shows up at Camp Outland this year, he's ready. He's newly in shape, has figured how to be okay at sports, and has been studying how to walk, talk and dress like a straight dude. Cute AF? Check. Wacky hijinx? Check. Cabin singalongs? Check! #teenteamtuesday #teensatvpl #ownvoices #summerlove #queerbooks #gaylove @levacrosen

It’s time again for #teenteamtuesday, when Teen Services staff recommends a YA book we’ve been enjoying! 😃 What do you get when you combine office comedy, animal fun-facts, and all-powerful celestial beings? The perfectly weird and extremely funny Heaven’s Design Team! This manga series (with art by Tarako and writing by Hebi-Sou and Tsuta Suzuki) follows an eccentric team of designers and engineers who are tasked by “The Client” with creating animals for earth - with personality clashes and challenging requests resulting in some pretty strange creations being green-lit! An “encyclopedia” section of each chapter clarifies which creature characteristics made it into the real world. The first six volumes are available now at VPL! Check them out and begin annoying your loved ones with bizarre animal facts – such as: Did you know elephants hear better with their feet than with their ears? Did you know some jellyfish are functionally immortal? Did you know tarsiers have two tongues, and no one’s sure why?? #vancouverpubliclibrary #teensatVPL #manga #heavensdesignteam #teenteamtuesdays

Hello and welcome to this rainy edition of #teenteamtuesdays, where VPL staff highlight a YA book that we’re excited about. This week we bring you the latest and greatest from @randi_pink, We Are the Scribes. In the wake of a family tragedy, Ruth stops writing and soon after begins receiving strange letters like parchment scrolls from the ghost of Harriet Jacobs (1813-1897), author of Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl. The scrolls bear a seal that says “We Are the Scribes”, and encourage Ruth to find her voice and continue writing. Pink draws strong parallels between Ruth’s present-day struggles with anti-black oppression and Harriet’s struggles chronicled in her autobiography. We Are the Scribes celebrates the power of words to heal, to unite, to honor, to raise awareness, to fight for justice. #teensatvpl #vancouverpubliclibrary # teenteamtuesday # yahistoricalfiction #blackhistorymonth #wearethescribes #bookstagram #yareads #yafiction #readingcommunity
