Hey everyone! It's #teenteamtuesday! I really enjoyed @khodidill's "STAY UP: racism, resistance and reclaiming black freedom." It's a mix of Dill's reflections on growing up Black in Saskatchewan and info on colonialism and oppression. It's brutally honest and some stories hit hard, but Dill finds a gentle way to encourage allyship and educate us in this primer on anti-racism. I originally picked this up due to the gorgeous cover - designed by @stylostarr. The images inside this book - mostly photo collages - are equally as stunning!

David Bowles' novel, "The Prince and the Coyote," delves into the life of Nezahualcoyotl, the legendary Aztec ruler, poet, and philosopher -- notably featured on Mexico's 100 peso bill! The 15-year-old crown prince, raised amidst an enduring feud between the Kingdoms of Mexico and Acolhuacan, faces upheaval when a power struggle claims his father's life, forcing his family into exile. Forced to flee, the prince forms an unexpected alliance with a coyote, embarking on an adventure through the wilderness. But his journey back to the throne - fraught with war, romance, politics, and betrayal - is far from simple. The narrative seamlessly blends poetry and prose, incorporating translated verses by Nezahualcoyotl himself. The story is adorned with traditional illustrations by Amanda Mijangos, creating a rich exploration of heritage, history, and Indigenous identity - including insights into pre-Columbian gender identity and language. #teenteamtuesday #vancouverpubliclibrary #teensatvpl #davidbowles #amandamijangos #indigenousfiction #yafiction

Nobody does faeries like Holly Black! We return to Elfhame eight years after the events of the Cruel Prince trilogy, this time to follow an older Oak and a wilder Wren as they reluctantly team up to save the faerie courts from a cruel and vicious tyrant. Black excels at depicting the twisting, turning, benevolent yet manipulative natures of folklore Fae which makes for a constantly surprising and delightful read. The plot starts off slow but builds steadily to high stakes and a tense cliffhanger ending. The second book of the duology will be released in February 2024. #thestolenheir #hollyblack #teenteamtuesday

Is the image on the cover of Victory, Stand! familiar to you? It's a recreation of the moment at the 1968 Olmpics when Black Americans Tommie Smith (gold medal) and John Carlos (bronze medal) raised their fists on the podium during the U.S. national anthem to protest racial injustice in America. This book tells the story of all of the moments that led up to that moment: the training, the organizing, the meetings and more. Tommie Smith shows how much he and other Black athletes struggled to be treated with respect-- even while winning world records--and the way they worked together to make change for athletes that came after them and oppressed people around the world. Plus, some very fantastic sprint scenes! #TommieSmith #TeenTeamTuesday #GraphicMemoir #Justice

In the third and final chapter of the Daevabad Trilogy, Nahri, Ali, and Dara are forced to confront family secrets and centuries-old lies as they battle for the city of Daevabad. The POV switches between the three but it is entirely necessary as each character goes through vastly different journeys, and the information uncovered by each impacts the final outcome of the story. The complex politics involved in this beautiful constructed world require a deft hand to tie up in a satisfying manner, and in this the author delivers spectacularly. #teenteamtuesday #vancouverpubliclibrary #sachakraborty #instareads

Heartstopper Volume 1 is the pick-me-up graphic novel you need right now to reaffirm your faith in humanity. Also as a romance, it will have you twisting on the edge of your seat going, Will they? Won’t they? Right up to the last page! In these Orwellian times where gritty shows and books abound, Heartstopper is a gentle escape into a story about two really sweet boys who are falling in love. Alice Oseman’s illustration style is simple and spare while capturing all the subtle facial expressions and body language of characters who are trying hard to contain their feels. Sheetal Mistry has never stopped missing her mother, a star who returned to her constellation when Sheetal was 8 years old. When Sheetal accidentally injures her father with starfire, her only hope is to follow her mother into the heavens and ask for help. But the Celestial Court is full of surprises and secrets, and Sheetal will have to find some way to honor the magic of both her mortal and celestial halves in order to save her father and maintain a relationship with her mother. Thakrar cleverly introduces the reader to Hindu mythology by making the stories a part of Sheetal's starry family history, and through the dark and light sides of the myths explores the idea of divine inspiration and what happens when the mortal and divine world's intertwine. #teensatvpl #vancouverpubliclibrary #teenteamtuesday #stardaughter #shvetathakrar #instaread

Sia Martinez and the Moonlit Beginning of Everything by @raquelvasquezgilliland_poet is a beautifully tender read that tackles immigration, family, grief, first loves, friendships, and more, all while defying genres. It is a blend of #contemporaryya and #scifi with hints of #folklore that set up this coming of age novel perfectly. On its surface, the novel centres around Mexican-American teen Sia Martinez as she navigates through her grief after her mother is deported by ICE. But the novel goes deep and looks at the complexities of each character and how to heal in the face of trauma. Oh and there’s aliens 👽.   It’s beautifully poetic and the most unique thing I’ve read this year. . . . . . #teensatvpl #vancouverpubliclibrary #teenteamtuesday #yafiction #yareads #yabooks #teenfiction #teenreads #yascifi #igreads #bookstagram

Barbara Gordon is shot, sustains a spinal injury, and ends up at Arkham Centre for Independence, a creepy mansion filled with secrets. She makes friends (despite her initial and understandable avoidance at the beginning), strengthens her body, learns to use her wheelchair so well that she sneaks around and picks locks at night, and uses her hacking skills to outwit the staff. The most satisfying scene comes towards the end - but I won't tell you what it is! Check out Oracle Code by @mariekeyn, drawn by @manuelcomicart. Lobizona is the story of Manu, and undocumented Argentine girl living in Miami with her mom and an older woman who is like a grandmother to her. To keep safe from deportation, the family tries to be invisible as possible, which is hard when Manu has irises that shine like the sun and pupils shaped like stars. When ICE comes for her mom, Manu learns more about herself than she bargained for. Well last night I finished reading the graphic novel DANCING AT THE PITY PARTY by @tylerfeder, published by @penguinteen. Love the title, love the cover, love the story, love the illustrations. Gotta lotta love for this book! I greatly admire Feder’s candidness in letting readers into the deeply tragic loss of her mother - they were REALLY close (sob!) - at the age of 19. When you read this book you will travel through Feder’s entire life. She describes her childhood, what her mom was like, the period of her mom’s illness and death, the funeral, how shocking it is that the world keeps turning and life marches on, how awkward people were with her afterwards. There is a hilarious do’s and don’ts section on how to behave toward a friend who is grieving! Feder tells her story with honesty, kindness and gentle humour. I was very surprised to find that a book about death could be so full of joy and hope - who knew? I just want to say thank you to @tylerfeder for taking readers on this journey with her and for making me feel like there is life after personal tragedy. It gives me hope! #teenteamtuesday #teensatvpl #vancouverpubliclibrary #dancingatthepityparty #penguinteen #tylerfeder

The Fascinators is a winsome contemporary LGBTQ+ coming of age story with a touch of magic woven throughout. Sam, James, and Delia are the Fascinators, best friends and the only members of their school’s magic club. In classic contemporary YA form, everything starts to fall apart in their last year of high school: unspoken feelings, diverging pursuits, uncertainty about the future, and of course, new people in their lives that change the group dynamic. There is a secondary plot that revolves trying to save themselves from a dark magic cult, but the primary focus is on the twists and turns in their everyday lives and the all too real magic of friendship. #teensatvpl #vancouverpubliclibrary #teenteamtuesday #thefascinators #andreweliopulos #instareads

"Art and protest will forever be bound together. And the beautiful thing about art, like activism, is that it allows us space to be curious and learn. Sharing art has helped me learn how to make my voice heard and ask better questions." In This Is What I Know About Art, Kimberly Drew describes what inspired her to get into the art world, start the Tumblr blog called Black Contemporary Art, become the social media manager for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and set out on her own as a curator, writer, and activist. When Grace runs away out west to escape her conscription into the Confederate army, she dreams of being an actor in San Francisco's theatre scene. When her stagecoach is robbed by the mysterious Ghost Hawk, she is kidnapped. But Ghost Hawk and Grace hit it off and soon Grace is using her acting skills in the greatest heist of all--one that they hope will prevent the Confederate Army from invading New Mexico. I love that Melanie Gillman follows up this beautiful story with footnotes about it's historical context. The records we have of trans people in history may be small, but they exist, and there were certainly more living quiet lives. (Psst! Good thing school's out, because this graphic novel is a gateway to a world you won't want to leave. In Noughts and Crosses, black Crosses dominate a society built on the African colonization and slavery of the white noughts. Sephy's the daughter of one of the most powerful men in the country, and Callum is the son of the maid: caught in a net of racial tension, what are their options for love and a future? As the sudden ruler of an unstable kingdom, unsure if she can even trust her own family, Hesina must commit acts of treason in order to set things right. She turns to the forbidden magic of a soothsayer and the criminal wiles of a clever investigator to uncover the truth of her father’s murder. Only then will she be able to rule with conviction. "I'm struck by the impermanence of it all. You expect certain things to always be there, like the bakery on the corner, or the boy you grew up with. But when the very ground can eat you up without warning, what's to say the ocean won't dry up? Or the stars won't suddenly shut off? Nothing is forever." After the destructive 1906 San Francisco earthquake strikes, fifteen-year-old Mercy Wong organizes the survivors of her elite boarding school in order to survive.
