Our health system is built to be reactive. Or at least in our experience. You see, they’ve watched Harper’s hips move out of their socket from 30% to 70% in 6 months before considering to do anything about it. We are now four surgeries deep with no end in sight. They’ve watched Harper scoliosis go from 11% to 65% after I begged for an X-ray. We now wait for spinal surgery instead of bracing her earlier. We’ve been watching Harper not grow in both weight and height for a while now - 21 months to be exact. When I addressed this in December to our neuromuscular team, we were told to go see a different doctor. Instead of having an investigation as to why her figure is so petite, we’ve been URGENTLY scheduled for a surgically implanted feeding tube. Seems like an invasive step to me knowing that nothing prior has been done about it. And here’s why I don’t feel good about putting a hole into my child’s stomach: 1. Has there been any blood work done to date? Only when she’s sick. But there’s been no follow up on any of her other levels. 2. Has there been a dietician following us? We haven’t seen one in four years. 3. Is there a lack of food intake? As a whole, I don’t believe so but only two pages of food logs were reviewed so who knows. 4. Has there been any investigation into a potential gut issues? Nope. 5. Did I get a referral to endocrine? I do not, no. 6. Did it seem like when I make it one of my top concerns in December, a calorie deficit was as immediately blamed and a feeding tube was the first thing pushed? It did feel like that, yeah. I felt pressured to give my consent for her 14th surgery. I’m not against a feeding tube overall, but I am against it right now until I know that putting a tube in her abdominal wall will be THE solution. Do I think she MIGHT need one for supplementary calories? Maybe. Potentially. I’m not discounting the importance of a feeding tube to some people. But it was the only option. Another surgery was the ONLY solution. Everything I do... I do it for you. When I started this hair biz I *thought* it was for the kids... it was, it is.... but when it got down to it I was doing it for YOU. I was doing it to sleep in on the weekends and to wake up to fresh made coffee and your famous breakfasts that I only experienced every other holiday off. I jumped in because I was sick of you getting the last little bit of energy I had after #thatmedicallife and the kids drained me. I started so we could snuggle in the afternoon as the kids napped. I did it so we could have vacations together instead of waiting another SIX years before treating ourselves. Just a girl. And her side kick, the suction machine. 😆 She tells me now when she needs a suction, and would probably do it herself if I let her. This machine comes everywhere with us. On walks, in the car, while she plays, and while she sleeps. Some days she only needs a suction every hour, and other days it is every 5-10minutes. She’s not bothered by it at all. In fact, before this got turned on here, she asked for her nose to be suctioned. Strange, I know. It has been an extension of her body since day one, however. So there is nothing strange about it to her. I used to be self conscious about it in public, it is loud and obvious...there’s no way to be discreet about turning on an engine and putting a catheter down your child’s throat. I don’t think about it anymore though. It is what it is. And people will stare. Or they will look away trying to be “polite.” Or perhaps they look away because they are grossed out by it. Whatever. 🤷🏼♀️ The occasional person will just ask, about the Trach or the machine, and I am more than happy to explain what it’s all for and how it works. I’m not sure how I would have been, as a bystander, before all of this. Probably the shy, look away type. So I try not to take any persons reaction personally, or too seriously. Most people don’t mean any harm in how they react to what they don’t know, they just don’t know what an appropriate reaction is. And I’m not sure I know either. Questions though, I have learnt to appreciate. So, if you have any, about Evelyn’s Trach or suction machine, please, feel free to ask away! 👇🏻

Today is all about women in medicine and the power that holds within each one of us! So first off, Happy National Women Physicians Day! As two female student doctors, we can't even begin to express how much this platform has given us, and we're truly blessed to be in the medical field. Despite all the hold backs, nothing can take away the feeling of saving another life, impacting others, and for reaching the success of satisfaction. We wouldn't trade it for the world because medicine is life, and life is medicine. . . . Today, I'm gonna start off by telling you a little bit about myself, one of the administrators of this account @fueledbymedicine, I'm currently a final year medical student that just finished my gynaecology and obstetric rotation today, and hence today's post - the beautiful pelvis; the fusion, growth and evolution for bearing, and the containment of the body's most beautiful concept - childbirth. After numerous runs up and down the 8 floors of the obstetrics and gynaecology department, to one examination after another, to maternity posting; its safe to say it's been a crazy and hectic, but none the less a wonderful learning experience. 💉📚💊 And then ending the day with your third year resulting coming in during the last few hours of your rotation; and just seeing that PASS-- knowing those endless and sleepless nights were all worth it! It's the biggest achievement as a student, every year when you know you're one step closer to the real world.
