Receiving feedback can be hard—even when the person giving you the feedback has the best intentions. Here are some tips to make reading constructive criticism easier. 👩🏻💻 Understand that even kind constructive criticism can hurt. It's difficult not to take it personally, and it's easy to mistake criticism of your work as criticism of you. But it isn't. I promise. 👩🏻💻 Create a routine that makes you feel good for when you’re about to dive into feedback. Below is what I do before reading feedback. 1. Remind myself that getting notes doesn't mean my work is bad. 2. Sit down with my favourite tea and cozy blanket. 3. Put on some soothing music. 4. Take a deep breath and open my mind. 👩🏻💻 Take a breath after you've read the critique. Check in with how you're feeling and sit with the emotions for a minute. Feelings aren't bad or good. They just are. 👩🏻💻 Harness your feelings by asking yourself questions. When you're ready, use your emotions as a guide. Take a look at these examples: - Do you feel silly because you didn't think of x like that? This is your opportunity to expand on it! - Do you feel the person took away the wrong message? It's time to look at what led them astray and make some changes! Remember: it’s okay to find this process difficult. Give yourself a break and let yourself feel any feelings you might have. Giving yourself a day or so to let the feedback sink in can be helpful too! Once you feel refreshed, dive back in. You’ve got this! Here are things to look for in a critique partner, whether that is a friend, writing group, teacher, or coach: -Their advice is constructive rather than critical. You should never feel attacked when being critiqued. -They ask questions. The right person (or people) will have a genuine interest and want their feedback to align with your goals for the piece. -You feel listened to. You should feel like your critique partner is talking “with” you, not “at” you. -You feel comfortable disagreeing with them. You should never feel forced to take someone’s advice. It is your work, not theirs, and even if they feel strongly about something, they need to respect your right to say no. What do you do when things don't go as planned? That's the #WriterFriendsChallenge for today. I can only speak for myself, so... ⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️ 1️⃣ Commence Muppet flail. Seriously, my first response is to freak out. 2️⃣ Overthink and Catastrophize. I will sit and dredge up everything I've ever done wrong and imagine everything that can go wrong. I'll spend about 15 minutes doing this. 3️⃣ Calm down. Having purged my system of all the ick, I can settle back down, reinstall my thinking brain (as opposed to my lizard brain), and... 4️⃣ Brainstorm solutions. I'll spend a couple of hours jotting down ideas to solve the conundrum. If that doesn't work, I... 5️⃣ Do something physical that gets me out of my head, which often brings a fresh perspective. 6️⃣ Pivot and Flow. Sometimes, there is no fixing something. When that happens, adjusting your mindset and/or expectations can go a long way towards making a difference. ⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️ How do you manage the unexpected in your life? It seems like every now and then we need to remind authors of this. As a writer myself, I understand that negative reviews can sometimes be hurtful. However, I’ve done several posts in the past about the books I bought solely off of low reviews. This means that a negative review doesn’t instantly mean the end of a career. In fact, it can actually gain readers. 😊 so if you’re a writer and you see a negative review take a breath, vent to your friends if you need to, and then keep going.
