"[William] Wellman was crazy about her [Barbara Stanwyck], and he didn't like too many actresses. She was lusty, bantered about, was full of wit. She played tennis, went to the fights, didn't gossip, and took trouble on the chin. She minded her own business, smoked with an unaffected pleasure thought of as masculine [...]. Neither Wellman nor Barbara were interested in the social world of Hollywood, nor were they engaged in the political games of the town. She admired Wellman. Both stood apart from Hollywood society. Barbara didn't like the showiness of picture stars. 'I wouldn't wear an ermine coat to a Hollywood opening if I was offered the coat and a thousand dollar bonus,' she said. 'All of the ermine coats the furriers had in stock were rented to movie people for the [recent] opening of 'Grand Hotel'. Imagine putting on a show like that just to let people think you're more prosperous than you are. Not for me.' Wellman saw Barbara as intelligent, resourceful, tough: 'a magnificent actress.' 'Wild Bill' was one of Barbara's 'best-beloved' people. He studied his script hard, prepared for his day's work, and always did his best. His work was sure and fast. Wellman took chances. Two different types, but equally marvellous in what they did, though Capra was more of an introvert, except when he handled people. And he could make YOU understand. And that was a... that's a great quality. Bill was 'Wild Bill,' if you want. (Laughs.) I used to call him 'Wild Bill' Wellman because that's what he was, which was a wonderful way to work because he gave YOU HIS enthusiasm. And when he wanted a quiet set, he ironed it out. He said: 'Any hollering or whooping you wanna do, fellas, do it now. But, if you do it after I say 'now,' you're out of luck, you're off the set.' That was him. They were both very positive men. Very positive. And, it was right of Bill because that's the only way Bill worked. He could be quiet as a mouse when you were called upon to do an emotional scene. Actress Barbara Stanwyck was born #onthisday in 1907. She wore this Edith Head designed black period gown, embellished with four silver birds formed from beads and rhinestones, as Hannah Sempler in The Great Man's Lady (1942). Sadly, only the beadwork has survived, and a reproduction dress was made to preserve the beadwork. "Preparation for a role that would age the 33-year-old Stanwyck to 109 was extensive. Charles Gemora (who worked for the picture's make-up artist, Wally Westmore) created brilliant make-ups for the ages she would portray. Edith Head did graceful costumes for a period that is a designer's delight. And two weeks of tests followed. [...] Head recalled these and said of Stanwyck: '... she's absolutely loyal. If she feels something is right, no one can change her mind. She'll stand up against director, producer and writer, come hell or high pressure. [At one point in] 'Great Man's Lady' she played the owner of a gambling hall, one of the richest women in the early West. I copied a dress worn by a noted woman of the period: black velvet embroidered with diamond birds. Stanwyck loved it; so did I. When we ran the test, several executives suggested that, wonderful as it was, it would look even better without the birds. 'If the birds go, the dress goes,' Stanwyck said firmly. 'I like 'em; so does Edith.'' [...] Along with the externals being planned for her, Stanwyck was working on a set of her own - one that would be prompted by her understanding of the internals. Her research took her and director William Wellman to an Eastern Star home [a retirement home], where she absorbed some of the real thing." I was extremely impressed by Missy's realistic imitation of the gestures and the movements of the elderly in this movie. I was also very interested in how the script highlights the gaps in historiography which characterize the reconstruction of any individual's biography. I’ve only time for short posts this weekend, but I do want to mark the 115th birth anniversary of Barbara Stanwyck, born on 16 July 1907. Affectionately known as Missy, she was of course equally adept in melodrama, thrillers, film noir, and more romantic roles. Her favourite genre though was the Western and given that’s my favourite too, it’s not surprising that it’s those films (and a tv series) that I’ll be concentrating on in these galleries. In the years since, it’s been a sanatorium, a boarding house, a dance studio and a filming location.
