It also stars Veronica Lake, looking gorgeous. The sadistic nature of this film is something else and a little surprising for the times. Ladd gets repeatedly beat and tortured for a good chunk of this film, and there’s also a bit where he gleefully cuckolds a man to his face, driving him to suicide. The Quatermass Xperiment (a.k.a. The Creeping Unknown in the USA) is a 1955 British science fiction horror film from Hammer Film Productions. He cuts a deal with the Asst. DA, but has to contend with Richard Widmark, doing his giggling psychopath thing and on the hunt for him after he squeals. Young Karl Malden is in a few scenes and beautiful Coleen Gray is Bianco’s love interest. Some excellent noir cinematography helps too. 年始の３日間は出勤前にナチスドイツのドキュメンタリーを鑑賞してから出勤するのが個人的な年明けだったのに、どうやらBSもいよいよ保守に回ったようで、いきなり糞面白くなくなってしまった為、年末の今日、フリッツ・ラング監督のコチラを観た。気になってから何年も経過していたが、年末に何とも相応しい大名作！ 「死刑執行人もまた死す」 ナチスドイツがヨーロッパを支配する時代のチェコスロバキアが舞台。ナチスドイツの実在人物の高官だったラインハルト・ハイドリヒを暗殺する地下組織の男。 ナチスドイツは暗殺犯を血眼で探し、名乗りが出ない限り、一般市民をどんどん収容していき、犯人を匿った人間は銃殺刑に処すという恐怖支配。 主犯格の医者の男と、彼を手助けしたことで、家族を含めて巻き添えを喰らう女性とその婚約者。彼女の父はナチスドイツに捕えられ、彼女は主犯格の男に協力しながら父の救済に奔走していく、騙し騙されのスリルをひたすら楽しむ超名作！ うわー！これ退屈の隙が一切ない！強固で硬質な画作りと、ブレることなき画面強度、練りに練られたインテリジェンス溢れる脚本力に、光陰の駆使が難しいモノクロでこれほど巧みになされているとは…畏敬の念を抱かずにいられない！モノクロだからお洒落に見えるだけ的な的外れな意見も時折目にするが、モノクロを知らない愚の骨頂的コメント！ また、登場人物が増えるとごちゃごちゃし易いのだが、本作では一切それがなければ、人物説明などなくとも鑑賞する側に理解させることのできる質の高さ。 カタルシスなど一切残してなるものか！とでも言わんばかりのフリッツ・ラング監督の容赦ない絵面の冷酷なラスト。それもこの監督自身がユダヤ人で、まだヒトラー存命中に本作を作成し、ハイドリヒが死亡した翌年の作品という事でもこの人の並々ならぬ本作への思いが感じ取れる。白い画面に字幕白はちょい観づらさも感じられはしたが、「Not The End」、終わっていないというメッセージ、これは実際にナチスドイツによる支配世情を生きた人間だったからこそ言える発言、また、説得力である。様々な形で反戦映画やアンチナチス作品があるが、大抵が感動を呼ぶ作品だったり、高官暗殺までを描いたもの、そういう作品が長きに亘り人気というのも頷けるが、高官暗殺以降という映画は量産されている記憶がないだけに本作はある意味孤高の作品と言えるだろう。全く非の打ち所も容赦もない、記録ではなく、記憶に刻み込まれる作品。フリッツ・ラング監督作品、ドンドン観て行きたい。 #フリッツラング #fritzlang #ブライアンドンレヴィ #briandonlevy #ハンスハインリヒフォンドワルドフスキー #hansheinrichvontwardowski #ウォルターブレナン #walterbrennan #アンナリー #annalee

Noir thriller ‘The Glass Key’ (1942) is based on the crime novel by Dashiell Hammett. The plot: Paul Madvig (Brian Donlevy) is a corrupt political boss who decides to break with his past by joining with reform-minded candidate Ralph Henry, angering his former gangster cronies and confusing loyal assistant Ed Beaumont (Alan Ladd). Madvig tells Beaumont that the upright Henry has "given me the key to his house", but Beaumont warns him that "it's a glass key - be careful it doesn't break off". What holds interest is not the convoluted Tammany Hall-style politicking but the performances of the three leads: Brian Donlevy, Veronica Lake and Alan Ladd. The best sequence by far – outside audience-pleasing flirting by Lake and Ladd – is when Ladd ends up as the prisoner of some thugs. He’s brutally beaten but escapes by setting the building on fire, smashing through a window and dropping quite a distance on to a restaurant table. Though the film as a whole has a tendency to meh, it leaps with adrenaline when a man’s life is at stake. Breaking from the stuff I have at home to sneak in another one leaving Criterion at the end of the month - 1942’s The Glass Key, starring Alan Ladd, Veronica Lake, and Brian Donlevy. Funny, I was just thinking that Ladd, as striking cowboy Shane, had to be about 6’2”, which would look interesting next to Lake at 5’2”, but it turns out Ladd was only around 5’6”, so go figure. That’s movie magic for ya. Anyway, it’s adapted from Dashiell Hammett, and though it’s tagged as Film Noir (like Hammett’s 1941 adaptation The Maltese Falcon), I’m one of those insufferable people who believes than noir didn’t really develop until the mid-40s, so this can’t be that. A crime film sure - and that’s a perfectly honorable thing - maybe even a great one (we’ll see) but not technically a noir. Stuart Heisler directs and Jonathan Latimer adapted Hammett’s novel for the screen, and that I haven’t seen anything by either of them only means I can’t pre-pigeonhole things about this one (well, except for the novel author and two of the three stars anyway). German cinematographer Theodor Sparkuhl (great name!) worked with Lubitsch in Germany and Renoir in France (among many others) before moving to the States in 1931 to work with somewhat less distinguished directors up until his death in 1946 at age 51. #theglasskey #dashiellhammett #alanladd #veronicalake #briandonlevy #theodorsparkuhl #stuartheisler #jonathanlatimer #1942 #americancinema
