Finished watching This Town last night, I think they made a mistake by promoting it as being in some way linked to 2Tone, as it really wasn’t. Parts of it were good, parts rather daft and the soundtrack was excellent. Last summer we sold a donkey jacket to the costume dept of BBC’s new drama This Town. As huge fans of Steven Knight we were not only excited to see something we’d sold on screen but have been waiting patiently ever since for the show to air! I’ve now finished it and loved every minute. When you watch a show and immediately google if there will be a second series, you know it’s a good one. I think we were a little naive to think we could spot our donkey jacket in a show of this era as it was pretty much a uniform staple. Hopefully ours is in there somewhere, but if not we loved the show anyway. I have enjoyed watching Steven (Peaky Blinders) Knight’s Two-Tone themed, midlands-based, television series This Town, which concludes tonight on BBC1. It has reminded me vividly of the Ska revival in London around 1979 and ‘80, and the vibrant tribalism of those occasionally confrontational nights. These are some images I did at the time, as a printmaking student at the RCA. The first two are actually re-drawn from late 70’s images and appeared in the 1989 book Poguetry. The first accompanied Shane MacGowan’s lyrics for Billy’s Bones and the second went with The Old Main Drag. Next is a loving couple on Upper Street, etched in 1980, followed by two late 70’s pencil drawings. I don’t know where the originals are but these were reproduced in Ambit, Issue 82, in 1980 @ambitmagazine Then there is a large etching depicting an incident at London’s Music Machine where a man who I later became friends with got duffed up by the bouncers but rescued by members of the audience. Having just finished watching the brilliant “This Town” on the I-Player all about a dysfunctional band from the Midlands led by a righteous visionary I couldn’t help but think about Kevin Rowland and this utterly unique debut from @dexysofficial. Really enjoyed This Town on BBC iplayer. Written by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight, This Town follows the formation of a new two-tone band in 1980s Birmingham. The final couple of episodes when the band start playing together are great. Reminded me of my Brum music map. Singer and keyboardist from Chelmsley Wood, a guitarist from Coventry, bassist from Sutton Coldfield and a drummer from Moseley. #thistown
