When one former student became old enough to vote, she was excited to vote for the first time. Later, she related how challenging it was for her to understand many of the words on the election ballot. We discussed how to prepare for voting by finding a sample ballot before going to her polling place. For the next election, she decided to read through the ballot at home, which would be less stressful. She would ask her family members about unfamiliar words or phrases. She would also search for information about topics on the ballot and decide where she stands on the issue. Not a few students have issues reading and spelling BUSY and BUSINESS. This word has a pronounced /ɪ/ (short-i). Do your students have trouble spelling NONE or NOTHING? When one of my students asked about the spelling of DONE and NONE, we took a look at why they're spelled that way. Once we had worked on DONE and my student saw it had a base of + <-ne> suffix, my student asked if NONE has a base like DONE has a base spelled . That led to seeing other words that let us refuse, decline, deny, or just negate something. Let's talk spelling practice. 🎯Practice spelling using a word's family, the related words with prefixes or suffixes added. 🎯Word Sums help students see the morphemes, reinforcing memory of the spelling. Verbally spell out the word sum. 🎯Some students like to take a break from writing and spell out loud a few words they're practicing. 🎯Dictate simple phrases using the words they need to practice. Students may prefer to create their own phrases or sentences with spelling words. 🎯Use spelling games. Bonus if the game requires the student to spell and not just copy a spelling, and Double Bonus if there are no penalties for a misspelling. It should be fun practice, not a test. 🎯Check the Spelling activities give students practice looking for misspellings and correcting them. A mix of accurately and inaccurately spelled words makes it interesting. More learning happens during these activities when students discuss WHY a word IS or ISN'T properly spelled. Meaning is tied to spelling. That phrase didn't always make sense to me. It does now. Our students need the reason. They benefit from patterns and multiple opportunities to practice. Spelling target spellings in phrases and sentences adds meaning to the practice. But the meaning is found in the spellings themselves. Suffixes that are pronounced the same but spelled differently carry different meanings. <-EST> and <-IST> are pronounced the same, at least the way I say them. ➡How can students tell which one to use? They can when we teach them what these suffixes mean when they're added to a base element. When I recognized the signs of dyslexia in our third child, I worried our daughter might not learn to read. She was almost eight years old. If I said, /k/ /æ/ /t/, she couldn't put that together. Rhyming was not registering either. My thoughts were filled with worst-case scenarios. Can you relate? Whether reading, learning a new digraph, or spelling, practicing with a game makes the practice more engaging and memorable. That's why I incorporate games into tutoring sessions. Last week a student let me know he wouldn't be available to meet on Wednesday. I reminded him that I would be out of town this Wednesday so we both are unavailable to meet. I asked him where he was going, and he told me they were going to Orlando, Florida. I HADN'T told him that my husband and I were going to Orlando to see our son be inducted into the Society of Actuaries. I texted his mom and asked if we might be able to meet up in person. I've worked online with this student since he was 5 and had a lot of trouble distinguishing sounds and had speech difficulties that often required someone to tell me what he had said. He had speech therapy. He and I used the Lindamood Phoneme Sequencing program as well. In time we began working on reading and spelling. He's 11 now. It was so fun to get to visit him and his family in person. He's the third student in their family I've had the pleasure to work with. We have used Equipping Minds activities to work on processing, working memory, etc. so I brought my Blink cards so we could play a game in person. That was awesome. He won, of course. Most students with dyslexia struggle with reading, but almost all the ones I've met and worked with have trouble with spelling. The random (to them) sequence of letters. Remembering the order of those letters is a challenge. Polysyllabic words are difficult. But there are ways to help your students with those. Memorizing is not the answer. Too many words. Teach them spelling patterns and suffixing conventions. Use word sums and word families so they can see the meaning connections despite pronunciation differences across a word family. When a student wondered about the spelling of purchase that led us on a chase to find an unstressed syllable. Never had I ever connected purchase to its base until this student asked a question! ❤ I love it when I get to learn something new along with a student. We dug into a structured word inquiry. 1. What does the word mean? Use it in a sentence. 2. What is the word's structure? Looking at the morphology (word parts) is it just a base element or are there prefixes and/or suffixes? If so, what's the word sum? 3. What are the word's relatives and etymology (origin and history)? 4. What are the phonemes? 5. And we practiced how to find stressed and unstressed syllables in words. "Students with dyslexia benefit from simple accommodations. What are accommodations? How do they help students? Which accommodations will benefit your student?" Throughout the school year, check in with your student about how his/her accommodations are working with each teacher. If your student will have new teachers when the semester changes, don't assume they'll get the memo about your student's accommodations. Over the break, reach out with a friendly email to let the new semester teachers know what accommodations are part of their 504 Plan or Individualized Education Plan (IEP). Tell them you appreciate their help to make the upcoming semester a successful one. Thank the current semester's teachers for their support. Many students and adults with dyslexia use speech-to-text software to dictate what they need to write. Voice Typing. Like typing for dysgraphia, voice typing can make a huge difference. Being able to have software type what you want to say without the slow trudging through spelling words before you've lost your train of thought. Dyslexia is not outgrown. We can't wait for our kids to outgrow it. We can give them tools to help them with reading, spelling, writing, math facts, directionality issues, word retrieval, etc. We can encourage them to develop their talents and strengths. Sigh. Feeling different or less than everyone else. The stress of worrying you can't keep up or you're going to be asked a question and not be able to respond quickly enough. The homework and tests. Even just texting with friends can be stressful trying to type and spell. I knew a wonderful older woman who was such a character, funny, and outgoing, but she had some trauma from school. During an oral report, she'd gotten tongue-tied and misspoken and the laughter was still ringing in her ears 60 years later. Younger kids have those feelings, teens have those feelings, and adults have them. Make your home a safe place for your kids to share how they're feeling. LISTEN--with your eyes and your ears. Find ways to minimize the situations that cause stress. Find ways to maximize their coping skills. if something you try doesn't work, keep working on it. Talk a therapist or school counselor. Many students and adults with dyslexia have difficulty with spelling. Our culture equates intelligence with spelling accurately. That's false. If you find spelling easy, please be gentle with those who aren't able to recall the correct sequence of letters in every English word. Our daughter was occasionally embarrassed by public corrections in group texting or on social media. 🐻Mama Bear occasionally let the corrector know the story, our daughter's story behind the spelling errors. Please let it go. I know it feels irresistible to correct others. It may feel like a service you're providing. I've done it myself. Let's commit right now together never to do that again! If you're THEIR professional editor, go ahead and correct away--they're paying you to do that. Spelling is a pain for many of our students. Lots of memorizing, and every week a new list to learn, and it's a challenge. Parents, I know that's an understatement. "The whole point of spelling is to enable us to recognise words when they are written down. But there's a second thing. We value spelling if it helps us recognise the relationships between words." David Crystal, SPELL IT OUT (Yes, recognize in US but he's a Brit so his words, his spelling. 😀) Great book, you can find it on Amazon. When students can see the spelling relationships between words with a shared base spelling, then spelling becomes less about memorizing the letter sequence. They start to SEE the spelling of the word family. The relationships help students see the sense of the spelling! Dyslexia can be diagnosed as early as five years old. What might dyslexia look like in a 5-year-old? Your child has had opportunities at home or in preschool to learn the alphabet but has trouble remembering the name of each letter. Despite the child having learning experiences with his/her own name, s/he may not be able to recognize or remember his/her own name's spelling. The student may not be able to detect rhyme in a group of words: not, dot, pot, lot, rot, tot. Who can give an official dyslexia diagnosis? Psychologists, neuropsychologists, speech-language pathologists--but be sure the professional you choose has experience diagnosing dyslexia. All do not. It could be a waste of time and money to have someone without experience assessing your child. Ask them how many children they've diagnosed with dyslexia. Do your homework. Get referrals from other parents. Schools usually do not diagnose dyslexia. They can assess for a "specific learning disability" to determine if your child is eligible for special education services. Dyslexia can run in families. A child with one parent with dyslexia is said to have a 30 - 50% chance of having dyslexia. It's not always that direct. You may not have any relatives you believe might also have dyslexia. Our daughter has dyslexia, but neither her dad nor I have it. I have a couple of relatives who struggled with reading in school and I have directionality issues, which sometimes accompany dyslexia. So maybe she inherited it from me. It's not easy to see a child's challenge might have come from you. 100% I get that. Friends, there's no blame or shame with what gets passed from generation to generation. It does no good. When we connect spelling to meaning and to its structure, we help students make spelling memorable. Practicing spelling words in phrases and sentences provides context. Working with word sums helps students see, recognize, and internalize the structure of words. Modeling how you or I might think through which letters could represent the spoken sounds in a word and how related words could help with narrow down those choices can help students learn to do the same. Showing them how to think through spelling a word can and hopefully will influence their thinking. After the long Labor Day weekend (in the US), you can talk with your students about and notice its word family. Using a matrix helps students really SEE the prefixes and suffixes. They're working with the structure of words. In this word family there are two agent suffixes used. What’s an agent suffix? A suffix that changes a verb into an agent noun, the action into the person or thing doing the action. The <-er> and <-or> agent suffixes are in ride + er —> rider act + or —> actor A new resource has the matrix with structured word inquiry questions, an infographic on the suffixes, and a suffixing game using word sums. Anybody else struggle with this? I don’t want to let them down or I have to finish today. We have to take care of ourselves so we have something to give. Take a break. Take a nap—that can be an amazing day changer for overwhelm & worn out. Our kids and students work harder because many things take longer and require more cognitive energy than other students. Pushing through may not be the best way to finish strong. Help your kids or your students learn that it’s okay to take a break and recharge. Then work some more. This statement from Real Spelling became a mission statement for Tools for Dyslexia. Every student has the right to understand how English spelling really works and to be able to spell and read any word. Some of what I learned from Real Spelling is to look at the Latin and Greek roots to better understand why words have their spelling regardless of how we might think it should be spelled. We have to look at the meaning connections because English spelling doesn't subscribe to default phonology. Its roots are deeper than that. We have to keep questioning and be curious because scholars observe and notice things, and that leads to greater understanding and joy. Experience engaging with the language is exciting and doesn't dim for those who truly love to learn. Initials after your name and scholarship are not always equal. Once you've seen it, you can't unsee it. (Two, twin, twice, between, twilight.) You can never step into the same river twice because the river isn't the same and neither are you. Our understanding of language evolves as we learn more and the language itself changes over time. How does all this help me be a better tutor? I'm open to learning new ideas from others regardless of their credentials. I'm not afraid of things I don't YET understand regarding English spelling. I know there ARE answers even if I haven't found them yet. I don't need a program or a script to help me answer a student's question. Confidence comes from engaging with the language, not a program. I know that one size, one program doesn't fit all the needs they have. It reinforces my courage to try something new to fit a student's specific issue. Real Spelling never claimed to have all the answers and yet the impact this mentor has had on teachers, tutors, parents, and students all over the world has been phenomenal. Here are a couple of summer reading suggestions. I met Gail Venable and Sue Hegland over 9 years ago in classes I began taking to learn more about how English works. They had both been at this longer than me and were supportive and inspiring. Gail is the author of Backpocket Words, Sharing the Essence of English Spelling, and Sue is the author of Beneath the Surface of Words, What English Spelling Reveals and Why It Matters. Read these, which is to say, Study these books. They aren't difficult reading but they are thought-provoking and potentially mindset-changing unless you're already familiar with Structured Word Inquiry. Early readers guess at unfamiliar words. That’s normal. But we don’t teach guessing as a reading strategy. We teach them to look at the spelling and to spell out loud unfamiliar words. We teach them to consider the possible phonemes like spelling /k/ or /s/. We teach them the phonemes that single-letter vowels and vowel digraphs can represent and we teach them about schwa. We teach them about prefixes, suffixes, connecting vowel letters, and suffixing conventions. We help them see the structure with word sums and word families. And about phrasing, punctuation, thinking, visualizing, and asking questions while they read. There’s more. Just like adults feel dread as the weekend ends and they have to face the start of the work week, children often feel that too. School anxiety is real. Sunday may be a time to give more attention, do things your child enjoys, give some 1:1 time, read aloud a fun book to them, play a game, and Encourage them. "Won't" is sometimes labeled "a weirdo" or "irregular" contraction by spelling programs. I don't disagree that it appears to ignore the standard contraction process. But what if it's following an accepted pattern one other contraction uses? Compare "won't" to "can't". "Won't" was previously "wonnot" in Middle English. Let's make a contraction from this compound "wonnot". We'll replace the second and the with an apostrophe --> won't. Is that any different than "cannot" becoming "can't"? How do you say goodbye to a tutoring student you’ve worked with for 7+ years?! For the past few high school years since she’s been homeschooling we’ve met 5 days a week 2 hours a day. Her homeschool high school is finished today. The amount of time we worked together is not typical but she has more than dyslexia. We’ve worked on reading restaurant menus and understanding recipe instructions, and talked about getting mail-in ballots so she could take her time to read and ask questions. We talked about reviewing road names before driving somewhere new so she is familiar enough to recognize the names on road signs quickly. Of course all that was interwoven into working on literacy skills. She reads and her spelling is amazingly good. Will she always use spell check? Of course but so do I. She knows how to use word sums and a matrix, both of which made a huge difference for her spelling. We worked on writing sentences, paragraphs, and 5-paragraph essays. Tutoring is not just about the academic skills. It’s an investment of the heart too. I’m glad I don’t have another student scheduled for a while.
