Dune du Pilat Sie hat einen Nord-Süd-Verlauf und ist bis zu 110 Meter hoch, 500 Meter breit und etwa 2,7 Kilometer und liegt an der Meeresöffnung des Bassin d’Arcachon, südlich des Städtchens Arcachon und des Vorortes Pyla sur Mer, gegenüber von Cap Ferret. Noch Wochen später hatte ich den feinen Sand in meinen Taschen und auch in meinen Sachen die mich immer wieder an diesen schönen Moment erinnern ließ. Arrived in Thanjavur, we first ride to Maratha Palace. 👑 There is a ticket booth especially for tourists, but we just generously overlook it. Coconuts bigger than a head, that's what you get in India. 👀 The slightly sweet coconut water is full of electrolytes, which are more than welcome in the heat and for occasional gut irritations. 🙈 And, what many may not know: you can (let) open the coconut you drank up and spoon out the gooey young coconut meat. Really delicious! In the picture, though, it was a slightly older coconut, the older the harder the contents.... (April 2019) ____________________ Kokosnüsse, größer als ein Kopf, das gibt's in Indien. 👀 Das leicht süßliche Kokoswasser ist voller Elektrolyte, welche bei der Hitze und gelegentlicher Darmirritation mehr als willkommen sind. 🙈 Und, was viele vielleicht nicht wissen: man kann die ausgetrunkene Kokosnuss öffnen (lassen) und das glibberige junge Kokosfleisch herauslöffeln. In each brown-black solid shell sit up to 3 jelly-like palm seeds, also called palm (seed) hearts. They taste pleasantly sweet and are very refreshing. You just have to weigh whether you can reconcile with your digestive tract that the seller touches both the fruit and the money and other things... ;) (April 2019) _________________________ Wenn ihr euch nun fragt, was sind diese weißen, kapselartigen Dinger.. So sehen die Früchte der Zuckerpalme aus! In jeder braun-schwarzen festen Hülle sitzen bis zu 3 gelee-artige Palmensamen, auch Palmen(samen)herzen genannt. Sie schmecken angenehm süß und sind sehr erfrischend. At the roadside, we discover a stand selling sugar cane juice at just the right time. A clever arrangement of large and small gears and a special grinder elicit the juice from the long, fibrous stalks. ⚙️ Only when we taste it do we realize that it is also mixed with ginger and lime. Extremely tasty, albeit very sweet. 🍬 With its many vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, the sugar cane juice is a real "superjuice" (as they would title it in the hip luxury industrial countries). 🥤 Among other things, it contains calcium, magnesium, iron and zinc and is a perfect refreshment every now and then, especially for high-performance athletes like us 😜 (April 2019) __________________________ Am Straßenrand entdecken wir zum richtigen Zeitpunkt einen Stand mit Zuckerrohrsaft. What did we have for breakfast in India? Lots of fruit, of course, because in this climate it simply grows in abundance. When we cycled through India, papayas, pineapples and mangoes were in season, but there were also pomegranates, bananas, coconuts and many other fruits that we will show you later! In addition to fruit, we mixed rice flakes or (very rarely oatmeal) with nuts and seeds as a base with water, depending on availability. How our evenings in India OFTEN looked like, an example: The search for a place to sleep is somehow very difficult today. There are villages everywhere and it is already dark. As we ride a little into the bushes, we first overlook the thorns and soon have to turn back. Unfortunately they have left traces in Anja's rear tire, so that we are forced to remove them and change the tube a little later. A huge highlight for the whole village. Everybody joins us bit by bit to see what we do. The village eldest welcomes us here and invites us to camp here. We would like to accept the offer and want to have a look at the proposed place. He leads us directly to the village square and shows us that we could just put our tent here. It would also be very safe. We like to believe that, but to sleep on the display seems a bit too extreme to us, since we know the curiosity of the Indian population only too well. So we thankfully decline and now we have to go on. It is already really late, but we have to get through now. On Google Maps we search for a piece of forest, something green - our last hope. After a little longer search and pushing down a few sandy paths we find a kind of weir, where a guard house and a big tree are standing. Because there is absolutely nobody there, we simply build our tent under the protection of the tree. And already an Indian on a motorcycle arrives and lights up what we are probably doing here. And afterwards another one... But... they are very friendly and ask if we need something for dinner and then wish us a good night and drive away again. Exhausted we enjoy the peace and quiet and can finally get our well deserved sleep. Often we passed banyan trees along the way, which gave us riddles. 🤔 Why do you think people hang plastic bags with something in them in the air roots? In India the banyan tree is a sacred place. It stands for immortality and can grow even under the most adverse conditions. Our idea now was that people should fix the ashes of their deceased in the tree to bring them luck. 🍀 Maybe one of you knows more about this? "Kumbakonam", the name of the city where this temple is located, is roughly translated as "Jug's Corner". 🏆 The associated legend says that the holy jug ("kumbha") of the Hindu God Brahma landed exactly where this temple is located today in the course of an extinction and rebirth of the universe - caused by an arrow of the gods of Shiva. 🏛️ It is also dedicated to Shiva... and the great speciality here was a temple elephant! 🐘 To see an elephant in the temple was an awesome and at the same time very sad sight for us. With bells around his neck he moved apathetically swinging back and forth all day long. And not for his own pleasure, but out of the misery of captivity. 😞 In another temple the visitors gave the offering money into the trunk of the trained elephant, so that Ganesha (the elephant god) would bring luck to the people. (11.04.2019) ________________________ "Kumbakonam", der Name der Stadt, in der sich dieser Tempel befindet, heißt grob übersetzt "Bechers Ecke". 🏆 Die zugehörige Legende besagt, dass der heilige Kelch ("kumbha") des Hindu Gottes Brahma bei einer Auslöschung und Wiedergeburt des Universums - verursacht durch einen Götterpfeil von Shiva - genau dort gelandet ist, wo heute dieser Tempel steht. 🏛️ Auch er ist Shiva gewidmet... und die große Besonderheit hier war ein Tempelelefant! 🐘 Einen Elefanten im Tempel zu sehen, war für uns ein ehrfürchtiger und gleichzeitig sehr trauriger Anblick. Mit Glöckchen um den Hals bewegte er sich den ganzen Tag apathisch schwingend hin und her. Und das nicht zu seinem Vergnügen, sondern aus der Not der Gefangenschaft heraus. 😞 In einem anderen Tempel wurde von den Besuchern das Opfergeld in den Rüssel des trainieren Elefanten gegeben, damit Ganesha (der Elefantengott) den Menschen Glück bringt. The Brihadishvara Temple is an over 1,000 years old one and is the only preserved part of the capital - Gangaikonda Cholapuram - of the Chola Empire, which dominated all of South India and Sri Lanka at that time. 👑 It is an active temple dedicated primarily to Shiva and has been listed as one of the main attractions of Tamil Nadu in the UNESCO World Heritage List. 🏛️ Not only the impressive temple complex itself, but also our running the gauntlet between the buildings remains in our memory. 🔥 It was so hot in India in April that it became necessary to lay carpets or wet cloth between the individual stations to avoid burning your feet on the hot stones. The water buffalo. Definitely one of our favorite animals on the trip. 🤩 It's the first time we see them in their element and we remain spellbound for many minutes. A group of water buffalos splash around in the moat and enjoy the cool down, it is just great and exhilarating to watch them!
