I'm of the opinion that while it's a lot of fun and deep rewarding, #biketouring can be a big cognitive load. Rolling into a place, setting up camp, eating and sleeping, finding time to figure out where to go and what to do next, then waking up early, breaking camp, and riding away, before really getting acquainted with a place, it can wear you down. As @downtofun put it, it feels weird rolling through so many amazing places, knowing I won't see them again. We're still hunting though: photos, konbinis, quiet roads and cool places to camp. We finished riding the Kaido and are back on Honshu. As soon as you leave the coast in Japan you get into the mountains pretty quick! After a big climb the views are definitely worth it though, and the hospitality for our one night at Kinoyama camping ground, was incredible and graciously accepted. Rolling on to Okayama and beyond. It feels like so much has happened already since we boarded the ferry in Hiroshima, and cruised down to Matsuyama. The ferry in #nihon of course put BC ferries to shame, both in terms of efficiency and plush interiors. It was a lovely tranquil morning before starting the real riding portion of our trip. We docked in Matsuyama and started riding along magnificent coastal roads towards the Shimanami Kaido, a cycling highway renowned in Japan with separated infrastructure for much of the way, that hops across a series of islands between Shikoku and Honshu. Probably the coolest bits of roads/infrastructure dedicated to bikes I've had the pleasure to ride on. Well-signed, graded pretty easily, even up to the bridges that soared above the water. Shikoku was really neat too, with slow, subtropical vibes. I wish we could have had another night there. We pushed along and camped at a semi-abandoned campsite right on the beach on Oshima island. Amazingly someone came and turned the water and electricity on for us! It was a very cool spot, as @downtofun put it "one for the books". We rested well on the beach and enjoyed an amazing view of the moon. The morning after was cooler, we had a leisurely morning, broke camp, and set off. Parecchio. Foto e curiosità 01. Abbiamo percorso un tratto della Vélodyssée, la lunghissima via ciclabile che percorre tutta la costa atlantica francese. 02. Le graziose saline di Le Petit-Village-Plage, sull'isola di Oléron. 03. “La città delle ostriche”, una delle attrazioni più famose e visitate della regione. Volevate la grigliata d'agnello, e invece no. 04. Uno dei posti più strani mai visti: dal ponte che collega l’isola di Oléron alla terraferma - il terzo ponte più lungo di Francia, spazzato da un vento sferzante - ci si affaccia sulla raccolta “a piedi” delle ostriche. Ecco, è la prima volta che vedo una nave sfrecciare sul fango. 05. Cercando di ritrovare la giusta via al riparo dalla pioggia. 06. Nella città delle ostriche le strade sono ovviamente lastricate di ostriche. 07. Fort Louvois presidia e difende i cacciatori di ostriche dalla notte dei tempi. 08. L'arrivo a Royan. 09. La chiesa di Royan: un umile blocco di cemento armato piantato nel cuore della citta direttamente dalla mano di Dio.

Un fuori programma, sì: domani pedaleremo il doppio per recuperare. Foto e curiosità 01. Il faro di Chassiron è la principale attrazione dell'isola. 02. Ok, non vorrei sembrare quello che fa i capricci, ma da queste parti il vento c'è per davvero. 03. In queste casette colorate - sparse qua e là sull'isola - si coltivano, si vendono e si mangiano ostriche. 04. L'isola è letteralmente bucherellata da queste vasche per l'allevamento di pesci: praticamente ovunque. 05. La Cotinière: spacciato per antico villaggio di pescatori, è in realtà l'unico posto davvero turistico dell'isola. Auto ovunque, infatti. 06. Faro di Chassiron, sul promontorio settentrionale dell’isola. 07. Fiori mai visti: se nessuno sa cosa sono domani cerco con Google. 08. Il primo campeggio dell'anno 🥳 09. Barb is one of our bike camping demonstrators at Bike Overnights 101 on May 7. She and hubby Dan are soon heading out on a week-long bike camping trip on Missouri’s Katy Trail, and Barb stopped by today on a shakedown ride to fine-tune her rig: 1. Her bike—Trek 520 touring bike with Bontrager racks and Barb-built wheels featuring custom anodized Velocity rims 2. Ortlieb panniers packed heavy and mounted low up in front handle way better than heavy rear loads 3. Hydrate! Barb used a Wolf Tooth B-Rad Double Bottle Adapter to mount water bottles side-by-side, allowing her to add one more bottle and clear her top-tube bag 4. Delta cargo net keeps her tent and sleep pad under wraps. Snack! kiwi bag holds power cords and first aid.
