CYCLING IRAN WEEK I 🇮🇷 🔥New Episode 🎬 (link in the bio👆🏽) We’ve been struggling for months whether or not we should cycle in Iran. Our plan B was to take a flight to Central Asia, but eventually, after we had cycled all the way to the border and saw Iran so close, we felt we couldn’t miss the adventure, so despite the many issues we decided to apply for the visa and enter this mysterious country. We are now very excited to share with you our first episode of us cycling Persia! We had never felt such an anxiety about entering another country during our trip, but of course, there are several reasons for it. Despite the unfortunate news we usually get from this part of the world, this enables us to continue to follow the ancient Silk Road to the east. We entered from the northwestern border town Norduz. Our first target is Tabriz and its famous bazaar, but getting there we were faced with some surprises. Get a feeling for this incredible part of our journey through rugged landscapes meeting many people that are part of a world that seems mind-bogglingly different and started to confuse us almost immediately with its contrasts. Doing endless beach rides at mid-day low tide, over shallow (croc-less!) river crossings, gazing the trees for wildlife and sun-baking on those punchy dirt climbs; that pretty much sums up our last few days on the Nicoya peninsula. The eastern part felt more untouched with a more relaxed atmosphere, although definitely not easier! We thought we had seen it all in Guatemala but the handful of Nicoya's 100m+ climbs at the coast, although quite small for our standards, were so steep they made us bathe in sweat and learned Gwenaël that sometimes cycling against gravity is not faster than walking it. The punchy climbs gave way to long stretches of beach riding which we learned to time right at low tide, when the sand was flat and hard-packed and the rivers at their lowest. Some man-handling of our bicycles was necessary to keep the salt water away, luckily so did the crocodiles. Although we had plans to try surfing at Santa Theresa, the surf hub of the peninsula, once we arrived we hurried to get out of this horrible quad-infested and busy tourist town. At a beautiful little bay we found our escape on a campsite where we had a rest day and met Adrian @yourpalthepilot doing the bigger Costa Rican bikepacking loop in the other direction. The last day led us around some greener wilder coastline and wildlife reserves where we got greeted by many scarlet macaws. This giant colourful parrot species was heading towards extinction due to exotic pet trade but numbers returned after successful education programs and reintroductions. We loved their cheeky rasping cries and how their vibrant red plumage contrasted the green forest and blue skies! 〈Glacier View→Glennallen〉 Most of roadside stores which cyclists rely heavily on to survive were closed for season in the area. This fact made it very difficult to go forward. Foods and water were regularly in short. I wouldn't have made it without what I was given by drivers passed me by. Beside I had no place to take a rest because campsite were closed as well. FR 🇫🇷 Jour 130 - L’intensité La journée avait bien commencé. Je voulais avaler des kilomètres et j’avançais à bon rythme dans une chaleur plombante en écoutant un bon podcast. Et soudain : une route fermée et l’agent qui m’indique que la seule solution est de contourner par une route de montagne. +1000m de D+. Je ne suis pas prête mentalement. Au pied de la montagne je m’arrête et je tends le pouce. Cette route ne semble pas très fréquentée. J’attends un peu et un pickup passe. Nous chargeons mon vélo dans la benne où je m’asseois à mon tour et me voila parti pour le sommet. Le chauffeur comprends la manœuvre et m’avance jusqu’au col même si c’est un peu plus loin que sa destination. La vue est magique. L’air glacial. Après quelques photos j’entame la descente de quelques kilomètres vers le village où je compte camper cette nuit. Je passe plusieurs fermes aux patous angoissants qui m’encerclent et m’effraient. J’ai la gorge nouée et je me sens épuisée. À chaque nouveau pâturage, j’ai mon sang qui se glace dans mes veines à l’idée des gros chiens qui débarquent. Arrivée à la bourgade je demande au fermier à côté de l’église si je peux m’y installer pour la nuit. Il accepte et je sombre rapidement dans un sommeil lourd, protégé du vent et de la nuit froide, à la lumière des bougies. C’était une journée comme beaucoup d’autre dans ce voyage. Auf Reisen sein bedeutet auch, dass sich unser Zuhause fast täglich ändert. Umso schöner ist es dann, wenn man sich unterwegs mal wieder so richtig wie zu Hause fühlt. So ging es uns bei Ken, der uns sofort aufgenommen hat, als würden wir schon immer zur Familie gehören. Auf seiner Farm stellten wir eines Abends unser Zelt unter einer Bambushütte mit Ventilator und Strom auf und wurden am nächsten Morgen mit echtem Cappuccino verwöhnt. Währenddessen bietet er uns an, dass wir doch einfach noch einen Tag bleiben könnten. Warum eigentlich nicht? Also bleiben wir einfach noch länger sitzen, lauschen seiner beeindruckender Lebensgeschichte, fahren später mit der ganzen Familie an den 50 km entfernten Strand und werden mit den köstlichsten Khmer Spezialitäten verwöhnt. Ein echtes, kambodschanisches Festmahl! Wir fallen am Abend nur noch satt, zufrieden und absolut beseelt von der Gastfreundschaft auf unsere Isomatten. Uns klingen nur noch Kens Worte in den Ohren, dass man in Kambodscha zur Familie gehört, sobald man zum Essen eingeladen wurde. Und genauso fühlten wir uns heute den ganzen Tag. Als Bestandteil der Familie, die wir eigentlich erst seit heute Morgen kennen. Cambodia 🇰🇭 - From the Border to Siem Reap . „Be careful when you are riding through Cambodia. It is very dangerous. The people are grim and hopeless. Scammers will try to rip you off. People will sneak into your hotel room and exchange your dollars for fake notes. The food is terrible and you will be overcharged. A soup costs 8$!! And it’s not even good.“ . These are just some of the things people told us on our way to Cambodia. Needless to say, we were slightly worried about this leg of the trip. It turns out, in terms of safety and hospitality, Cambodia is no different from any other country we have cycled so far. People are lovely, friendly, welcoming and eager to practice their English, Khmer food is some of the best we had at very affordable prices (1-3$ per dish) and we didn’t get robbed, scammed or cheated. . We have some advantages of course: We look poor and we travel on a bicycle. We always keep our belongings close by and lock the bikes. Just because a place feels safe, doesn’t mean we are careless. We are experienced travellers and don’t want to deny that there is crime in Cambodia. There certainly is. But that is not what we will remember about the country. . We really enjoyed cycling through Cambodia and can only encourage everybody to do so. It is a country with a dark history and, in our opinion, a bright future. . Week 6 and 7 on our way from Piding to Bali to support the Manikaji School. 3000 exciting kilometers since our start and we now reached Istanbul! 🕌 Entering Turkey felt like a big milestone. In the first few days spent here we are impressed by the incredible hospitality. We experienced a very warm welcome with everyone friendly waving at us on the road, treating us with some tea or baklava. Another important part of our pleasant start experience was our stay at the @luleburgazbicycleacademy. It’s a place with a 620m long bike Parcours where you can rent and learn to ride a bike for free and they host bicycle tourers for free. Inanc runs the place with an impressing motivation and we are very thankful for this interesting stay. As said before we are in Istanbul, a metropol with 16.000.000 inhabitants - this number speaks for itself when it comes to how the traffic situation is. We fought ourselves into the “city center” where we spent 5 relaxing days. Now the fight outside the city stands before us, but also a new exciting milestone: entering Asia! Costa Rica has two big peninsulas on the Pacific side, of which the Nicoya peninsula offers a bikepacking route by following mainly the coastline. The first few days on the western part of the peninsula led us along contrasting highly-developed touristic beaches as well as some of the most important sea turtle egg-laying beaches of the Pacific, both ‘home’ to the 4 different sea turtles that use these beaches to lay eggs. We were happy to find a wildcamping spot on the edge of a secluded beach. In the evening some last visitors walked along the beach, apparently searching for sea turtle tracks. None were found, until Gwenaël decided to check the last 100m of the beach which everyone seemed to miss… In the beam of the headlight several tracks, tractor tire like, showed up leading to the forested edge of the beach. Disbelief changed in pure excitement when the sound of sand being excavated became audible; 3 female olive ridley sea turtles were digging and covering holes for their eggs at just 100m from our tent! For almost an hour we watched them, completely amazed, with red light not to disturb them. We waited to see one of them hauling itself back to sea. Such strength and determination! The next morning we enjoyed our coffee overlooking the ocean, when Sarah miraculously spotted just one baby sea turtle, a late bloomer (?), racing for the ‘safety’ of the ocean. Our presence protected it from birds, but never disturbed its path before being tumble-washed into the ocean. What luck to see both stages of this beautiful sea turtle life cycle. Sadly some new trail markings appeared in the morning which made us believe some turtle eggs were stolen from the nest. FR 🇫🇷 Mon vélo et moi : une équipe gagnante depuis plus de 3 ans. J’aime mon vélo. Profondément même si ça fait parfois sourire mes proches. Ce vélo, c’est plus qu’un objet, c’est un compagnon d’aventure et ça a été le vecteur d’une émancipation immense. J’ai acheté d’occasion il y a trois ans ce vélo de 1993 alors qu’il était bien dans son jus. Après une remise en état sommaire je suis partie faire un Tour de France combinée d’une traversé de la suisse sur sa selle. Je ne pouvait alors passer que 4 vitesses sur les 6 qu’il possédait mais j’étais heureuse. À mon retour, j’ai eu envie de le moderniser pour en faire un vélo de voyage plus confortable avec une transmission moderne de 9x3 qui me permet de mouliner tout en douceur. Depuis, nous avons parcouru ensemble quelques 10 000 km en France, au Canada et États Unis et en Espagne puis en Italie et dans les Balkans lors de cette route à soie. Mais en Grèce, le bolide commençait à craquer de partout : d’abord ce fut le moyeu avant qui cassa, puis une petite pièce du moyeu arrière. Le pédalier était bien encrassé, les petites vitesses sautaient : bref il était grand temps de faire la grande révision! Lush jungle appears immediately once crossing the border into Costa Rica, together with a living landscape that has a sweet and organic smell and deep sounds of howler monkeys and birdlife from the treetops. Humid hot air covers the land at the coast and is only bearable with the little breeze which unfortunately totally disappears with the setting of the sun, lets say we had a natural blanket that kept us warm every night.. Together with British cyclist Doug we went inland up the slopes and looped around volcano Rincon de La Vieja. Charming agricultural land appeared and villages mingled like a patchwork with wild jungle where passing motmots, keel-billed toucans and Montezuma oropendola’s catched our attention, of which the last one beautifully weaves hanging nests together in one tree thereby caring for the safety of their eggs from predators and parasitic birds. Within the first two days we saw 2 of the 4 monkey species of Costa Rica, the bold but sleepy howler monkeys whose deep morning and evening cries reach far, as well as the omnivorous white-faced capuchin which is the smartest new world monkey (of the American continents) and famous from movies such as Pirates of the Caribbean. Climbing higher through and over river valleys on increasingly rougher and steeper dirtroads (sometimes around 20% gravel slopes) we entered the dense moist jungle where the air was finally fresh, but ever damp. What we envisioned cycling would be like in Costa Rica! The jungle was most of the time too dense to look deeper than 2m into it, so we probably missed many wildlife, but while catching our breath after a climb the yellow flower in the bend actually appeared to be a flashing-yellow eyelash pitviper sitting dead-silent awaiting its next prey. To Gwenaël the most beautiful (and very poisonous) snake species there is, with some scales covering its eyes like eyelashes. 〈Butte→Glacier View〉 It didn't take much time to realize that I'd come to Alaska too early. I had to cycle through riverside road surrounded by mountains to cross the border but temperatures went down to -15 Celsius early in the morning, it's almost the end of winter though. Ometepe Island is a peculiar volcanic island in lake Nicaragua, the largest lake of Central America. Although we got inspired to take the ferry and spend two days cycling on Ometepe Island because of the route on bikepacking.com, the only ringroad offers little wigglespace for creative routing with half gravel half paved. To get to the island, you have to take a ferry whose workers are not very fond of cyclists, they let us buy 4 different tickets each and refused to take us on their first departure. Well, things don’t always go as expected but a little over 2 hours later we stilll set foot and wheels on the Island which is formed by the two volcanos Concepción and Maderas. With its 1610 meters, volcano Concepción makes Ometepe the highest lake island in the world. The island is one of the more popular tourist destinations of the country, where tourists mostly rent a motorbike to explore the island. We encountered a few, but were surprised by the authentic small rural villages located on mostly the east side of the island. We did miss the notorious howler monkeys of the island, but luckily also the lake sharks(!) which are actually bull sharks temporarily migrating up the river from the Caribbean Sea. The evening we camped on such an idyllic spot on one of the island’s beaches overlooking the perfectly symmetrical volcano Concepción, and realised this was one of the moments we dreamed about while still being home. The next day was only half a day ride, and we enjoyed ourselves swimming with locals in a roadside jungle stream. We ferried back to the mainland and were welcomed to camp in the garden of a sweet family on the shore of the lake. Nous décidons de camper ensemble aux abords des sources d’eaux chaudes bordant les lieux de la célèbre bataille antique. Cette compagnie inattendue est agréable. Au bord du feu, les @geocoucool nous partagent leur récits marocains et turcs à vélo tandis que @didbss et Simon nous racontent leur projet de tour du monde. Le lendemain, c’est à cinq que nous repartons en direction des météores. La caravane joyeuse que nous formons pendant cinq jours me donne le sourire : mes bivouacs sommaires se transforment en campement, mes dîners sur le pouce en repas trois services au feu de bois et mes soirées solidaires en discussions prolongées et fous rires. Cycling south of Cuenca the szenery changed from farmland to more natural forest and grassland. The area is less populated, so there is so much less traffic and as there are fewer villages there are viewer dogs chasing us (although it's still way to many). Temperatures around Anchorage are not so cold to peddle at daytime. On the other hand, I suffered a lot for freezing ground. Fell off from my bike twice in a day! Some parts got broken and needed to be fixed. Mes yeux se sont déjà remplis de tellement d’images et mon coeur de tellement de sourires et de mains tendues. Bientôt je quitterais l’Europe pour entamer un nouveau chapitre de l’aventure et si parfois je me sens fatiguée, j’ai toujours la même envie de parcourir le monde à vélo! My eyes have already been filled with so many images and my heart with so many smiles and outstretched hands.
