Adult and baby water trough. Our little calves are too little to reach the bigger tank and the little trough water float is too slow to keep up with all the cows we have. This is the best system we have right now to make sure everyone gets what they need. The other problem with the small trough is cows love to step in it, so it has to be placed just right to keep them from doing that. Many people believe it’s because those conventional chickens are given hormones, but that’s not true. The USDA does not allow hormones to be given to chickens. So, if you see a label on your chicken that states “no hormones added,” it doesn’t mean anything. No chickens are allowed to have added hormones. In fact, if you look closely at the label, the claim is legally required to be followed by a statement that reads “Federal regulations prohibit the use of hormones.” So, if they’re not fed hormones why are the rotisserie chickens so big? Or much bigger than they were 60 years ago? The short answer is genetic selection centered around hybridization. Unlike GMO’s this is simply natural mating of different breeds of chicken to create a hybrid that exhibits the best points of two or more strains. In the poultry industry, this developed from cross breeding a White Plymouth Rock with a Cornish, creating what is known as the Cornish Cross. The White Plymouth Rock is a naturally tall and big-bodied bird while the Cornish is a squatty wide-breasted bird that has since been tweaked and tweaked. The poultry industry now has strains ideally suited for deboning, others for whole broilers and yet others for breast’s or other parts. Breeding was the first and most important part of the equation. The second part was fortified feed - like high octane rations. By developing dense trace mineral recipes and vitamin packs, feed rations became denser, which enabled these birds to consume a higher nutrient ration. Will these birds die if they eat a less nutrient-dense ration? No, but they just won’t grow as fast. Which is fine if you’re just raising them for yourself. Golden Hour Farm is ran by Chelsey and her husband Spencer and their two children. They are a small, family owned and operated farm with a lot of passion. We spent a good portion of our day with them, filming and taking photos! This is their story! “After 8 years of living in Europe for my husband’s professional basketball career, we decided to give it all up to start my dream of having a ranch. I was one semester away from graduating with my Masters degree in Social Work when I mustered up some gumption to do what I truly wanted to do; to be a rancher. I saw the western lifestyle providing me and my family with the things I so desperately needed. Purpose, confidence, and GRIT! I was pregnant with my second baby in 2020 when we decided to purchase the land and about 2 weeks after she was born, 13 highland cows were dropped off in our pastures. We are a first generation ranch and didn’t know what we had gotten ourselves into! We started with bare land (quite literally NOTHING on it) and over the past 3 years have grown our acreage, improved our soil and pastures with the livestock, failed and succeeded a lot, and now sell our grass-fed and pasture-raised highland beef direct to consumer. Vote for your favorite sunny! Its almost time to seed our first round of sunflowers! These beauties will be planted every 2-3 weeks until end of July so we have continuous blooms all summer. Currently I have it planned out to plant 3000 sunflowers this year which means 3000 sunflowers blooms just for you! Some sunflowers can bloom as early as 55 days while others take closer to 80 days! It's been a while since I've introduced myself on here! My husband and I bought two acres of land in North Ogden in 2017. It was overgrown with alfalfa and weeds, but after being away for many years, we loved being back in our hometown. As we got settled in, we started growing flowers for our own happiness in 2018, and started selling the flowers to the people of Ogden in 2020. I’ve always admired how other places, like Europe, see having flowers in their home just as important as having fresh fruit and vegetables. Flowers feed our souls and help lighten our lives if we let them. I’m starting to really look for Daily Miracles! I read something just this last week while I was on vacation about daily miracles. It got me thinking and I have decided that every morning I will take a moment to ask for the ability to recognize some of the miracles that happen around me. I’m not talking BIG old ones, although I may see some, but mostly the small ones that sometimes are disguised. I mean, look at these tulips! How in the world do they lay in the ground all through the freezing winter and then just when I need to believe that spring is around the corner they make an appearance. And how beautiful.... Saturday I had two things happen that I view as miracles. They were conversations with people - one I grew up with but haven’t seen in years and the other a complete stranger that I met at a yard sale. One told me about her sister who is a florist and that gave me the chance to go see what magical creations she makes. We connected and started conversations about flowers. (and you all know how I love to talk about flowers) @wishblossomflowers My friend shared a yearly trip she makes with her family to Hamilton Missouri to visit the Missouri Star Quilt Company. I have found another place I want to visit! Our farm camps are designed to immerse children in nature and let them experience where their food comes from; a modern disconnection we want to bring back. We are up against a multi-billion dollar advertising industry working to pack more calories and less nutrition into our nation’s kids just to make a profit. SEEEEDS! Last year we had a problem with weeds, dry soil, and pests. With most of our lot having been grown in a more traditional manner in the past with heavy tilling and empty soil, it’s no wonder these hardy, invasive plants and opportunistic bugs have moved in. In an effort to learn from our first year here, we are going to try to green mulch and meadow a lot of our land. Our goals are to suppress weeds, increase soil quality, and attract more pollinators. The way we plan to do this is through cover crops! We prepared our “cash crop” space in the fall through sheet mulching, but it was impractical to do that to our whole half acre. So instead, we are covering the rest of the plot with barley, clover and some spots of local wildflowers. This is more of a long term strategy to get more organic material into our soil that has good nitrogen fixing and moisture retention. This way, we hope to keep a good crop rotation of our land and manage it more effectively without having to do lots of difficult manual or machine tilling and other work. We had snow today, so we will wait a few more weeks before getting these in the ground. In the meantime, there’s a lot of work to do! Stay tuned to see our progress this year. April Showers bring........... A lot of mud according to Kyle! The mud and standing water all over the place is creating a mess. Don’t get me wrong, we love rain, but we could use some drying out for a few days. We have a couple of “puddles” we could cruise on right now! I know that sunny days are coming, and so much beauty will appear from this water so I am patiently waiting. It’s all just moving slow.... That is weather, not time. Kyle has peas popping in rows! We can see them. We hadn’t even planted them at this time last year. I keep ordering seeds for us to plant. Lots of flowers of course but some this and that too and Kyle keeps shaking his head because I kind of want everything. I have just created tea towels with some of my art printed on them. Do you use tea towels? Would you be interested in seeing them on our site? There are veggies and flowers and bugs involved. Did you know the search for quality chicken is the reason we changed our lives and got into farming? Once we learned the labels we were seeking weren’t what we thought they were (organic, natural, animal welfare, vegetarian fed etc.) we found that pasture raised birds is what we were searching for and because no one in Utah was doing it at the time (there are now only a handful of us), we decided to grow them ourselves. Our chickens do not live in their excrement; they get fresh air, exercise, sunshine, and most important, a few blades of grass and clover each day. Pastured poultry is the gold standard for healthy terrain birds. They’re probably the hardest thing we raise. Because it’s better for their health and ours, we move them, by hand every day to increase the microbial diversity and the available nutrients in the chickens diet. They also naturally fertilize our pastures. Chickens are kind of fragile too, they don’t have a chance against predators. Unpredictable weather patterns cause a great deal of anxiety for us, we worry about our birds. Our altitude also presents unique challenges we have had to work through over the years. Because we choose to raise them on pasture and not the confinements of an industrial chicken house our variables and chances of loss are great. But, we do it because we believe the integrity of the animal matters. How your food is raised MATTERS! You can tell the quality of our chickens just by looking at them (this an actual photo from our farm last year). Remember, it’s ok to ask your farmer questions.
