We found the alms giving in Luang Prabang really moving, beautiful and spiritual. It is a daily Buddhist ritual at dawn, where local monks collect alms, mostly in the form of food, from the community. The almsgiving ceremony is deeply ingrained in Lao culture and is as a symbol of community unity; it reinforces traditional values, respect for elders, and and reverence for the monkhood, which is central to Lao society. It is based on the Buddhist practise of generosity and compassion; the giver gains merit and spiritual growth whilst the monks rely on the food for their basic needs. It is a symbiotic bond. Even though the heavens opened, you could see how enchanting Ninh Binh could be and why it is so steeped in folklore. We first saw the Hang Mua Caves that felt like the Great Wall of China had stretched down to Vietnam. We hear it is normally an incredible viewpoint; whilst our focus was on the slippy steep stairsโฆ Hoa Lu was the capital of Vietnam in the 10th and 11th centuries and the legend goes that the Emperor at that time used to visit the Hang Mua Caves to see dancers. It was ever thus! So that is why Hang Mua translates into dancing cave. We pressed on and took a traditional river trip in Tam Coc, known as the โHalong Bay inland,โ although its name comes from the three caves along the Ngo Dong River which resemble a dragonโs lair. We took a train overnight train from Hanoi to go trekking for 3 days in Sa Pa, North Vietnam. Mike said it felt like sleeping on a bench during an earthquake. He was not wrong. My phone pinged, โwelcome to Chinaโ we were that close to the borderโฆ Sa Pa is known for incredible rice terraces and for the Hmong, Dao (Zhao), and Tay tribes; each with a different culture and dress. Our lovely guide, Shom was Hmong and came dressed for the 15km hike in the most exquisitely embroidered jacket that she had hand dyed and hand stitched herself. The rice terraces are at the greenest in June, but we found them still stunning and home to buffalo. In Vietnam, 60% of people are farmers and they pay buffalo to the wifeโs family for her hand in marriage. The number of buffalo is dependant on a) how tall you are b) how white is her skin, or c) how old you are. Being tall is the most attractive because any children will then be tall and eligible for the army. This is very important for Vietnamese, not because they are communist, but because everything is then free from healthcare to housing for three generations in the family. We spent a stormy day at another iconic Australian location, Bondi Bay with its incredibly beautiful beach and Bondi Icebergs Club, the stunning swimming pool right by the ocean. What a cracking place to spot humpback whales who migrate down this coast between May and November! Byron Bay is also known for its colourful murals as it has a reputation for attracting artists, musicians and having a vibrant and eclectic community. We were lucky enough to see the annual Sculpture by the Sea Exhibition at Bondi; the world's largest free sculpture exhibition with over 100 sculptures shown along 2km of coastal path. Better still, we spent the whole day in her beloved Bondi with the lovely Jane C. Easy to see why she loves it so much. She is also a life saver at the Bondi Surf Bathers' Life Saving Club, founded in 1906, one of the world's oldest surf lifesaving clubs. The Sasak people, the oldest indigenous tribe in Lombok, practice animism (influenced by nature) and communal living; everyone is family, no money swaps hands and everyone is free to eat whatever food anyone has. They donโt even have a word for thank you because why is that needed when you are family? Anyone who earns money pays for others until they earn. A true community where no one goes wanting. I was told, โif we enjoy what we have, we feel rich, if we want something we donโt have, we are poor.โ How true. They are very skilled in weaving and no design is the same as it is done from memory. In Sukarara village we came across the Manggis Songhet Womenโs cooperative and met the lovely Angie and Fitri who showed us around their village. We also learned that the word โgossipโ is the same in both our languages and a universal activity! Sade village, the oldest Sasak village in Lombok, has many traditions; houses are โcleansedโ with sacred cow dung monthly (no it doesnโt smell). After 25 years since our last visit, we expected changeโฆyet what stands is how Indonesiaโs incredible natural beauty is being marred by huge levels of waste thrown everywhere. Each beautiful photo in this post is right next door to dumped waste, although you would not know it at first glanceโฆ. Without a centralised waste collection or treatment system, it is estimated that over 50% of Baliโs waste is mismanaged and Lombok perhaps more. Waste is thrown into illegal dump sites, roadsides and rivers. Once the wet season starts, it gets washed into the sea, making up 90% of the ocean plastic. So a company called Sungei Watch (sungai means โriverโ) cleans rivers in Bali to prevent this happening. They also cleaned 40 tonnes from picturesque Jimbaran Beach washed over from Java, the worldโs most populated island. We finally left adorable Bali by hopping on the ferry to Gili Meno, the middle island of the Gili Islands, opposite crazy, party Gili T with quiet Gili Air behind. It was like stepping back in time; there are no cars on the island only horse and cart and a small community who live in the centre. It takes an hour and a half to walk round the entire island, so nowhere is very far. One of our main activities was snorkelling and although all the coral was dead, I just loved following turtles wherever they wentโฆthe other activity was watching the sun go down as the music cranks up on Gili T opposite. When that music fades away, it is replaced by the dawn prayer cutting through the air at 4.30am. Itโs all go on the Giliโs at night! But look how huge it is and how tiny the people are! The photos really donโt do it justiceโฆ Tukad Cepung Waterfall: this is unusual as the waterfall is hidden in a cave that you have to wade along to see a curtain of water highlighted with sun rays through the cave openingโฆhow magical is that?? Felt like an early George Michael videoโฆ Benang Kelambu Waterfall: its name translates into mosquito net which the number of waterfalls are seen to resemble. Lush jungle and lots of pesky monkeys surrounded us. Another huge waterfall in Lombok this time, so I had to negotiate climbing it with a wet sarong, which means I had more propensity to be swept away I can tell you! So we escaped the madness of the south of Bali and ended up in an oasis on the north coast at Villa Boreh in Sembiran. As it is so close to the end of the season we were paying little more than hostel prices but were the only guests here with 22 staff - just the way Mike likes it! Could not believe our luck!! I knew the sunsets were legendary in Bali, but the sunrises are too - especially here. We also saw the September super moon light up the ocean. The gardens were incredible and everyone was so friendly including the resident hornbill called Bella who was momentarily shy before joining us for breakfast every day. It really felt like the Bali we remembered - such a very special place with special people who invited us to take part in their annual ceremony and wear traditional dress.
