Insects like bees and wasps are often used in jewellery designs, not only because they can be so beautifully detailed but also because of their hidden symbolism. I've combined a mid-century Spanish souvenir earring in the form of a wasp, a pearlised drop repurposed from a vintage clip-back earring, two beads from vintage necklaces and a 22 K gold plated bee charm in these gorgeous earrings. The female wasp takes action to support and defend her nest and symbolises the need for a person to take strong action to achieve their goals. The bee, revered since ancient Egyptian times symbolises good-luck, prosperity and success in life. I grew up in circumstances where money was very tight, and girls were expected to get married young and not carve out careers of their own. I was the first person on either side of my family to attend university, and having that opportunity started me on a great journey through life. A bit of bloody-minded action on my part and a pinch of luck helped!!
