On our first afternoon drive in Kanha National Park, during a recently concluded photo-tour, we were tracking a particular male tiger. While following some Spotted deer alarm calls, we came across this beautiful male Sambar deer guiding a fawn while the female was busy, browsing on the other side of the jeep-track. Till this day, I had never seen a fawn so close to a male stag and how the father was guiding the young one. Global Tiger Day is celebrated every year on July 29th to raise awareness about this magnificent but endangered big cat. It was created in 2010 at the Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit in Russia, when the 13 tiger range countries came together to create Tx2 – a global goal to double the number of wild tigers by the year 2022. But now that the Project Tiger division has been merged with Project Elephant and a new division with the name ‘Project Tiger and Elephant Division’ has been created under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), concerns trigger among the wildlife conservation circles. Senior forest officials and wildlife experts believe Project Tiger was given a quiet burial with the merger and feel it is only a matter of time before Project Tiger will lose its edge in conserving the endangered tigers. Conservationists feel that the Prime Minister of India should immediately intervene and order for withdrawal of the Project Tiger merger order and restore the sanctity of Project Tiger division. Modus operandi of an Epomis beetle larva - The larvae lure their victims, mostly amphibians (in this case, a Cricket Frog - Fejervarya species), by appearing as a helpless prey and then attack the throat of the predator with their curved, hook-like mandibles. They clamp down and begin their feast. While photographing a Narrow-Mouthed Frog (Microhyla Sp.) near Kanha National Park, I suddenly spotted this small Cricket Frog trying to get hold of something from its body and then on observing closely, I realised what was happening. Leopards, one of the world’s most iconic big cats, have lost 75% of their historic range. According to research, leopards, once occupied a vast range of approximately 35 million square kilometres throughout Africa, the Middle East and Asia. However, today they are restricted to approximately 8.5 million square kilometre and are facing a multitude of growing threats in the wild. The leopard is a famously elusive animal, which is likely why it has taken so long to recognise its global decline. Often described as a 'super cat', leopards have adapted to their changing habitats, often living around big cities and towns because of their ability to hunt a wide variety of prey than any other cat species in the world. They are capable of surviving in human-dominated landscapes provided they have sufficient cover, access to preys and tolerance from local people. But this constant habitat loss and decline of their natural preys are often leading to regular conflict with humans. Illegal trade of leopard skins and other body parts are also factors contributing to their decline. Every year, 03rd May is the celebration of International Leopard Day. In an ongoing attempt to increase awareness of the importance of this species, this day celebrates leopards and attempts to increase the global awareness of their status as well as the threats that leopard populations are faced with. Jim Corbett National Park is indeed a spectacle too much for one to see. Happy to guide these lovely guests who wanted to experience Dhikala and asked me if they can really see a tiger in the forest. Saw their first wild tiger for about thirty minutes and ended up with five different tigers during their two nights and three days stay in one of the most beautiful National parks of India.
